This week saw the release of David Ayer’s 'Fury,' a World War II-set drama in which Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, and Shia LaBeouf play part of a tank crew battling to survive in the dying days of the conflict. As with many war movies, the stars spent time before filming in a boot camp (http://www.gq.com/entertainment/celebrities/201411/logan-lerman-fury) to prep to play military figures. But for previous generations of stars, war wasn’t just something they were trying to recreate onscreen. When World War II broke out, many present or future stars, crew members, and even filmmakers enlisted and did their duty, whether by helping to make propaganda films, entertaining troops, or serving on the front lines.
