View Full Version : By the way, EZ-Pass drivers: Big Brother is watching you

You folks in states that have EZ-Pass on their toll roads: Did you think it was merely a convenience that they so generously made available to you?
They're clocking your speed from toll gate to toll gate. And keeping the records for future use.
Pass two toll gates 10 miles apart in only 8 minutes, and they'll send you a Nastygram. Do it again, and they'll remember the first time, and revoke your EZ-Pass.
Do you think it will be much longer before they start forwarding your information to the cops?
And you thought EZ-Pass was just there to collect tolls?
Sucker.
Aren't you glad you voted for big government?

Not just tolls: E-Z Pass keeping an eye on speeders
Larry Copeland, USA TODAY 1:04 a.m. EST December 20, 2014
Warning to motorists: Don't speed in the toll lanes. E-Z Pass is watching.
Several states, including New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania, say they monitor speeds through the fast pass toll lanes and will suspend your E-Z Pass for multiple speeding violations.
In all, five of the 15 E-Z Pass states have some kind of rules on the books for breaking the speed limit in the convenience lanes.
"You can lose your E-Z Pass privileges if you speed through E-Z Pass lanes," says Dan Weiller, director of communications for the New York State Thruway Authority. "You get a couple of warnings. We don't have the power to give a ticket, but we do have to power to revoke your E-Z Pass, which we will."
He and tolling officials in several other states say the issue is the safety of human toll collectors. "At most toll barriers, we have a mix of E-Z Pass lanes and standard toll lanes," Weiller says.
On Maryland toll roads, drivers' speed is monitored in the free-flowing toll lanes, which have a 30 mph speed limit, says Becky Freeberger, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Transportation Authority. "If we clock you at 12 mph more than that, we will send you a warning, saying slow down," she says. "It's not a ticket." If a driver gets a second such notice within six months, their E-Z Pass account can be suspended for up to 60 days.

And just wait for the time when your wife or girlfriend calls you at work, you don't answer the phone, she calls around and other workers say they haven't seen you all day, and she calls the police to file a Missing Persons report. They subpoena the EZ-Pass records and find that his EZ-Pass was clocked through four consecutive stations, all the way to the exit where his buxom blonde secretary lives. You know, the one who called in sick that morning.
They do the same thing with commercial vehicles, most times when you cross the scale ( if ya don't have EZ pass ) they write your ICC # down, if ya have EZ pass it just documents what time you came through and they can get you for a boat load of tickets with the EZ pass, They know exactly where you should be at a certain time as you cross them so if you had a accident 75 miles into the state and the scale was at the state line and the speed limit was 60 and you where a hour into the state they got ya, and God forbid there is a fatality , you will serve time sure enough.
Then every trucking company that has that EZ pass also has a rating, and if your rating is low do to drivers being stupid you could count on at most scales you would get pulled in and a thorough inspection was done on you and the truck, but when you had a good rating then it was great, they would normally let ya just slide by.

I read this yesterday. And just earlier I was on I-95 in the New Rochelle area and then came up on the toll, and I think I was doing about 22mph when I went through. It felt like a crawl to me, but the signs says 5mph. Yikes!

All I can say is, y'all who live in these states are suckers. Those toll roads in New York State were sold to the public as a 30 year project, and after that they'd be turned over to the public with up-to-date bridges and fresh pavement.
In year 29 the state legislature decided that the golden goose would live on, screw the promises made a generation earlier.
A year later I left that state for good.

Glock at least here in GA about once a year ya hear about them putting tolls on certain roads, so far they haven't found out a way to do so legally but then doing things legal doesn't seem to bother the Government anyway.

a point or level beyond which something does not or may not extend or pass.
So if you are following the rule of law and do NOT exceed the limit, how does this become an issue?

Defacto limits are often different than posted. Traffic dictates. So does positioning - if i take the inside lane for every curve i'd cover the distance faster at the same speed.
Speed laws are about one thing; well - two: taxation and control - nothing else. We let our government ruin our lives; our freedom because the voting majority IS too stupid to care.

Um...
About I-85 Express LanesThe I-85 Express Lanes are High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes open for use by Peach Pass account holders in single- and double-occupant vehicles for a fee, and transit, three- or more person carpools, motorcycles, emergency vehicles, and Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) with the proper AFV license plate (does not include hybrid vehicles) toll-free.

On a related note they took out the toll booth on GA 400 awhile back.

Dang I forgot about that toll, what a mess that was, as for peach pass yes we are paying to use certain lanes but when I was still on thye road the trucker newspapers use to every couple years talk about charging the entire length of 85 ( yes someones pipe dream I am sure ) but when and if the states can figure things out they will do it, more money for them to line their pockets with.

L-A, you said this:
They're clocking your speed from toll gate to toll gate. And keeping the records for future use. I did not see in the article where they are tracking speed between tolls. It appears to be only about speeding in the actual toll lane. Did I miss it?
And, happily for me:
Delaware. "We don't monitor speeds with the E-Z Pass system," says Mike Williams, chief of communications with the state Division of Motor Vehicles. "Speeding is a law enforcement issue in Delaware".
Though we use it much more on out-of-State trips.
