Yet another possibility I guess, but I also guess when you are going double the speed limit in a area than is safely posted then anything that might shift the weight off of you is a good thing. The article says a second train reported being hit by a rock or a shot, why is this just coming out now ? Could it be people are starting to realize just how much the accident is going to cost them, or did this so called shot really happen, it will be interesting to see the outcome.
PHILADELPHIA — The Amtrak (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/amtrak/index.html?inline=nyt-org) train that derailed Tuesday (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/us/amtrak-train-derails-in-philadelphia-injuring-more-than-50.html), killing eight people and injuring more than 200, may have been struck by an object before it careened off the tracks, an assistant conductor on the train told investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (http://www.ntsb.gov/Pages/default.aspx).
At a news conference on Friday, Robert L. Sumwalt, the safety board official who is leading the investigation, said an assistant conductor had reported that she believed she heard a radio transmission in which an engineer on a regional line said his train had been struck by a projectile and the engineer on the Amtrak train replied that his had been struck, too.
