`Cuba is apparently not a very big fan of mosques…`

`According to a study (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Cuba) by Pew Research Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pew_Research_Center), there were only 9,000 Muslims in Cuba, and the country’s Muslim population has been fairly stagnate.
Now, we may know why Islam has grown very little in the Caribbean country.
Cuba currently has zeromosques. Muslims are forced to meet and pray in the privacy of their own homes, reports the World Bulletin (http://www.worldbulletin.net/headlines/145533/cuba-rejects-plans-for-first-mosque).
Pedro Lazo Torres, the leader of Havana’s Muslim community, decided to take action, joining forces with Turkey’s Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV).
In April, TDV assistant manager Mustafa Tutkun requested permission to begin construction on a large mosque, which was to be designed after the famous Ortakoy mosque in Istanbul.
The TDV has planned for a much broader project of building mosques all over the Caribbean. A similar project will be completed in Haiti by the end of 2014.
Torres proposed that the country’s first mosque be built, citing the capital of Havana as the ideal location for the expansion and welcoming of Cuba’s Muslim citizens.`

"Cuba immediately rejected the proposal."

``I admire them for discouraging the growth of the muslim population. That is protecting the rights of their people, not to be separated from their heads.``

It's better than being locked in a cage and slowly starved to death. I've been to Cuba; it's a miserable place.

I'm a Southern Baptist. WHy the Hell would I care about a mosque? Except I think one of the found principles in the Constitution of the United States is freedom of worship, right? And you want to deny people that right.

But I'd bet you get your little tail in a crack over the Second Amendment, don't you? And wonder why anyone would deny YOU your Constitutional Rights?

Goes both ways.

I think my tail is wherever I say it's going to be.

You tell me wht I'm taking personal? That we afford criminals and terrorists Constitutional rights, and use gunboat diplomacy all over the world to try and enforce our beliefs on different cultures. But this is different because they're a culture you don't like and a religion you vilify?

There's nothing personal about this. Just obvious.

Gunny. The Castro brothers DO NOT follow any of our Constitutional amendments, or rights. Nobody in Cuba has been denied something they don't have.

I don't believe Cuba has churches of any kind. Of course, no one is going to mention that.

Ready, fire, aim!

This week, the two of us — Reverend Joel Ortega Dopico, a Presbyterian minister and elected president of the Cuban Council of Churches, and Reverend John L. McCullough, a United Methodist minister and President of Church World Service — are meeting in Washington to talk about our work together.
It may surprise many people to know that there is a Cuban Council of Churches, and that there is a thriving, growing faith community in Cuba. While many outside Cuba imagine that religious life has been stifled, there are in fact a wide range of churches active in the country, and religious membership and participation has been growing for twenty years. The Cuban Council of Churches has 54 member organizations. Church World Service and many of its 37 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican member communions work closely with churches in Cuba and with the ecumenical Cuban Council of Churches.

Christian churches in Cuba are primarily underground, same way as Muslim mosques are.

As someone who has perhaps the best knowledge of Cuba on this forum, I can tell you that the Castro brothers welcome "churches" that teach liberation theology. Ones that don't are the ones that have to go underground.
