People should pray for discernment. Personally, I have high sales resistance, and I think a pretty good scam detector.
Sadly all too common.
Investigator James Randi has covered many such cases, and his org seeks to help those who have been financially ruined by the likes of the OP

There didn't seem to be anything paranormal about an investment scam.

Nothing paranormal about the scam that I am aware of, however, I would guess thats it was no accident that they chose church groups to speak/sell to, no doubt god and spirituality were well minced into his toxic schemes.

I'm pretty sure those are two different things as it pertains to Randi.

That guy deserves a special place in a bad place if he led anyone away from God.
