You can have someone living on one block, making $50k per year and barely scraping by in a resnt subsidized apartment - then go like a block away and have people in a tall, doorman/protected building, with condos going for like $10-20 million apiece and filled with executives, celebrities and other rich bastards. There is a LOT of money in NYC, and a LOT of poor areas.
