That is one monster of a storm. I lived in the mountains of West Virginia
growing up, and 2 feet was not unusual.
On the lighter side, this is a response to an AOL article...kinda funny:
Reuters, Washington D.C.
The White House issued a press release this morning saying that the President was "frustrated and concerned"
that his executive order that the storm disperse without releasing snow in D.C. was being ignored.
In a long-winded and rambling statement, he blamed Republicans for ignoring his order in an attempt to sabotage
Washington for political gain. He also blamed the National Weather Service, Guantanamo Bay, high student debt,
ISIS, George W. Bush, low oil prices, racism, the Eisenhower Interstate System, Gresham's Law, linear algebra,
gun control, clowns not named Barack Obama, the Old River Containment System, osmosis, Joe the Plumber,
people who get into the express line with too many items, the Monroe Doctrine, public libraries, and many species of birds.
"Don't they know who I am?" he said, by this author's count, 17 times.

The problem we had was I could walk to the store but the shelves were empty and the supply trucks couldn't get in. At that point, it had been so long since I'd lived in the snow I forgot how easily it can shut something down. Storms like this hit DC maybe once every two or three decades. No one's prepared. DC doesn't have the equipment to keep the roads clear.

I got two calls from folks who want to go skiing up in the NC High Country. Go ahead, but I'm not travelling until this shit is over. I have a beautiful Jeep GC with 4WD, dial-in "snow mode", brand new all season tires, and decades experience driving in snow. I won't have a problem on the road whatsoever, but the turkeys who aren't prepared and don't know how to drive are likely to turn my route into a slow going nightmare.

We are expecting 18" - 20" and blizzard conditions. I'm just hoping the electricity stays on so Russ can use the snow blower. In case not, I just bought a shovel for me so I can help.
Once again, with high winds and heavy snow expected, I will be kept awake worrying about the giant trees uphill behind us crashing down on the house.

I was just about to post that I'm glad I don't live further south than where I'm at. The snow totals climb quickly going further south. The DC Southern Virginia area is gonna get hammered! Seems to be not coming towards us as badly, but enough to where I'll have to shovel and put my life on the line! :(
WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM SATURDAY TO 1 PM EST SUNDAY... * LOCATIONS... INTERIOR PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY AND THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY.

It's all relevant. Three inches of snow will shut down San Antonio. No one knows how to drive on it, or they think because they have 4WD that it's going to magically make the truck stop spinning on ice.
And I agree totally that ice is WAY worse than snow. The simplicity to driving in one vs the other appears to get over a lot of people's heads.

No doubt. Our roads will be able to be driven on very quickly, just a matter of shoveling yourself out. And yeah, everyone is prepared and don't go nutso at the sight of the first flake. Down by Jeff in Georgia it's like that, a simple 1/4 inch is enough to have roads coming to a stand still.

When I was in Yorktown, one winter we got 23 inches overnight. U.S Rte 17 was at a standstill because there was no way to clear the roads.
I used my friend's pick-up to go up to the 7-11 for him and was amazed at what I saw....too many cars and trucks off the road to
even count or imagine.
NYC a couple of years later..12.3 inches of snow. No removal equipment, and no place to put it even when they
brought in State gear. They had to load it into 25 ton dump trucks and dump it in the East River.
Cape May NJ....22 inches once, and no removal gear down there. A local contractor used his 25 ton garbage
trucks with plows attached to clear the roads. Our base was literally snowed in.

Best ever - the blizzard of 1977. I was only 9 years old. I remember that cars didn't hit the roads really for a few days. Walking down the major roads was like walking down these huge tunnels from the amount of snow that had to be piled on the sides of the roads. Young enough to do nothing but enjoy the days off and all the fun! Must have sucked for everyone else shoveling that year!

I had the fortune of living in Wichita, KS that year. Try living where you can see all the way to Colorado, turn around, and see all the way to Missouri. There was NO escape from that. I went to San Antonio for Christmas that year and it was snowing there too. But I think you're off by a year. I think it was 76. I was back in Miami in 77.

It was '77 alright, one of the most massive ever! NY was the worst hit and little forgotten NJ got hit just as bad. Here's a pic of a car like I was talking about.

The blizzard of 1977 was a deadly blizzard that hit the Western N.Y. state area upstate New York and Southern Ontario from January 28 to February 1, 1977. Daily peak wind gusts ranging from 46 to 69 mph (74 to 111 km/h) were recorded by the National Weather Service Buffalo Office, with snowfall as high as 100 in (254 cm) recorded in areas,[1] and the high winds blew this into drifts of 30 to 40 ft (9 to 12 m).[2]:184 There were 23 total storm-related deaths in western New York, with 5 more in northern New York.

Started here I guess a few hours ago. I woke at 4am and it was snowing, but not a whole lot on the ground. It's coming down fast and hard now and everything is covered. Not as bad as Abbey has to deal with though...
Snow accumulations of "a foot or more" today, and then another 1-3" for tonight. I love watching the snow out the window, and the first few minutes outside, and the first few snowballs I toss at anyone moving near me. But then I realize I'm not 13 anymore and I actually have to work to move this crap, and no one is going to pay me to do it!! That and I have no little bastards walking around the neighborhood who want to make a few bucks by doing it for me. Damn spoiled kids have a pocket full of dough and Iphones and couldn't care less about any money from me. :(

It started here last nite at 10 and only about 4" so far but hard to really tell as it's so windy it's blowing around pretty good. 18 to 24" expected. Roads haven't been touched yet except for deicer sprayed yesterday and not a vehicle has passed my house in the past 4 hr. which I expected but find amusing because driving around yesterday all the gas stations were full with cars waiting their turns at the pumps. Where did these people think they were going? Just laughing at peoples reaction that you need a full tank to stay home.
Walked the 90 yards or so to the creek to fill the bird feeders and put some corn out for the critters. The cat keeps trying to go out but after multiple tries but can't take more that 3 seconds of blowing snow in his face until he turns tail.

Sharon's been entertaining herself by watching the chaos unfold from her hotel room in Raleigh.
There's a very slight "hill" right in front of her window... the drivers cautiously edge up to the bottom, get about 1/3 of the way up and floor it. The car spins out, of course, and then the fun starts. The winner so far was a guy that spun out, so he got out of his car, shut the door, and the car promptly slid back down without him - with him in Hot Pursuit on foot.
She went to the store yesterday to get a couple of things, and the shelves were almost bare with lines of people waiting to check out in overflowing carts... kind of what you'd expect to see with a monster hurricane bearing down on you.
I don't understand why the panic - it's just a snowstorm. And if you can't drive on ice, why the hell are you out on the roads?
It's all relevant. Three inches of snow will shut down San Antonio. No one knows how to drive on it, or they think because they have 4WD that it's going to magically make the truck stop spinning on ice.

I hear this all the time down here in the south, somehow it makes folks feel as though our winters down here are bad.
I agree 100% ice is worse to drive on, but while living in NJ I worked for the DOT, and plowed ( and salted ) a lot of snow. Anything over 2 inches ya normally put the plows on and when you do so you adjust the plow about 3/4 of a inch off the ground ( if ya didn't you would bust the blade at the first manhole ) but while doing this you now leave a 3/4 inch sheet of ice once ya plow the road, the difference is usually ya have a truck behind ya spreading salt that bust that snow/ice pad up. But if you are getting any kind of bad snow ( or the weather is way to cold ) it immediately refreezes and you then have to keep plowing until the snow quits, but make no mistake in a snow storm you are riding on ice as well.
Jim can back this, when we where kids we lived on a road that coming up the hill had a stop sign, right on a small upgrade, and during a decent snow storm we would make a ton of money pushing cars up that little upgrade, cars don't get much traction on ice.

I'd say we now have 6-7 and climbing.
My only complaint is my driveway, otherwise I would just drive out with my truck and ignore the snow. But my driveway is on an incline. I get about 6 feet out of my garage and all the tires spin, 4 wheel or not. Gotta clean the driveway real good and salt before I get to go anywhere.

This is out the front window, you can see the snow height on the ledge next to the driveway. You can also see the driveway incline, which trust me, makes it a nightmare to get in and out of the driveway when it gets icy/snowy.

from Fox: Major snowfall amounts expected from D.C. to southern New England as powerful winter storm slams region, leaving thousands without power. The storm battered the New Jersey coast with strong winds and 15-foot waves, prompting flooding concerns. Watch Fox News and FoxNews.com for complete storm coverage.

I must say, while I miss the 'excitement' of a snowstorm, glad I don't deal with them anymore. Hey a coating of snow paralyzes some here. They drive like crap in those conditions too-actually they drive like crap all the time, just shows more in snow.
Right now it's in the 40's and climbing. Supposed to be 60 something again today. Still have snow on mountains though. ;)
Stay safe everyone and bless those snow removal guys!

I warned the woman, I told her we needed that damn snowblower! Look at this sucker, it warms your hands while you get rid of the snow into the neighbors driveway since you can toss it about 50'.

Blizzard is here for sure. I shoveled a few times earlier, mostly in the back to let the dog out. Now I just did it again and there was easily another 8-10" out there. Now as I sit here looking out the window, it's coming down the hardest yet, can barely see out of my yard.
It was funny when the dog went out prior to shoveling. He stopped short of going out, then walked out and sunk in the snow! Don't forget he's a tiny chihuahua. But he turned around and came right back in. So I have to shovel for His Honor so that he has a nice clean path to do his business.

The ^*#@$% neighborhood plow guy plowed in both cars, for no reason. We live in an extra large cul de sac, and there was nothing but room to put the snow elsewhere. I know he did it on purpose because our cars were in front of our driveway.
And of course, Russ is on call, so yours truly just shoveled out his car and the walkway. I would have used the snow blower, but since I took out a spark plug, it for some reason won't start. :dunno:

Here's the best I can do without getting dressed again and going outside. Woman is in living room so I can't even open the front door. This is out the front window, you can see the snow height on the ledge next to the driveway. You can also see the driveway incline, which trust me, makes it a nightmare to get in and out of the driveway when it gets icy/snowy.

That one is a Honda Rancher, and IMO Honda is the best. Their best model, IMO, is the Foreman.
I'm a bit biased because I grew up on the old Big Red 3-wheeler and that thing was bulletproof.
Polaris and Bombardier (Ski Doo) both make very nice rigs, too.
The most expensive of all the manufacturers is Bombardier, by about $3k. I don't think they're as good as Honda, though, but on a par with Polaris as far as quality.
The one manufacturer to absolutely shun is Arctic Cat... both 4-wheelers and snowmachines. They are miserable machines that break down constantly.

Yeah, the snowplow kit isn't much, but you have to have a winch installed too for lifting and lowering the blade. You could get by with the version that has a big handle to do that manually, but that takes the fun out of it. Winches are a couple hundred bucks.
I had a buddy with a Sears riding mower with the plow. It didn't work very well because it was 2-wheel drive and would just spin - it was still better than shoveling, though! Gotta have the 4x4 and the ability to get some momentum going quickly.

Mine was low water crossings. For some reason, no matter you tell them, there're always knuckleheads that think they because they have a sportscar they can displace rushing water that comes halfway up their doors. I'd just sit on the other side with a wich cable and hook in my hand. You'd think THAT would be their first clue. "Gee, what's that redneck with the big truck doing standing there with a winch cable in his hand?"

It's over.
My driveway at home and my elderly neighbor's were a freaking mess. The 4" of sleet froze to the concrete and every section had to be scraped with a steel shovel. It took me two hours, my wife helped me for 45 minutes, and I had my neighbor's snow thrower.
On Saturday afternoon we left for the mountains and the roads were more-or-less clear until we drove up through Deep Gap. Then it was blowing snow conditions, one lane in each direction. The two hour trip took about 2 and a half.
My buddies came in from Raleigh- they said it was a real mess there.
Here in the mountains we got 13" of light fluffy snow. My daughter had cleared it with my snow thrower.
Great skiing here. Epic. I'm taking Monday off to play more.

Jim, that Ariens machine you are looking is a good best bet, but you may want to consider a smaller one. I have a compact model 24 here in the mountains, 4th season, and it always starts with the first pull (Briggs and Stratton winter motor). It has electric start but I've never used it. Even my daughter, all 110 pounds of her, uses it. Lots of power and the chute has never clogged on me. I bought the compact to save room in my small garage, and it's easy to move around during the summer without starting it up.
After I'm done using it I turn the gas valve off and let it run the carburetor out of gas. I wash the machine at the end of the season, hit the bare metal with WD-40, drain the tank, change the oil, and that's about it for maintenance. I bought a bunch of spare parts to have if something wears out or breaks, stuff like shear pins, belts, a friction wheel. All that stuff is still in a box, unused.
My wealthy neighbor up here bought a huge John Deere snow thrower the season after I bought mine, and it has all the bells and whistles. The thing is a monster and takes up a huge amount of room to store, and unwieldy to maneuver in a typical residential driveway. We average about 40" snow here annually and he went overkill. Mine is just right.

All Jim really needs is this calculator to figure out the tonnage he's shoveled.

Yeah, I talk big, but a compact would be just as fine. I would really only need it for the inclined driveway, but would use it for the front walkway as well. A smaller version of what I posted would be perfect! The biggest complaint I heard about snowblowers over the years is owners complaining that they would get clogged, even the better ones. I'm looking for a powerful one of course, that won't clog, and won't have me pushing it up a hill, self propelled.

That's insane!! No wonder I hate shoveling!!!
You shoveled <output name="feetSnow" id="feetSnow" for="LoD WoD">600</output> cubic feet of snow weighing a total of <output name="weightSnow" id="weightSnow" for="LoD WoD">3744</output> pounds.

Funny you should say that. Sharon and a woman from Maine (also in her class) are enjoying the hell out of watching people trying to drive around on the ice. It's high comedy.

See, you're already rethinking that snowblower that gives you no workout. Next time come to my house for 2262' of driveway for a good workout.

If my driveway were that long, and there were 20" of snow, and the drive is 10 feet wide... Damn!!

Yeah, broke down and got the snowblower at 63 when it started to wear on me.

My Bad. Should have been 2262 sq. ft. which is only 32,000 lbs. When I was your age, I did it barefooted and only had a soup spoon.

My neighbor used to tell me stuff like that, just prior to handing me like 3 quarters for all my hard work!

As I said, mine has never clogged, and we get some wet shit here. Both these Ariens that I run have little plastic shovels clipped to the front made specifically for clearing clogs, so I'm sure folks clog 'em. And both have 6 or so forward speeds and two reverse. Even an Amazon guy like Gunny would bust his ass without self-propelled.
Back when I lived in Syracuse I had a huge Sears thrower, 10hp Tecumseh with track drive. I used that 7 years and had to replace the engine once. The tracks were good for what I had to deal with: wind sheared drifted snow, very dense. A wheeled blower wouldn't cut it.
The only time I clogged a thrower was when the snow was so wet that it acted more like water than snow. You can't pump slush with how these things are designed. So the key to keep from clogging is to clear the snow while it's still cold. Don't wait until the next day when the sun is out melting the top layer.

I'm definitely getting one this summer, for real! I figure the prices will be better if I wait. Plus the places around here are sold out except for the pieces of crap. I honestly don't need anything HUGE if the sucker does a good job, it's only a small home. With that said, I still wouldn't mind a small plow on the front of the truck, back into the garage at night - finish the driveway in seconds in the morning!

With a foot to 18" of snow in Syracuse I would clear my long driveway in about 45 minutes. My neighbor, with a similar driveway and a 4WD Dodge truck with a Fisher plow would take longer. And he beat the hell out of his truck and property, and ended up pushing snow across the street onto the neighbor's. I move my snow exactly where I want it.
I was lucky as hell when the engine blew on my last one, because I had managed to clear enough snow to get my car out of the driveway, it was during a regular weekday, and a local hardware store had a new, identical short block on their shelf. Three hours of wrenching and I was back in business.
I'm never that lucky, and don't want to be stuck in my driveway, so I did a lot of research when I ordered this last one. I insisted on a B&S motor, and Ariens has been around forever. I found replacement parts at dozens of online dealers before I ordered the machine. The crap that they sell at Home Depot are made who-knows-where, and good luck getting parts.

Here is some cool drone footage from 14 miles down river from me. It shows Easton, Pa., Phillipsburg, NJ, and part of Lafayette College. Sorry but I couldn't link just the video.
