Perhaps letters and petitions do have some effect. Or so my daughter hopes, anyway.
Exxon Mobil said Tuesday it had stopped production at three offshore platforms that shipped oil to an onshore processing plant isolated after a California pipeline ruptured and was shut down. The May 19 breach of Plains All American’s 24-inch oil pipeline spilled up to 101,000 gallons of crude along the California coast and took the Santa Barbara County pipeline out of service. The shutdown closed off an artery connecting Exxon Mobil’s nearby Santa Ynez processing plant to refineries.
The oil initially continued to flow from offshore platforms, building up in storage at the stranded plant.
As the oil storage tanks filled, Exxon Mobil petitioned Santa Barbara County for an emergency permit to transport the oil out by truck. The company estimated it would run out of storage space by early July.
On June 10, the county denied Exxon Mobil’s expedited request, saying the company’s filling storage tanks didn’t constitute an emergency.
