How many people have you shared a city with?

Was looking through the Russia Thread - started to wonder...

I've been to many large cities - I wondered how many folks I've shared a city with - at the time I was there.

Methodology: Find the estimated population for each city the year I visited. I did not use airport layover cities. I did not add multiple visits, but the highest estimated population during one of the visits. I used the best info I could find via http://population.mongabay.com/ and the closest year data I could find without turning this into a research project. Numbers seem to be for the metropolitan area - not within the city limits proper, best I can tell. May not be accurate, but the inaccuracies should be consistent across the datapoints. I tried to list only places I've visited with about 1+ million folks.

This might interest only me, but I think that's pretty dang cool. By guestimate, that number could double - even not-counting overlaps (if Iived in one of those, say, I wouldn't count it twice) if I listed every city I've travelled to, hung-out-in, and lived-in. I should have asked everyone I passed for $1 US :)

I have also been to cities slightly under one million, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Columbus, Charlotte, Fort Worth, Louisville, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Cleveland, Arlington.

All my cities combined are nothing compared to yours, dmp.

Almost all of the big-BIG cities were from work-related trips. Various military training exercises (Japan, Thailand) and what-not, or because of being stationed in a particular area (Germany, Korea). I made it to Moscow to help my step-mom go through the steps required to move from her home (Izhevsk) to marry my dad. I moved cross-country - so touched a lot of the USA that way. And thanks to the internet met friends in other cities on the list. :)

Izhevsk is a very nice city ( founded in 1760, population - 642,024, the Motherland of famous and known all over the world "Kalashnikov")

Gunny although I haven't lived in all those cities I have been in most states and many of the big cities and have always said the same thing, if you look with open eyes every state has good, some states get a bum wrap, say like NJ, most folks ride up and down the Turnpike and see nothing but factories , refineries and dumps, NJ is a beautiful state in many area's but because of what the closed mind people see they are considered NJ the garbage state.

Best I can figure, they filmed that in Big Bend National Park. The mountains are a dead giveaway. Those mountains are actually on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande and they are in Southwest Texas.

Not from my perspective. I count every time my life was uprooted and I had to move, change schools and meet a bunch of new people. You can't cut out ANY time I was in San Antonio. I only went to 1 school more than once, and it was elementary school. The beginning and end of the 1st grade, beginning of the 4th grade and end of the 5th grade. It was the school around the corner from my grandparent's house. I lived on 2 different bases, and pretty much all over the city.

I lived all over South Miami as well, to include Homestead Air Force Base. When my father would go to DLI in Monterey, we lived on the Presidio when I was 6 and 12. When I was 8 we lived on Fort Ord.

Not going back to the same place and the same people equates to a different place in my book. The only place I ever went back to that was the same was my grandparent's. Even if some of the places were the same, the people never were. I never once as a child ran into someone I knew from a different duty station.

As far as how many people we have touched, any time you interact with others on more than just a superficial level, you touch them somehow, be it good or bad.

I have always tended to try and be pragmatic about almost everything. Of course, with this question about how many people I, or anyone else may have shared a city with?

Look at it this way. I have FLOWN across our country four times. Not certain of the states, or cities I flew over at those times, but realistically. You are 100% correct about the parking lot, like many cities you have to go through during the middle of the night, but also like many deliveries you for one reason or another get stuck in that parking lot.

As for the company I keep, well I delivered in SA on Monday Morning, so yes I arrived Sunday afternoon, and as I stated I parked at the Flying J ( a truck stop ) when you have a 30 foot long truck with a 53' long trailer behind it you kind of have to park in the truck stops, it was right across from another truck stop ( TA if I remember correctly ) the company I keep no, I sat in my truck and watched TV, but I also could look out the window and see the lot lizards coming and going and yes I would even turn the radio on and here what was being sold on the back row. I don't consider me doing my job the company I keep. To make matters worse after I delivered I wound up having to go back to the Flying J and didn't get loaded until the next day, I wound up having to go to Laredo to pick up and that particular day they had made the biggest gun bust to date ( at least it was then ) on the International bridge, they had a truck load of guns that was either coming in or out of the US ( can't remember ) but the check point coming back up where fun to say the least that day. :laugh:
