`However, legalizing marijuana hasn’t been all giggles and snacks. Colorado is being forced to face some unique issues, from how to regulate driving under the influence (http://dailysignal.com/2014/08/08/traffic-fatalities-marijuana-positive-drivers-rise-colorado/) to just how to classify dispensaries, from a legal standpoint.
To that end, the state legislature finds itself at a crossroads this week. The state GOP is pushing forward a bill to ban those who receive EBT assistance from accessing their funds via ATM machines found at dispensaries. This, they say, would put them in line (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/feb/8/colorado-gop-tries-ban-welfare-weed-against-democr/?page=2) with liquor stores and casinos.
“What we’re doing is more or less codifying that rule in statute,” said Republican state Rep. Dan Nordberg, sponsor of the House bill.
The bill, which would also ban the access of EBT funds at strip clubs, seeks to curb so-called ‘welfare weed’ at the source (http://www.koaa.com/story/28006418/state-legislators-could-ban-ebt-cards-at-pot-dispensaries).
“This is not about punishing people in a situation where they’re having to use public benefits.” says Representative Tim Dore, of State House District 64. “This is about potentially punishing people who decide it’s OK to abuse taxpayer money.”
The bill has, unsurprisingly, broken along party lines. It easily passed the state Senate, where Republicans have a clear majority. However, it has since stalled at the Democrat-leaning House.`
`What are the Democrats’ concerns here? It all boils down to whether or not EBT fraud at marijuana dispensaries is a problem in the first place, with many state Democrats deciding (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/feb/8/colorado-gop-tries-ban-welfare-weed-against-democr/?page=1) that it is not.`
