In your opinion, when did the present acrimony between conservatives and liberals begin? As for me, I point to the Robert Bork nomination for the Supreme Court. Bork was a reliable conservative. Instead his seat went to the unreliable Anthony Kennedy.
Perhaps it all worked out in the end, as Bork died in 2012. Obama would have nominated some undesirable candidate.
Bork's nomination seemed to be a low point in politics and it has gotten only worse since then.
