So, my son spilled a large glass of milk on my I7 Toshiba... panicked, wiped up the evidence and then hauled ass to bed. Yeah, it was running.

The next morning I got up and the keyboard didn't work, and neither did the touchpad. Hmmm. I picked it up off the kitchen table and there's a huge puddle of milk under it - the milk ran down through the keyboard, over all the internal circuitry and boards, and out the bottom vents. Somehow the damn thing still works fine, except the keyboard and touchpad. But I can't very well take it out on the road with a USB keyboard and mouse.

So I just picked up this new one... installing everything now and updating it, setting it up properly. It's a beast!

First time I've owned an Asus, anyone else got one? They've got a good rep from what I've heard.

Good luck with it, and keep it out of the kitchen.

Rick, I kinda did with my mom's car, what your son did with the computer. LOL! Not milk, but hit a tree in reverse, going a bit fast I guess. Bent the frame, all 4 doors caved in. My friends and I drove and did what we were doing, climbing out of the windows. At the end of the night I climbed out, closed the garage and went to bed.

Like the puddle of milk, the bumper had bark embedded in it. ;)

They are available in Russia. My grandson loves it. It is still alive in his hands.

This is just an example.
The prices differ from shops to shop. Mind the configuration.

Yep, that looks like the same one. I did the conversion, 104,000 rubles is almost $2,000 dollars.

That's a hell of a lot of money for a laptop!

No, it is not. A laptop is not a piece of bread you are buying every day. Very many can afford themselves top models. Those who can not are sticking to cheaper modifications. As simple as this.

I just remember waking up at around 4:30 am to my dad slamming the back door, "WTF happened to Mom's car?" (I'd never heard him yell or say the F word before!) He thought my brother had had the car. I stayed in bed. I heard my brother, "John drove, Kath had Mom's car!" They both went outside. Came back in, Mom awake now.

I was now listening from around the corner. "It looks like she hit a tree, then went under a truck." Dad cancelled his golf date, I scampered back to my room. Heard his bedroom door slam. He didn't come out til the afternoon. I think he was contemplating killing me. LOL!

I heard my brother say, "Kath says she hates backing up, I think she does it way too fast to get it over with." Sigh, became a long standing joke. ;)

Asus makes good products! What really matters is what's inside though. The I7 processor rocks! I use mainly an I5 and I'm more than happy with it. I also have dual core while you have quad core. I would like that for burning the movies I "borrow" from time to time. :) 8gig of memory, should be more than enough. Same with a terabyte of storage. While I have 4 external drives now for storage, I also have 700gig free of my master 1tb drive. It's a heavy bastard, but I would take that over most laptops without thinking 2x. I'll take the weight and the power over the slimline and waiting all day!!

Yeah, it is heavy... by far the heaviest laptop I've ever had. The guy at Best Buy said it was because it has some monster heat sinks in it for when she's working hard. It's over 8 pounds, lol!

I almost went with a lesser model, but my wife told me I should get the one I really wanted as I was standing there trying to decide. Who am I to argue with the wife?

So far so good, I'm really impressed with the performance so far and it runs circles around "Old Milky".

Yes, Balu. In polite company, people will usually say "the F word" instead of saying fuck.

Funny enough your wife had to drag you to the computer she knew you really wanted. No sense half stepping.

From what I saw from the link, you have a gaming computer there ? Gaming computers have hyped-up specifications, so of course you'd be paying a premium for those. They look perfectly adequate for current gaming expectations, though whether that will still be true a couple of years from now is anyone's guess. In terms of cost, for a gaming machine, the price paid is a reasonable one. Suffice to say, though, that for more 'mundane' usage such as blogging on sites like this one, surfing the Web, etc ... your laptop is way more than qualified for the task.

Me .. at the moment, I'm using an old laptop on its last legs .. in VERY dire need of replacement. I've been planning what I want for quite some time, and I've still yet to actually purchase its replacement, though this should be happening fairly soon. I'm going to try for a custom-built machine following some specs of my own, such as 24GB of RAM, at least an i5 Quad core processor of 3.2 GHz, and a generous hard-drive at least equalling 5 Terabytes (from this Company, it's possible to order a 4 hard-drive machine with a total storage exceeding 24 Terabytes !).

Cost ... in the region of £1,500.00 (something like $2.000 ?).

One thing ... when the laptop was bought, was an offer made of a free upgrade to Windows 10, when it comes out ? The Company I'll be buying from is offering this as standard. I think the release date is around one month from now ?

The site's Website (obviously, they cater for Brits rather than an overseas market) ... you can order pre-made computers, or choose your own specs. At the bottom of the page you get advice on whether all you choose is fully compatible -

Gaming models need processors that work a lot harder. That in turn produces more heat, making for a need to have components installed capable of keeping its temperature within tolerable levels, hence the greater weight .. and cost, for that matter. That's a particular concern with overclocked processors, processors rejigged to work at higher capacities than their manufacturers designed them for (gaming enthusiasts sometimes like to take such risks for the sake of the edge they consider higher processor capacities give them).

Yeah, it's a gaming machine... I got it ostensibly for work, but it'll handle any games I want to play - might as well get one that does it all instead of getting frustrated when it lags out in a game.

That sounds like one awesome machine you're planning having built, please post the link when you have it built so I can check it out. Sounds like a real beast! I can't see needing anywhere close to 24 gigs of RAM, but it would be cool to have just in case! :thumb: I've never filled up a 1 TB hard drive and I like to save a lot of stuff... I think the closest I've ever gotten was about 700 gigs on my old gaming desktop.

Yeah, when they're under load they do produce a lot of heat, for sure. I had my old I7 Toshiba pretty hot a few times in different games where I could feel the heat coming through the keyboard and the fans were on maximum... a couple times I wondered if it was going to shut itself down like they do when overheating, but it never did.

The interesting thing about this one is that it comes from ASUS already equipped with overclocking. The first thing I did was turn the system up to High Performance in the power settings which kicks in the overclocking (or "turbo") system. So far I haven't heard the fans kick in at all. I've got a 3-year cover-to-cover warranty on it, so if it does fail I'm good to go.

Alienware really puts out some sick machines... I've never owned one. Starting at $2749? lol, I'll pass on that one. Way too much money for a laptop! That would be an awesome rig though.
