I'm in heat hell

Anyway, so it's hot in my room. It's on the 2nd floor. I have a bathroom on one side of me, and a 12x12 room (guessing) at the top of the stairs. I face the back of the house. Facing the front of the house is an identical room to mine. So there are 2 long rooms, one bathroom, and one weird square room at the top of the stairs.

My window unit in this fairly small room is 8,000 btu. Running at 60 degrees all day long - and it won't go below 70, and that's when I first wake up. Midday and it's about 76 degrees in this room.

Some background: We have yet to turn on the central air conditioning yet. If we do, it has a leak somewhere, which then runs down and gets the motherboard wet. When you go to turn on the heat in the winter, it won't, as the motherboard is defective. Don't ask, long story, but we didn't get it fixed this year, but added a few window units.

So downstairs right now, in the living room, it's reading 86 degrees. Yikes! And heat rises of course. All of the rooms upstairs are like a billion degrees, 'cept for mine. I'm surrounded and in an oven. Then the stinking roof is right near my head (close enough), and I'm sure that it's a little hot up there.

Any way for me to "keep the heat out". Normally it's nice and cool in my room, but the damn heat surrounding me is kinda putting a damper on things for me. :laugh:

76 isn't hot James, hell I keep my unit set on 74. Go down to the old Man's, hell he keeps his on like 78, and it is cool. All what you get use to, heck you have been freezing for the last 20 years so anything above 65 you are dripping sweat. :laugh:

Well yeah, in comparison to the rest of the house, and the poor bastards without air conditioning, it's not gonna kill me.

Wanna hear something funny? Janeen asked if I would visit for a few days while they hit up Wildwood, watch and feed their animals for them. They have a total of 3 window units for their downstairs home of a 2 family house. And boy will they be working overtime for a few days!! :)

What's your bathroom like?

In very serious situations, like before I had an air conditioner, I would fill the tub with cold water, place a board over the tub and put an rotating fan on it, get a sleeping bag and use that for a mattress with a sheet for a cover.

Of course if you are an average bachelor, you might want to get Mr. Clean happening first

It ain't pretty, but I bought the solar tint crap for the windows that reflects the heat. My Dad bought it from Home Depot as well and swears it's awesome. And if anyone knows about saving money and such, that would be my Dad!

But crap, I wanted the stick on stuff, but they only had that for regular privacy tint. This crap you gotta clean the windows, spray on soapy water, put on tint, cut (if not precut), then spray again on the tint, maneuver it around, get all the bubbles out and all the water...

Yeah, that was easy! LOL

After cutting 4,000 slices, endless bubbles and 43 razor cuts, I'm done. I did 2 panes in the bathroom next to my room, and then the 2 panes in my room. Both look like absolute shit, but ask me if I care? My goal is to reflect the heat, not get a prize for having no bubbles. At least that's what I'm telling myself! LOL Damn, it's ain't easy putting tint up!!

It's definitely late July in North Texas; about 100 degrees for the next week. Only a couple months until that first cold front in October. Fortunately, I'll be traveling up north for a few days.

AAAAHHH Yes! the heat and jungle humidity of summer in the NY metro vicinity. The thrilling feeling of knowing your make up is melting, your hair is dripping sweat, your deodorant failed three subway stops ago and the other occupants of the car apparently never put any on at all. Days where I change my undergarments at least once during the work day to avoid offending the clients we serve yet am repeatedly victimized by an olfactory assault on the level of a nuclear attack on a sewage plant. Days when the idea of cooking anything is an absolute obscenity and eating almost as bad. And yet in some 5-6 months we will be mourning the warmth and cursing the ice and snow.

You can get longer lasting ice by filling up soda bottles with ice, instead of ice cubes.

Blackout curtains on your windows, to block both the heat from coming in, along with insulating the cool air. Set a fan on the floor to blow air straight up. This will help move the air in the room to get the cool air up top. I would definitely get the central air checked out as soon as possible, though.

A hillbilly air conditioner!! I was going to make one when thinking about camping last year. You can also use a large computer fan if you can figure out how to connect it to the cooler, and then get power to it from a vehicle...

Now that I have some tint in the 2 rooms I use most, I'm also going to blacken them next, likely just with towels or paper. I figure the heat is now reflected back out, and any sunlight left can also be blocked.

I live in Florida. The heat index has been running 110 degrees with 75% humidity. Feels like a sauna. We keep our thermostat at 77 degrees. Feels wonderful.

Jim if you walk inside to 77 after being in 110 heck you would probably be cold, :laugh: Like I said Dad keeps his around 78 and his house in Florida is always very comfortable.
