Salvation Army or Goodwill?

My daughter and I are doing spring cleaning and have a lot of clothing and other stuff we don't need. Some clothing is brand new with the tags still on them.

Which is the better organization, Salvation Army or Goodwill?

There's some website info that a FB friend posted showing the percentage to charity of various organizations, and the CEO's pay. As I recall Goodwill had one of the lowest percentages of give-back and one of the highest CEO salaries, while The Salvation Army was near opposite. I didn't check if the info was correct.

I can corroborate that. Salvation Army is a true charity. Goodwill is technically is a charity, but not a real good one.

Salvation Army. DOn't know if you have one, but there's a vet place here I always give stuff to. They're good as well.

Goodwill gets you a tax deduction, but as a 'charity' it's not worth much if anything. Salvation Army on the other hand, is exceptional.

From personal experience over many years. The Salvation Army is probably the most reliable. They even show up before, or after the Red Cross does at FIRES, AFTER STORMS, TORNADOS, and even during special events where large numbers of people require assistance.

The Salvation Army (if you recall), only collects funding during Christmas period, with their Red Buckets. They do help a lot of people without asking for anything in return.

We have thrift stores near me that direct the funds to Veterans. If that is something of interest you might look into that.

The only organization I give to that I don't know whether or not it's church related is Wounded Warrior Project. We take care of our own. The others are ALL church related because they actually give instead of take. A Christian trait some of you should bone up on instead of slamming the church. St Jude's, St Paul's .. and there's a collection about once a month for vets. Old clothes. I think I can spare some.

As for charities, are there any local shelters to your town/city? The irony of charities being more wasteful the more successful they are is unavoidable - try local.

That's what I do. Every few years in some spring cleaning, instead of tossing my clothes, I donate what we collect from the family. Also, in various places of our town are collection bins for the same, which are usually identified and belong to much more local places than the national charities.

I honestly don't know where shelters are in my area, but have to say that's not a bad idea.
