Mine loves getting pet, will even show you as much with the amount of purring he does, and his walking back and forth to your hand to show you exactly where he wants to be pet. Until he has had enough. And then he will let you know that too, and exactly where he wants you to stop!!

It depends on the cat, since some are more domesticated than others, but mine's a feral, in fact I've always had feral cats of some order, so this method has proven to work. You have to understand that they are basically wild animals and have you around for convenience more than anything. Aside from food, shelter, and warmth, they need grooming. Since they are independent, they only want you to groom what they can't adequately groom themselves. Those areas are the neck, most of the face, and especially the ears. I'll grab mine rather forcefully by the face with one hand and inspect the ears with the other.

If you want to get the cat to be mad at you, start petting the areas that he can groom by himself: the feet. Mine will instantly respond with claws out.

You can only move the arms and legs around when they are half asleep!

My molly has a lot of murder buttons. When the ears go back....watch out. She tried attacked my face one night. Good thing there was a pillow close by.

Mine will bite and scratch my arms but never my face. Somehow he knows where the line is on that.

Mine is a feral that I got from a shelter as a six week old kitten.
I have given a lot of blood to him!
He still has a lot of wild in him, but too damn cute to get mad at.
