President Obama, in a historic first for the Pentagon, has chosen to nominate Eric Fanning to lead the Army, a move that would make him the first openly gay civilian secretary of one of the military services.

The White House announced Friday afternoon that President Barack Obama intends to nominate Erik F. Fanning as the next secretary of the Army, a move that would make Fanning the first openly gay person to lead the Army if confirmed by the Senate.
Fanning has served as acting under secretary of the Army since June 2015 and previously served as special assistant to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. He has a long record of national security service in the military and Congress which dates back more than two decades. The 47-year-old, however, has no record of military service, but it is not a requirement for the position and many who have held the position have not served.

I don't know if you remember this or not....but I recall quite clearly how, back in the 90s, Bill Clinton got up out of bed every day and appeared to reflect on "how can we fool them (the American public) today?". Well...Obama gets up, no doubt, and reflects on "how can I poke, prod, punish and piss off the Americans today".

Appointing this non-military gay to that position was yet another poke/stick in the symbolic eyes of most Americans. No doubt about it.
