`The cast of 1984's "Red Dawn" in a publicity photo. Note that mix of high school garb and the weapons they later use.`

`This years marks the 30th Anniversary of the Cold War classic “Red Dawn.” The story of a group of high school students fighting a guerilla war against Communist troops first invaded theaters on August 10, 1984.

The movie was co-written and directed by John Milius, a Hollywood veteran known for bringing his love of firearms to his work. Before “Red Dawn” Milius created a pop-culture icon when he armed Clint Eastwood with a Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum in first Dirty Harry movie. In fact, Milius asked for, and received, a high end shotgun as payment for co-writing the first script.

For “Red Dawn” Milius made sure the weaponry appeared as realistic as possible. Stembridge Gun Rentals, “Hollywood’s armory” since the 1920’s, provided around 10,000 firearms for the production. These included both standard and fully automatic firearms."

It stars Hemsworth - the one who played Thor. He does great as Jed. The little brother, Matt - played by a kid who...uh...is awful. After about 2/3rds of the movie you can notice the money gave out and the plot tanks and things just sorta end stupidly.

Another thing I didn't like - the enemy actors spoke chinese; but were dubbed-over as Korean so their mouths don't match. Also - the enemy vehicles were Chinese and 'photoshopped' in post-production to look North Korean.

Filmed in/around Clinton Township, Michigan though.

`Never had a chance to see the remake....but wanted to for the heck of it...It was okay, but can't beat the original. It didn't help that they wimped out to the Chinese and made the bad guys North Koreans instead.

"It's 11:59 on Radio Free America; this is Uncle Sam, with music, and the truth until dawn. Right now I've got a few words for some of our brothers and sisters in the occupied zone: "the chair is against the wall, the chair is against the wall", "john has a long mustache, john has a long mustache". It's twelve o'clock, American, another day closer to victory. And for all of you out there, on, or behind the line, this is your song."

My SKS is shown below. I was considering buying an AK-47, but have now decided to look at a PTR-91 A3S instead for a longer range rifle since the SKS is a solid hog hunter.

Thanks guys. While I remain optimistic that our nation is robust enough to survive most anything, even a Civil War which killed 2% of the population, I also believe in the maxim "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst".

A thousand rounds each of 7.62X39 and .45 plus nearly as much of 9mm, .223 and 7.62X51 (not to mention a couple of spam cans of 7.62x54R and 8mm Mauser) is more about saving money than stocking up for the day the SHTF. OTOH, if the S does HTF, I'll have a nice selection of ammo to work to consider without having to run down to the local Walmart or gun store.
