I put this lawn in when we bought the place 7 years ago, taking the advice of a landscape architect friend. This is a new neighborhood, so the soil was all compacted construction crap. The grass is a blend of turf type tall fescue. The first 2 summers I spent several hundred bucks on water, a lot less the third year, then stopped watering altogether. Three years ago I sampled the soil and found 2" of rich black topsoil (there was none when I started) and the root zone was 30" deep. Every year it gets greener and greener so I'm sure the roots are down to about 4 feet now. This is a direct southern exposure.
As a comparison my neighbor across the street has an automatic watering system and waters at least every other day.
