"We knew now that yeah baby (http://fightersweep.com/1047/project-weasel-first-sam-kill/#), every time you turn that SAM on your hand may tremble, because there may be a Weasel coming right down your throat.” – USAF Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Allen Lamb"

Screw THAT. Those F-100s were bait for the F-105's to lock onto the SAMS. My Cub Scout Den Mother's hubby was a 100 pilot. The only thing he had an advantage on was maneuverability. That usually means you got a slow plane.

I think I'd rather walk point.

"Yesterday marked forty-nine years to the day since the first success of the Wild Weasel (http://fightersweep.com/92/history-of-the-wild-weasel-part-1/) concept in the skies over North Vietnam. In honor of that accomplishment which established the foundation of the modern SEAD/DEAD (http://fightersweep.com/168/history-of-the-wild-weasel-part-2/) mission, we bring you the story of the very first kill on a surface-to-air missile (SAM) emplacement by two of the very first United States Air Force aviators to earn the Wild Weasel name.
The video (http://fightersweep.com/1047/project-weasel-first-sam-kill/#) picks up with a description of the initial frustrations in Vietnam and loss of aircrew. Stay tuned, as it includes an interview with (at the time) Captain Allen Lamb and Captain Jack Donovan as they describe the first SAM kill."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TBpswks2f8

"Weapons spent and the target destroyed, Lamb led SPRUCE flight back to Korat in a formation resembling a V–for victory. The F-100 led a pair of F-105s on each wing, which was a clear (http://fightersweep.com/1047/project-weasel-first-sam-kill/#)sign to those below that the Weasels had found success. While the celebration was well underway at the O’Club, a cabled message back to Washington (http://fightersweep.com/1047/project-weasel-first-sam-kill/#), D.C. read “Weasel Sighted SAM – Killed Same.”
While the kill was widely celebrated, it was not known who did it or with what, as the Weasel project was still classified at the time. The Weasels paid a high price in Vietnam, as 5 of the 7 F-100s were eventually lost. For what seemed a suicidal mission, Donovan coined the phrase “You Gotta Be Shitting Me” which still serves as an unofficial Weasel motto to this day."

It is still a damn good story.

Old school stuff. Those guys were hard as Hell. I used to laugh when that nimrod Jillian tried the " they didn't fly F-102"s when Bush was supposedly a pilot". I'd like to know what the f- that was I got to sit in the cockpit of in 1968 at NAS Key West or why Den Mommy's hubby was an F-102 pilot. And their is NO mistaking a 102. I just can't figure out how grown men can sit in those tiny little cockpits. Holy crap! I wouldn't even fit in one. I just don't remember how big the men were then since I was a kid so my perception is off.

Like I said, I'd rather walk point. I had enough issues without adding getting my ass shot down from the air to the mix.

My dad was a crew chief on F-100's, F-101's, and F-4's (my fave besides the A-10).

He said the F-102 was the most unstable plane of that era.
That GWB was a pilot in one, says a lot. W volunteered to
go to the F-105, but he was not able to and he got enough
points to resign his commission anyway. He did want to fly
in Nam, not just ANG in the USA.

The F-4 was like having a 68 Olds 88. Gas guzzler from Hell. I loved them. So did the pilots once they fab'd their own machine guns onto them. I think the F8 was the last plane with built in guns for quite a few years.

The 105 was a beast. But you aren't getting front line equipment in the TXANG during a war. His dad was IIRC a Grumman Avenger pilot. Doing suicidal shit must run in the family.

It IS a good story. Don't acr like I'm the first person to go off on his own. Robin Olds was my freakin' hero when I was a kid.

F-105 (Thud) and F-4 (Phantom) were two of the best planes of that era.

F-4 was very fast and highly maneuverable, and could be loaded to
pack a powerful punch as well as a great air-to-air fighter.

F-105...just an awesome machine...not quite up to par with the F-4
in speed and maneuverability, but tough as hell.
