Not trying to out anyone, and not wanting to pique anyone's paranoia, but this thread is for those who want to show off, ask questions or otherwise discuss guns, Second Amendment rights or anything else related to enjoying our right to firearms.

To kick it off, my grandkids, courtesy of my wife not mine biologically, and I have gag photos every year. The photo below is from last year. This year I'm thinking pirate zombies.

Notice the rifles in the pic. What astounded my wife's youngest (not the father) was that I had three rifles with bayonets. http://www.mazeguy.net/military/m1helmet.gif

Obviously everyone has seen my avatar. Yes, that's my Springfield Armory 1911A1 (check the serial number: it's photoshopped! Don't show serial numbers online, please):

In order, from top to bottom, my foremost recommendation for a first line of home defense, a 12 gauge pump. In this case a Mossberg 500.

Second is a great wild hog killer; an SKS with a BSA red dot sight. Third, my favorite personal sidearm, a Browning HiPower 9mm.

I'll take the SKS, the P-35, and the SA 1911A1, thanks.

I think Jeff bought his wife a little pink .38 or maybe it was a .22 - I don't even know what I have, as they belong to my wife. A couple of rifles that are locked up and useless to me. :(

Remington makes fine shotguns Jim.
Lost ALL my guns down a unicorn hole in the severe winter of '51.....

I do not want to put a damper on this thread but guys--its not a wise thing to list or show on the internet any guns you may want to keep -- as that is evidence for confiscation time when it comes around.
Trust me, a day is coming when our guns will be confiscated. They just can not take the chance of leaving the populace armed--not with what they plan on doing to us all.
Remember--Germany confiscated all guns from the civilian population-- preparation is key for patriot and dictator alike... :salute:

Sadly, I now have only a BB-gun... -Tyr

I wanted my wife to use the 12 gauge pump since it is very effective for close in defense, but she was afraid of the kick (even though she hasn't fired it). After trying out several handguns, she settled on a Ruger SR9E 9mm:

http://www.ruger.com/products/9E/images/index.jpg

I drilled her in using it, loading it, locking back the slide, reloading, etc. We've fired it once and will go again when the rains stop since we both want her to be both proficient with it, but also comfortable using it.

I have three 20 round mags in .308 for mine. Mags for it are a bit pricey, as compared to PTR mags which can be had for $3 each, but I like the features of the DPMS Oracle over the PTR 91.

If one desires more juice in a smaller size a G29SF (10 rounds ..standard magazine) would work nicely...I enjoy reloading different calibers...10mm round is a favorite of mine ...also like the G20SF.

The kick is very real to a woman. I bought a 20 gauge pump at the gun store. They required that I shoot it (on their range) with magnums. It bruised my shoulder. We simply don't have the muscle to absorb the blow like men do.

They Required you to shoot it ??? Not sure where you live but that is a great thing to do. One of the shops I buy at has a range next door, pretty much all the guns they sell they also have where you can rent them for a hour at the range and see if you like it, everyone should know what they are buying before they get it.

Proof of this is I bought a Ruger 380 to go to Florida with, some law down that way a few years back said you couldn't be able to trace the gun through a pocket or under a shirt in order for it to be legal to carry, the 380 was small enough for me to throw in my back pocket and you couldn't tell what I had. Well once I got the gun home I always shoot a few rounds in the yard just to get the feel of it, this gun absolutely hurt my hand, the design of it had all the pressure hitting just in the wrong place, I sold that gun as soon as I got back from the trip. I love Ruger, but that gun I wouldn't give ya two cents for.

That's what I told my wife, and she told me that if she allowed me to do so that I would undoubtedly shoot myself in the head while sleeping. I explained to her that guns have safeties, and she just laughed and said "we're talking about YOU". Kinda hard to fight that logic!

I've been hounding for a 9mm for about 10 years or so. NY is a little bit if a different animal (as is the woman). But I might have to do what I have to do, soon enough.

Until then, I have an endless amount of knives at my disposal, and not afraid to use them! LOL That'll be my last words when I get shot!!

And not a word, Marines, as I knew this wasn't the real deal when I bought her:

No problem, I thought someone had gotten smart and decided to teach before selling, that is the problem with most tragedies you hear of, education, people just don't know what a gun can and will do until it is to late.

Problem with the knives are - I'm in NY. Any of my knives, or yours, would likely land me behind bars in this lame state! I can own tons of cool stuff in the knife dept, but don't think of carrying. I'm not sure of various jurisdictions, but according to my cop buddy, don't bother with anything over 4 inches, just ain't worth the trouble, and that's where he said they start fucking with you about it. Well hell, what's left, a damn keychain decoration? If you have a switchblade or gravity knife, you're screwed if you get caught.

I wanted to get that knife I saw in that store by you!! It was your typical folding lock blade, but was about 2 feet long and actually functioned perfectly!! I would love to see the look on faces if you strap that thing on your belt and walk around! LOL

A Cowboys fan? That suggestion is so ludicrous that it borders on insanity. First off, I cut myself last week and Black and Gold blood came out. I have thousands of dollars invested in signed plaques, jerseys, playing cards and endless towels! I can talk for hours and hours and hours about the stars on the team over the years and know everything about them. I have a tad of an obsession with my team. If they lose, I run around the neighborhood and eat all the puppies I can find out of revenge.

And then the Cowboys. Never in a billion years would I root for them. Except maybe if they are playing the Patriots, in Dallas. And even then my hope would be that the hugest jumbotron in the world would fall on both teams on the 50 yard line. I'm cool if it lands on Brady or Belicheck's head first though. :)

Move south Jim. My kids carry knives with a bigger blade than 4 inches.

But in all honesty my SOG I am guessing is right around 4 inches and it does anything and everything I need it to do, great knife that stays sharp as a razor.

G29SF...

Nice sidearm! She shot a few at the range, even borrowed an XDM and Sig to test fire (our ammo) then visited gun stores to allow her to pick up and aim to see how different models fit her hand(s). She has small hands and most double-stack mags were too wide to "fit like a glove". That's why we eventually settled on the Ruger. It fit right, the price was right and it was in a common caliber (9mm).

A friend told me exactly what you said. Even a smaller gun that I am comfortable with is a lot better than a gun I am afraid of (and will miss with because of fear of recoil).

My wife has the same fear. I have a great 12 gauge, a Mossberg 500. Perfect for home defense, but she fears the recoil. She wanted a pistol. I suggested a wheel gun, a S&W 686, since women often prefer revolvers but she really like the idea of a semi-auto so that's what we got. First, it turns out she didn't realize the slide takes strength and the complexities of clearing a jam, but she got the hang of it with practice.

Still, shooting a bad guy in the dark with a 9mm isn't the same as shooting them with a 12 gauge. Although my person home defense/night table gun is my 1911A1, the Mossberg is close at hand. It is my preferred choice. Your 20 gauge should do the job, but like preferring a .45 over a 9mm, the extra punch is always good insurance. Better to have too much than not enough. :)

Perianne

If someone can survive a 20-gauge blast, then I shoot him again. The shotgun is a pump. If he still survives I can use my .357 on him, then my 9mm. And I still have my deceased husband's 12 gauge. By then the intruder would just be ribbons of flesh. If he can get to me after all that, I will kick him in his shredded testes. :)

All good, sweetie, but I guarantee you, in the excitement of the moment, you could fire a cannon from your hip and not feel a thing even though the concussion broke your pelvis.

You're a nurse. You know what adrenaline can do for people. My advice is to use your most powerful weapon first. It is your best chance of ending a fight quickly and in your favor with no harm to yourself.

They are still trying anything they can do, no you don't need a photo ID to vote for the president of the United States but man if ya want a gross of 22 shells you better have it.

Not only is this another far reaching attempt to limit our second amendment rights, if this passed it would drive up the cost of ammo nationwide. New Jersey already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.
But this set of laws would take the cake as some of the most ridiculous.
Legislators want to create a database where they catalog all ammo buyers (http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2015/05/bonnie_watson_coleman_to_inroduce_bill_to_restrict .html).
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12) will introduce a bill in congress Tuesday to place restrictions on the sale of ammunition online.
The bill would require that federally licensed ammunition dealers confirm the identify of their customers by verifying a photo identification and if those customers purchase more than 1,000 rounds within five consecutive days, their identifies would be passed along to the U.S. Attorney General.
“This gives the ability to monitor large ammunition purchases and flag them for law enforcement,” said Watson Coleman, speaking at a press conference at the Serenity Garden at the corner of Prospect Street and Bellevue Avenue in Trenton.

I had a police officer ( in fact if I remember right he was a sheriff ) from SC ( Anderson County ) tell me at the range one day, shoot first at the torso ( waist up to neck ) if he keeps coming a head shot will usually do the trick, but if the guy is so doped up ( and according to this police officer it happens ) that he still is coming hit him in the Hip, no one can continue to to walk once the Hip is broke, he may not be gone but he wont be coming towards you any longer.

Try Illinois. They can't register the guns, so they register the gun owner. You cannot possess firearms or ammo without a Firearms Ownership Identification Card issued by the Illinois State Police.

Too bad the State of Texas doesn't recognized the rules of the Illinois State Police.

Unless you are an extremely good shooter first shots should be at center mass = "center of the chest"--that way even if high or low miss you may still hit vital body parts . I shoot extremely well and would do two center-mass body shots first before attempting a head shot. For the ladies this holds especially true since most are not as experienced in shooting as are the males. This strategy should be applied even if using a shotgun.
I taught this to my daughter and she remembers this as a solid rule for her home protection .
Tis best to have a short barreled shotgun for home use IMHO. I prefer a pump over an automatic.. --Tyr

I am little and am getting old. But I swear, if someone broke in on me and tried to hurt my daughter, I would go ballistic.

Just a short story.... My daughter was seen in a crowd of people which strongly displeased my now-deceased husband. When she came home he screamed at her, standing over her while she was on the couch with tears in her eyes. Her father had never talked so angrily to her before.

I thought he was going to hurt her. My grizzly bear mama mode kicked in. I picked up my .357 revolver and hit him in the head with it. As he grabbed his head and turned around, I kicked him right in his balls. He fell down and I stood there, pointing the gun at him. He dared not move until I let him up.

Nothing was mentioned of the incident for a few days. When his pride had healed a bit, he told me I had had such a look on my face that he he had thought I was going to shoot him.

I felt bad about it. He was not gonna hurt our daughter. He loved her as much as I did. But in the end he got dominated by a 110-pound woman and I know that hurt him.

Maybe I would not be so vicious to protect myself. But there really is a protect-mode we mothers have when it comes to our children. I would give my life to protect my daughter. I am certain all of you feel the same way about yours.

Bottom line: do not break into my house!

Best sights for hog hunting? Range would be 50-100 yards.

I'm looking at a good, but relatively inexpensive (~$200) red dot sight although having 3-4X magnification on a sight would be useful too. Any recommendations?

Max are you sitting in a stand ( sounds like you are ) we run dogs for them, heck most times these hogs are caught a live. Many are in heavy duty pens in someones yard. A friend of mine is a hunting and fishing guide and brings them home and puts them in a pen and uses them for those guaranteed Hog hunts ( people actually pay money for it ) he will take a hog out of the pen and place it in the trailer a day or so before the hunt and don't feed it, he has a fenced in area ( about a acre ) he puts a corn pile 25 yards from the stand, so when he releases the hog on the other side of the fence ( the fence is all hidden pretty well in the brush, the Hog gets to the feed pretty quick and the hunter kills his wild hog  sounds ridicules but people pay big money for this.

As for the red dot scopes, I have one a a rather fun gun to shoot, but it isn't good for putting a shot in a exact spot, it is more for close quarters combat and if the dot is in the mid torso you got him. You throw the gun up and the red DOT shows up very quickly, no real aiming that way, not sure if that is what you are talking about, but I wouldn't use mine for hunting.

Apparently Dentists with too much money and not enough skill to hunt without help.

Texas ranchers are making a mint arranging "hunts" for wealthy hunters to spend a weekend being handed "guided" to shot of a buck, ram or pig.

As for me, I don't pay for it. :D

Truly, you're correct, if you want meat handed to you for money, going down to a good butcher is far easier. Those guys don't even skin their own game. They shoot their wad, pose for pictures then go back to the lodge waiting for the meat to be processed and packaged.

I agree with Max 100% but you would be surprised what people pay for  I believe it was $1400 my buddy would get for a fixed Hog hunt. So yea they where paying that plus then the money to have the head mounted, all so they could hang it in their houses so they could tell their buddies how they where big bad hunters.

There are a lot of deer ranches as well, one in Latta SC where they keep the Deer in stalls ( just like horses ) you go in pay your money ( and it is a bunch, unfortunately I have no idea about how much, not my style of hunting ) but they have all kinds of Deer on the property, the prices go up depending on how exotic they are. One thing I can tell you ( I use to ride by the ranch in the big truck and was able to see through the opening of the stalls on the door ) these Deer where huge, had racks like I have never seen before. Some of these ranches ( not sure if this one did it or not ) you watched a video of the Deer and picked the one you wanted that way, again you payed a butt load of money to hunt in a fenced in area where they just let a Deer loose in for you to shoot, not my style at all, but then again I don't believe in a lot of trash Liberals do.

Yeah.....like women, REAL mean don't "pay for IT". It annoys me greatly seeing folks like that and archer shows where OBVIOUS talent-less hunters kill HUGE bucks. I don't even care for a pro to butcher my game as most in my area have done because when I do it myself, I know it is done RIGHT and the meat is actually mine and is CLEAN. Nothing difficult about doing it yourself and it takes less than three hours if you get on it. I've many times taken a doe with a bow and by lunch, have eaten some of the meat, have the rest "curing up" and ready to freeze and am off to the woods to bag that exceptionally antlered buck who has been looking for his sweetheart all morning. HA!

As for trophy hunting, nothing wrong with it under FAIR CHASE. I always utilize the meat off of any trophy but will kill a coyote or bobcat for the hide (or simply to keep the blame thing from killing my young turkey or deer). Opposed to what some will spout off.....you ain't gotta EAT what you kill. That mindset and comment is usually made out of pure ignorance. Beavers messin' up your lake levee.......KILL EM and sell the blame thing or load them up in a ditch somewhere to bait and hunt the cats or coyotes.

As for hog hunting. We also have doggers who either catch them and raise them or KNIFE them.....no gun needed with a good dog. I prefer to use archer cuz getting that close is taking unnecessary risks. A friend of mine had such a problem with them ruining his corn fields that he lined up hay in a circle, invited a few friends and left corn in the middle (one way in and one way out. One guy sits in the tractor (quietly) and waits for the herd to enter. Once in the "ring of fire" and given the signal, he blocks the exit with the last raised bail of hay and the fun begins. I've never been invited but they told me that they killed so many one time and shot so much that the SKS's literally caught the hay on fire. They don't use red dots but they do you high beam lights. 5 freezers were filled in one night's "shooting". It sure wasn't hunting but the corn fields certainly benefited from it. I don't have problems with hogs on my land cuz I & my neighbor didn't want them and we killed 'em out before they got a good foot-hold on our places. They say you can't do that with hogs but we DID. Would love to bow hunt them year-round but simply don't want them eating the baby quail, turkey and fawns.....much less ruin your plots and muddy up your lake!!! The last one I killed was a 250-300lbs sow. The last two my neighbor killed was a 450lbs boar and 9 lil' ones he hemmed up in his barn. The sorry guys who had been releasing them on our land finally stopped wasting their time so.......no more wild hogs in our area.

Sorry for the lenthy response but it is beginning to be busy season and I only get to post (when I can).

A friend of my dads once traveled to gov. land in Colorado every year and told a guy, who was boasting how good he was, said that he knew of a guy in Mississippi who'd have the numbers down if he lived in Colorado. HA!!! Yeah, my dad (in his prime) was as good as any I know but he could never compete with my stalking and archery skills. My son......I'd put up against anyone (be it gun, rifle, pistol or bow). Gabs a 22 is a great gun, it doesn't have major knock down power but it is used in a lot of hits by the wrong element, so yea it works.

My wife has a 380, a Taurus to be exact, she bought it at a show, it was under $200 and I was completely against it, but when we got home I shot it in my make shift range, and at 15 years hit the mark every shot, It doesn't have much of a kick, but it has never jammed ( no matter the ammo, cheap or good ) it is just a real nice gun, and small enough to throw in a pocketbook easily. In fact it is small enough that when Jim was down I took him to them gun range to shoot, I brought a few guns as did a friend, and Jim can tell you, when I went to put the guns up I panicked, I called my buddy to see if he accidentally put it in one of his bags, and he hadn't , man I was upset, then I reached into my rear pocket and there it was, While loading my guns up I threw it in my back pocket , behind my wallet no less and forgot it was there, yes I panicked but learned now to count everything before leaving the range. But back to your question, it is a great little gun, easy to disassemble for cleaning, very accurate and very reliable, looks goos and is light as can be, I would recommend it to anyone.

That is exactly why I didn't want the wife to buy it, but honestly it has been a great gun. I understand now that another company has bought Taurus out, I bought there light weight 45 ( it was half the cost of the others ) and it shoots great, hasn't jammed once, whether cheap or good ammo and whether it is slow shooting or emptying a mag. I like you always believed they where a cheap gun, but I can honestly say I have been nothing but happy with the ones I own, and I am a Glock man with Ruger running a close 2nd so for me to speak highly of a Taurus well that s saying something.

Since this is an actual constructive gun thread, I would like recommendations for a hand gun that a smaller woman can use for self defense. My cousin has never wanted to own a gun before, but escalating violence in her neighborhood is beginning to make her nervous. And she has two young children.

There are many handguns for women, regardless of size. Most of the problem is knowledge. She should have some training and practice with her weapon of choice to become proficient in it's operation, handling and accuracy. Obviously price comes into play because some guns and their accessories (lights and lasers) can add up real quick. Additionally, with children, there is a concern for safety and that's where a gun storage/safe comes into play:

http://www.gunsandammo.com/ga-lists/best-bedside-gun-safes-every-price-point/

http://www.gunsandammo.com/gear-accessories/gun-safes-at-every-price/

http://gunsafereviewsguy.com/buyers-guide/best-small-gun-safe/

Another alternative to those mentioned above is standard fire safe for documents (which every person should have) but includes a good combination lock like this one at Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/SentrySafe-1-2-cu-ft-Steel-Fire-Resistant-and-Waterproof-Safe-with-Combination-Dial-Lock-in-Black-SFW123DTB/202988374

Unless she's carrying it, every day the gun can be locked up (unloaded) and every night she can bring it out and keep it near her for protection. A nice dog, even a lap dog, is a good mobile alarm system.

Most women prefer revolvers, but they are slower to load. A nice .380 or pocket 9mm can be kept unloaded and then loaded quickly should the need arise. This is another safety feature for having youngins' around: gun in nightstand, magazine kept separately.

Several models of "single-stack" 9mm semi-autos which a good for concealed-carry and home-defense:
http://www.gunsandammo.com/handguns/compacts/single-stack-9mm-shootout/

Researching each can provide more information. For example, I liked the Taurus model due to price, but read another article that it doesn't like cheap ammo. Even though one should use high quality ammo for self-defense, that can become expensive when maintaining proficiency. Shooting a couple boxes of cheap ammo then one magazine (5-10 shots) of more expensive ammunition is much cheaper than shooting all high-priced quality ammo.

I also have been looking to buy a small gun for concealed-like purposes. I read the reviews on guns lately and it seems the manufacturers have all let down their guards and are producing poor-quality handguns nowadays. Even S&W.

Maybe for the WalMart crowd...

From WDIV Detroit 10 August 2015:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Police say the older boy took a handgun from a closet at his father's home last week and tossed it from a window into the yard. Police say he retrieved the gun and fired it, striking 3-year-old Elijah Walker in the face.

After the shooting, the 11-yr old boy was scolded, saying to him that he was warned about going into that room and getting the gun, "and now look at the mess you are in".

S&W has always made junk, but they make good guns to, they try to reach every pocketbook I guess you could say. Years ago when I bought my first gun ( a Ruger GP-100 ) I looked at a S&W for around the same price range and the gun shop owner ( a friend ) told me that the sights blew off that gun after every so many rounds, said if I wanted a S&W go for the higher priced one.

Ruger makes a good gun but I wouldn't recommended their 380 to my worst enemy, I bought one to carry to Florida ( where at least at that time they couldn't be traceable, and I didn't have my leather vest with the gun pocket yet (got to love that thing I can put any gun I want in there and you can't tell it's there) anyway I bought the 380 shot it a couple of times and thought it was uncomfortable as hell, almost made my hand sore from shooting, it was a nice looking gun , came with a laser sight and all ( and it was a Ruger so it had to be good ) well I carried it to Florida but when I got back I went shooting and my God that gun just wasn't fun to shoot at all, it hurt like hell, I let my buddy try it and his response was " throw it away, Ruger dropped the ball on that one " well needless to say it was sold that day

Then the whole deal with the Taurus ( which like you I felt was junk ) but the wife is hard headed, so she bought it, and like I said it is reliable as hell and very accurate at short range ( any more than 15 20 yards you ought not be shooting in my eyes anyway, for self defense purposes that is ) and then when I decided I wanted the 45 I researched the guns and the light weight Taurus was ranked right up there with the others, but the price tag was a lot less, I have shot 100's of rounds out of both guns and haven't had either jam not once. ( I have a large hill in my yard so I use that for my range, unless I am shooting something shall we say, on a larger scale )

Now if you want a 9 which isn't bad at all to shoot Ruger makes a great one, I had the Glock but if you read the reviews from when the Ruger 9 (SR9 I believe ) came out it was ranked way up there, in my opinion ( depending on what you are looking for the weapon for, self defense or target shooting ) I would go with a 9, they don't kick bad and if it isn't that comfortable in your hand you can always buy a new Grip, and they are light weight, depending on the gun you decide on of course. But honestly I would tell you to check out the Tauras 380, or another good one the wife had was a hammer less ( the hammer could get caught pulling it out of a pocket or pocket book ) 38, it was a S&W and that also was a great gun, and yes that is the one Jim talks about that had the pink pistol grip on it  Think about that, you go to jail and have to tell everyone you got there cause you are a thief ( whatever ) and you were shot with a pink gun, man he is going to be a very popular guy.
