According to Leftie thinking, adversaries shouldn't be treated as such (.. even though those same adversaries wouldn't hesitate to think of YOU that way !). This 'Let's empathise with them' crap saps the determination to win out against opposition, weakens resolve to fight your corner.

I don't think she's taken leave of her senses.

What she has done is to follow fairly typical Leftie thinking. Water down any sense of opposition BEING opposition. That saps the resolve to fight that opposition. I see it as a form of betrayal of the best interests of your country, and an indicator of a desire to ACTUALLY betray those interests.
