that's Truman with SOS James Byrne's on board the USS Augusta (CA-31) on the trip to Potsdam for the conference with Churchill and Stalin. in the back ground is my dad's cruiser the USS Philadelphia (CL-41) while I knew his ship was an escort this is the first photo i found of it. I think it was Byrne's who convinced Truman to use the bombs on Japan or else face the wrath of the American people in the post war or even face impeachments.

Sitting (from left): Clement Attlee, Harry S. Truman, Joseph Stalin, and behind: Fleet Admiral William Daniel Leahy, Ernest Bevin, James F. Byrnes, and Vyacheslav Molotov.

Why? You put effort into looking up Truman? The guy who took the military out of the hands of the military? Or is there more to the story?

And I apologize, I can hardly read right now until I replace my glasses. Guess you missed THAT post. Been skimming a lot. So your dad was on the USS Philadelphia? Cool.
I just have to wonder what people would do NOW if they had to get on a ship for transportation. They've turned planes into busses with wings. I can see them all hanging over the rails now. :laugh2:

Alert: "Girl" comment ahead...
It's actually cute how he turned his hat sideways for the picture.
Perhaps a foreshadowing of the morons who do that with baseball hats this decade? :laugh2:

the founders never wanted a standing army ANYWAY.
And the military is always suppose to be under civilian control to avoid a police state and military dictatorship in the U.S..
You know this but somehow it seems you don't like it much when the military don't git it's way.

Partially true.
You just do not like military apparently.

I don't like the military wanting to run things their way without over sight from the people and constitution,
anymore than i like the congress, the courts or president doing it.
I don't like the fact that some in the military feel they are a separate class of americans,
loyal to 1st to each other and their commanders and resent "civilian" control.
But gunny said "The guy who took the military out of the hands of the military?"
that just set off too many alarm bells for me to let slide.
I highly respect and am grateful for our military but I agree with the founders, standing armies are dangerous to liberty.
The founders weren't happy with big gov't either. Doesn't mean they "hated gov't". Just big and corrupt gov't.
One of the founders said Gov't is like fire, it's great as long as it's controlled.
Same with the military.

I wish you folks wouldn't take every little criticism they read of a beloved institution or group as an indication off dislike or "HATE". (seems kinda weak and lefty BTW)
Should i assume that when anyone criticizes Blacks or Illegals or any number of groups or people that get verbally PISSED on every day on this board that that means the writers "don't like" or "HATES" them?
Could it be that maybe they dislike or disagree with certain aspects or actions or are looking for improvement?

Overstating the obvious Rev? Can't have your cake and eat it too. The nature of the world and politics dictates a standing army. And the left has done and will do its best to disarm the citizenry. Calling the dictatorship we currently live in by any other name makes it no less a dictatorship. What's the difference between a military dictatorship and Obama's executive orders? WE believe in the US Constitution is the difference.

Why? You've been around long enough to know threads can go anywhere. I already told you where I messed up. These glasses from yesteryear don't work that good. I think it's totally cool. If I had a pic of my dad jumping out of a C-130 it'd be my friggin' avatar. If I had a pic of my grandfather at Operation Overlord it'd DEFINITELY be on here.
Got my respect. I hate destroyers though. They bob around too much. Did you think I was going to be completely nice? :slap:

Find me a thread here that hasn't. They either die quick or end in left field. Speaking of, when I started playing Little League for the NAS Key West Braves, I played left field.
I HATE frigates. I think it's totally cool you got a pic. Most of my ancestors are vets back to Samuel Adams and I have no pics. I'd LOVE to have some Civil War pics from the 17th Alabama. Complete with the Confederate battle standard. That sucker would be up on display in a second.
I might be an ass, but I'm also a vet. I know what it means. I'm glad you found it. Now don't expect me to be nice for rest of ... the damned year.

.. besides, the photos include Churchill. That justifies them, all on its own ...
Speaking of Churchill, a few years back I was watching a program about a famous phographer, who was appointed to photograph Churchill. He waited outside the door in the hall of a building where Churchill was at a meeting during the WWII. He waited patiently, camera on tripod, ready. When the meeting was over, the participants came out of the room, Churchill among them. The photographer called to him and asked him if he would stop for a moment to be photographed. Churchill stood still for a moment looking at the camera. He had a cigar in his mouth. The photographer asked him if he would remove the cigar. Churchill just looked at him and didn't move. Finally the photographer walked up to him and took the cigar out of his mouth and went back to his camera and pushed the plunger. Ergo, the famous photograph of Churchill scowling at the camera. He was rather miffed at the affrontery of the photographer.
