As if it's f'ing christmas. The day is somber and powerful and should evoke thoughts of appreciation to those who paid the ultimate price.

found this online -

I was an Army brat the first few years of my life. I have vague memories (or memories of memories?) of several Army posts; in Georgia, in Arizona, and another place or two. Then my dad was deployed to some place called Korea sometime in 1950.

Three additional memories are a bit more vivid – the day we were notified he was Missing in Action and, sometime later, that his remains had been recovered, and finally, his funeral. I wasn’t allowed to go – I was deemed too young.

But, I have a Purple Heart.

He is buried in our home town, and there’s a small memorial in the city park there with his name inscribed. I visit both as often as I can. Even though I was only five or six at the time and will be 69 in about a month I still miss him. I have pictures and memories, and…

I have a Purple Heart.

For many others, like myself, Memorial Day has a face.

We’re past the 50 year anniversary of Vietnam and there is a wall FULL of my brothers and sisters who earned a Purple Heart

So please don’t wish me a happy Memorial Day because…

I have a Purple Heart!

There are literally ten's of millions of Americans living today who HAVE NO IDEA what Memorial Day is...other than the day the INDIANAPOLIS 500 is run every year. And, that it's the first holiday of the Summer.

We need to EDUCATE AMERICANS before asking them to not wish us a HAPPY anything. But I agree.
Memorial day should be the day ALL AMERICANS thank GOD for the AMERICANS who made it possible for the UNEDUCATED Americans to even have a holiday based on FREEDOMS earned with BLOOD!

Memorial Day is actually May 30th.

Memorial Day is a combination of VE Day and VJ Day. Someone decided to combine it into one day and claimed it encompassed ALL wars.

Veteran's Day is in honor of victory in WWI.

Summer begins June 21st. The 4th is actually the first holiday of summer. So, thinking the Indy 500 is the first summer holiday is definitely uneducated.

Gunny, where did you find this info? I've always understood that Memorial Day is to honor all who've fallen in service to the country. However I've learned not to just dismiss info you've given.

Veteran's Day is to honor those who have served the country.

So far what I've found from pecking around backs my understanding.

Arlington Cemetery Gravestones Honor America's Fallen Soldiers Of Every (And No) Faith
On Memorial Day we honor the men and women who have died in service for their country. At Arlington National Cemetery, these fallen soldiers lie side by in a remarkable display of religious diversity within the U.S. armed forces.
Baha'is lay beside Jews; Muslims beside Christians; Hindus beside Wiccans. The cemetery offers over 60 religious symbols (http://www.cem.va.gov/hmm/emblems.asp) with which to engrave headstones -- some of which may be familiar and others rarely viewed in public spaces.

Our military, like our people, are of every philosophical and spiritual background. May they all be honored and remembered for the sacrifices they have made. And may their families be comforted knowing their loved ones are respected.

So, you have proven my point. Those Americans who CELEBRATE Memorial day with picnics, fireworks, and drinking are UNEDUCATED. You can declare the 4th of July to be the first...IF YOU LIKE. So try and tell the people who are at the Beach, or at the Memorial Day Sales. Playing with semantics doesn't impress the UNEDUCATED who are out there celebrating, and saying HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY....does it?

Take a look at our IDIOT-IN-CHIEF today...Memorial Day...

Addition to the post of dmp.
It differs from a Victory Day, which in Russia is called "Celebration with tears in the eyes."
