Funny that his anchor is still out!
I took these pictures last year as we were coming back into Valdez in a helicopter.. the boat didn't look right so I asked the pilot to zoom a little closer :

And in this next picture, you can see the campfire the crew started on the beach as they waited for High Tide to come back in :

I'm not a boat guy, although I like to fish of course. But don't boats nowadays have some sort of gear that can tell them what's beneath them and the depth and such? I know they can find fish that way, but can't seem to locate a massive effing rock right beneath them?

What happens is there's huge boulders that are right below the surface at High Tide and you can't see them, so the boats ground themselves on them and get stuck... and naturally the tide soon ebbs, and now that boat is several feet out of the water. Look in my first picture and you'll see another huge boulder just barely peeking out of the water between the helicopter and the fishing boat.
The dangerous part is that it can topple off the rock, or even break the vessel in half - boats are not designed to support the full weight of themselves on a small area in the middle, especially if they're heavily loaded.
Usually boats have charts with all the hazards like this clearly marked, and electronic gear (like GPS) that shows and alerts you the dangers in the area... but people don't always pay attention. The results can be spectacular! With my pictures, high tide came back in a few hours later and the boat floated off no worse for the wear... the skipper was lucky.

The "sonar" units (or fish finders) can help, but as with all things excrement occurs. :wink2:
