Weirdly enough, I was contacted about an ad opportunity. You'll see it running right now at the top of the board, just above the donate button. The only reason I agreed to this was for the proceeds to go to Gaffer. This is a one month run for $50, all of which will go to our little fund drive.

I only use adblock plus now, depending. I'm far from against ad blockers and have told member after member here at this very site to put that on there to get rid of my ads. I don't think anyone should see any ad they don't want to.
But this thread is in reference to a friend with cancer. The ads were only accepted so that the money could be donated to him in our fund drive. One of the reasons the advertiser went with my price was based on our discussion of that fund drive. And then I still have no issue with someone using an adblocker to block out any ad, and this ad specifically. But coming to the thread to announce it seems in bad taste to me.

Added it to my adblock filter.
Why? And why was it so important to let us know?
Certainly doing such is far worse than just a matter of poor taste as it represents no class and a vindictive nature IMHO.
What do you want to be when you grow up??

It was merely a new advert element the EasyListUSA filter I use with adblockPlus didn't have, and I was shocked it didn't. Only happens about once every two years - they keep that sucker updated very well.
My apologies for apparent tastelessness.

^^^ Sure thing , we can see how this ever so complicated comment added by Jim was so confusing to you..
Perhaps Jim can write it in crayon next time....
And still you fail to get that it went far past mere tastelessness.

Some people just don't see the entertainment value of the ads. I like to think about which DP member resembles which ad. For example, I bet Abou Time looks like the photo next to "They Pray You Don't See This Video".

That particular one shows up about 30% of the time. However, they are not as funny as seeing ads for Muslim dating sites when someone goes on an anti-Muslim rant. I was referring to Abou Time's photo as the middle one below. Gnostic is likely the guy that claims to have made $25M working from his (parent's) basement.

Like you said, all is cool. I'll be the first one to join in some tech talk, and don't want to see many ads more than the next guy. And I truly couldn't care less if people see or click on any of the ads on this site. The majority of any type of income comes from guests. I believe people that see them every day sorta become blind to them after awhile. I just didn't think this was the place to point out we were ignoring something.
If there is ever a time to be annoyed by ads, or to put up with them, or help sponsors, or really have anything to do with ads - this is the time. I'd have the site completely littered with ads forever if I thought it could help out Gaffer somehow. But in this case, these ads are not intrusive, and it's only for 30 days.

I wonder if this is all conditioning. I had a high school teacher than described commercials as a good thing. He used to say they have a financial incentive to be entertaining. Furthermore, he didn't want to buy a set of tires today if he saw a commercial for the same store offering a sale later in the week. Commercials entertain and inform. Of course the inform part means a place to begin research, not to take the ad at face value.

I think different but similar. For example, commercials, I can sit there during an NFL game and not remember a single commercial. I kind of tune them out, ignore them, in one ear and out the other. I think it's a lifetime of conditioning as you say. If someone isn't interested in advertising, they will find a way to tune them out or ignore them.
While I still think it was in bad taste to make an announcement of sorts in this thread - perhaps he "conditioned" as well - and just saw ADS and ADVERTISER in this thread, along with ads that beat his filter - and filtered them and announced it. Anton's not the type to trample on what we are doing here. Bad taste doesn't always mean bad person. I think he realized it wasn't received well and apologized - good enough in my book.

If Jim intentionally places ads anywhere on this forum. Why should anyone be upset?
After all. This forum, unlike others. Has no requirements for members to pay for any of the great FREE services.
It would be different IF...we, as members had a say in what we find here.
So, there is another option. If you dislike ANYTHING about this forum.
NOBODY is breaking your arm to come here and COMPLAIN.

Nobody was complaining, nobody was upset and like is illustrated I do not complain about adverts, I just block them.
Main reason isn't that I don't support a site or recognize it's being paid for by someone (I have four of my own) but the real deal is most all adverts you see come from 3rd parties the site owner here can't control, and 90% at least, of all adware, spyware, and other bad actors get into your registry via the 3rd party adverts.
There's no rule, law or even a etiquette that says I have to let 3rd party sites use my computer's resources to deliver adverts to me and download potentially harmful malware, no matter if the site I am on is free or not. They do NOT have the right to use MY resources to do bad things to me even if it's just mere annoyance.
I haven't seen any message boards that require paid membership, at least since the early 2000s. Those still exist? They were quite few and far between, even back then.
Everyone recognizes the forum board owner pays the bills for the site. I have done it myself for pert near 18 years, but never had one advert run on one of my sites, ever. And never will.
It's a choice or preference by the Jim's of the world I respect, but not so much I'll trust my registry to 3rd party advertisers.

The ads I normally run is from adsense. And although they'll use tracking cookies like every other ad on the internet, there is nothing malicious/spyware coming from them. All ads need to be pre-approved before running with them and then hitting this site. If the rarity does happen and something ever got through, their account would be banned rather quickly. In all my years of running it not a single person has ever reported getting spyware from this site. And if anyone runs even half a decent spyware/virus program, they would get notified while on this site if such an ad became intrusive to their machine. And then on top of that, everything on my site is scanned and I would also receive alerts that way. There will be and never was anything ever coming from here that could put bad things into anyone's registry.
Most malware/spyware comes from malicious code in shit websites, porn sites, P2P sharing and programs loaded with software to further advance their spyware. My software has alerted me hundreds of times in the past about shit trying to be put on my machine. Never once has that happened here.
Sorry if I sound defensive, but I am. These are very blanketed statements that isn't nearly true, and makes it sound as if third party ads on my site are somehow putting members at risk. This is 100% false. Sure, go ahead and block any ads you don't like, and I'll even help with directions and links to the best software. But on the heels of this discussion stemming from the ads on this very site - I prefer you post specifics of actual spyware or malware being inserted into your computer, or just state that you want to remove the ads like the rest of us - because they can be annoying.

Again, from where this stems from - etiquette would dictate that you don't talk about potentially getting malware without something to back it up with.
Like I said, go ahead and block them. I highly doubt members coming here to discuss politics will be checking them out or clicking on them. Ads on most websites like this are much better geared towards guests. Niche websites that people come to organically is a bit different. Blocking them doesn't bother me, nor will it affect anything about the ads anyway. But bragging about blocking them in a thread about someone with cancer, not cool. Then implying that malware can come from this site, also not cool. IF I found a direct advertiser that had done so, they would be gone. If through adsense, they could get banned from their accounts. If I saw a hint of it anywhere, it wouldn't be on this site - period.

But it is just a fact that most of the badware that gets into computers, comes from 3rd party adverts not the sites visited themselves. I wasn't at all thinking, implying or saying the ones you use are some of those baddies. IF something did happen like that, it would not be coming from your domain at all. It would be coming from the 3rd party.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
My main point was, there's nothing that says we have to allow 3rd party advertisers to use our resources, just because the site we are visiting is free.

I agree 100%. And again, don't even mind if folks block what I have up there now, before, or next week. And I don't mind what is normally an image/text, but I started having issues with some sites running tons of flash based ads, and that's what affected my browsing and finally pushed me to us some blockers. Adsense and some flash based things seem to be fine, but the annoying video ads, they were literally causing me to have to reboot my browser every other damn page. So again, I have ZERO issue with anyone blocking ads on this site.
IMO, I don't think ANY website owner should have a problem with others using something to block ads. I go to some sites and messages block me - because I am blocking them!! Tells me I can't view the site until I disable the adblocker. WTF? Un-bookmarked!!
And while I don't care if people block, I'm still confident that what I put forth is not intrusive, not to ones machine and not to ones privacy. Just safe advertising to make a few bucks towards fees. Safe on the load, safe to view & also safe to block! :)

Public service: Adsense gets hacked and often does send badware. Google up "adsense malware" and you'll see it's not that safe of a provider. Particularly, look at this incident analysis which happened recently:
https://samsclass.info/126/proj/revmagdalen.htm
Just hoping you understand, I trust YOU 100 percent and never would try to make it seem you were doing anything malicious. I know you would never do that. And I really regret it if I made it sound that way.
