The Dow Jones industrial average closed at session lows, off 531 points and in correction territory for the first time since 2011 (http://www.cnbc.com/2015/08/21/dow-hits-correction-for-first-time-since-2011.html) as all blue chips declined. The last time the index closed more than 500 points lower was on Aug. 10, 2011. In the last five years, the index has only had four instances with closing losses of more than 400 points.
"For investors the momentum and the drive of the market is now lower (than) it used to be because there's no place to hide," said Lance Roberts, general partner at STA Wealth Management. "Every time we hit the major technical points we kept selling."
A traders noted that investors stopped looking at techincals and were plowing through them.
"It's an expiration day and it looks like they're to have for sale on the close maybe as much as a billion dollars," said Art Cashin, director of floor trading for UBS.

From The Associated Press 24 August 2015:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
China's stock market fell Monday by its biggest margin in eight years, defying the government's multibillion-dollar attempt to stop a slide that has wiped out all of the gains of this year's price boom. The decline threatened to weigh anew on global markets after last week's Chinese losses triggered a worldwide selloff.
..."It feels like the end of the world," said Pan Chong... ..."This is definitely the end of a bull market"

I was told that, if you knew what you were doing, there was a lot of money to be had today. Lots of premium stocks lost value due to automatic selloffs and could be had at bargain prices before the companies managed to correct them.
My husband went to work before 6 a.m. today and texted me that he might not be home until late night. If at all.

</cite>TOKYO (Reuters) - Volatile global markets showed signs of a respite from the recent blood-letting on Tuesday, as bargain hunters helped Asian stocks off three-year lows hit on fears that China's economy was risking a hard landing, with Chinese shares losing another 5 percent.
The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan jumped 1.7 percent after an initial dip to three-year lows while Japan's Nikkei (.N225) index also erased most of its early losses after an initial drop of 4.3 percent.
"There appears to be buyback as many markets look oversold after panicky selling in the last few days. Even the shares that had little business ties with China were sold," said Yukino Yamada, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities.
U.S. stock futures (ESc1) also gained 2.0 percent in Asia, paring a part of its 5-percent fall the previous day.
But mainland Chinese shares bucked the trend, with Shanghai Composite Index (.SSEC) falling another five percent even after 15 percent fall in the last three days, including 8.5 percent drop on Monday.
"Global investors are cannibalizing each other. Calling it a market disaster is not an overstatement," said Zhou Lin, an analyst at Huatai Securities.
"The mood of panic is dominating the market ... And I don't see any signs of meaningful government intervention."
Underlining concerns about China, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Tuesday he hoped China would take action to stabilize its economy and that Tokyo had no plan for now to unveil its own new economic stimulus package.
