San Diego, CA - Authorities on Wednesday circulated surveillance camera images of a youth sought for beating up a 52-year-old man at a La Mesa transit depot.

The victim had just exited a trolley about 8 p.m. June 13 when the assailant jumped him, punching him until he fell to the ground and then kicking him in the head, according to police.

By the time officers arrived, the attacker had fled, Lt. Angela DeSarro said. Police do not know why the victim was targeted.

The man, whose name was withheld, was taken to Alvarado Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A surveillance camera captured images of the aggressor, described as a black teenager with braided hair, wearing blue jeans, a white sweat shirt, red tennis shoes and a black baseball cap.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Cerasoli told NBC 7 he left the costume store around 7 p.m. and walked toward the trolley station. During his walk, he came across a young couple.


He said the woman made a funny face at him, so he made a funny face back. Apparently, the woman’s male companion did not like this exchange.

Before he could make sense of anything, Cerasoli said the man began pummeling him with his fists.


“I said, ‘Hey, just let it go man. Let it go.’ And he kept coming toward me and I was walking away,” he recalled. “The next thing I know, I was ‘Bam!’ I got slammed at the back of the head and I went face down on the ground.”

Cerasoli is a Navy veteran. When he was younger, he was involved in motorcycle accident that left him with short-term memory loss.


Today, if he wants to remember something, he has to write it down in a book that he keeps.
“If you want to know anything about me, it’s pretty much in there,” he explained.


Given that he was badly hurt in the Trolley station attack, Cerasoli said he wasn’t able to write everything down about the incident before he forgot some of the details, including what the suspect looks like.


However, he said he’ll never forget the attack – and how it made him feel.


“What he did was incorrect,” he said of his attacker. “He needs to learn it within himself.”


Cerasoli is well-known and loved by his community and often performs as “Scooter” the clown for children’s parties. He said nothing brings him more joy than making people happy.


Now, his friends and neighbors are rallying around him, hoping his attacker is found and justice is served.

Here's a similar case that was in fact treated as a hate crime. I couldn't care less about color though. Anyone caught suck punching people like this should get a mandatory 2yr sentence, IMO. And of course increase that dramatically depending upon injuries. And make sure they are sent to areas where other prisoners aren't fond of cowards.

Texan Pleads Guilty To Federal Hate Crime For "Knockout Game" Attack On 81-Year-Old Black Victim

A Texas man today pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime charge stemming from his “knockout game” attack on an elderly African-American victim.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 29, copped to the felony count during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Houston. Barrett, who has been locked up since his December 2013 arrest, faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine in connection with the assault.

The victim, now 81 and only identified as “RC” in court records, was punched in the head by Barrett, who videotaped the assault with his cell phone. The blow left “RC” with two jaw fractures and three less teeth. The man subsequently required surgery for his injuries, according to an affidavit sworn by FBI Agent Alfred Tribble.

Investigators noted that a video found on Barrett’s phone showed him approaching an “elderly African American man” and asking, “How’s it going, man?” Then, “a loud smack is heard, and the victim falls to the ground,” reported Tribble, who added, “Barrett laughs, says 'knockout,' and then flees in his vehicle.”

On another video, Barrett (pictured above) is seen driving around a mall parking lot and saying that he was trying to get up the “courage” to play the “knockout game.” On one clip, Barrett said, “The plan is to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?”

In arguing to keep Barrett imprisoned before trial, federal prosecutors contended that he was a danger to the community and that, “The evidence clearly shows that he hates non-whites.” Agent Tribble’s affidavit noted that, “In other videos, Barrett uses the word ‘nigger’ and states that African Americans ‘haven’t fully experienced the blessings of evolution.’”
