Navy veteran loses his nose waiting for treatment

Phoenix (CNN) -- Edward Laird is one of the faces behind the VA scandal -- a face he says is disfigured because he had to wait so long for treatment.

The 76-year-old Navy veteran waited two and a half years to get a biopsy for a spot on his nose. And when the VA finally carried out the procedure that his doctor had ordered, the cancer had spread and most of his nose had to be removed.
Laird sought treatment at the Phoenix VA hospital, the facility at the heart of a scandal uncovered by CNN of secret waiting lists and altered records (http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/05/politics/va-scandal-fear-secret/index.html) that left veterans untreated, even as some died.

Our Vets ought to be this Countries # 1 concern, these folks went to fight for our freedom and when returning should be taken care of like the hero's they are, I have 2 young boys that ask about the Marines all the time, my advice to them is forget it, go to college , get a education and move on. I also have 2 older boys that use to ask and I use to tell them I thought the service was a great thing, makes men ought of boys, man have times changed.

The VA is a bureaucracy within the bureaucracy, and always has been. I've heard horror stories about it since I was a kid. It's been under-funded and understaffed as far back as I can remember. And quality? What quality do you expect when the doctors and nurses you hire are NOT the ones out there competing in the market and making millions? "Competent" and "cream of the crop" does NOT come to mind.

This is one you can't blame on BO. This is part of the bureaucracy that is our government. The government gives us just enough medical care while we are active to keep us as integral parts of the machine. What happens when a part in the machine breaks down? You discard it and get a new part. Once you are not an integral part of the machine, you are a liability. And they don't even think twice about going after retiree benefits.

People get on me for not going to the VA, but really, why do I want to sit around all day waiting to be seen for 5 minutes by some goof who is automatically going to deny me? Then you appeal and years later your appeal is upheld and you get something. THAT is EXACTLY how that game goes. It's a game and always has been.

And I'm lucky. If I need medical treatment, as a retiree, I can go out to base for free. Most vets don't have that "luxury".

Off duty, he listens to loud punk and metal music. He once disciplined a group of malcontents by locking them in a room and forcing them to listen to the band Sevendust on full blast. I was impressed.

Marine Corps Drill Instructor is as much acting s anything else. My experience was the ones that actually lived that persona on AND off duty usually cracked, either at work or home. They'd most often either hit or abuse a recruit, or hit someone at home. You can't keep that intensity up 24-7. You'd go insane.

The majority of us played the role, then took off our covers and went home. I had two little girls at the time. And THEY didn't care if I was a drill instructor.:laugh:

I don't think I've ever seen Gabby blame Obama directly for anything, it's always Bush. And when something doesn't get done, it's never his fault, always the republican congress. It's all very weird. What I learned in IL is, as a retiree with Tricare Prime, because there was no base around they farm you out to the nearest doctor on their list who will accept tricare. And if you don't agree to waive the "within 30 minutes driving distance" rule, they'll drop your from prime and you get a MUCH larger deductible. So you see the general practitioner quack in a podunk farming town who has no knowledge of dealing with military people.

A lot of the issue there is a LOT of physicians won't accept tricare. One reason is, they submit a bill to tricare, and tricare pays them what they think they're worth, not what the bill says. So you get second-rate medical care.

Same with the VA, as I pointed out previously. The "cream of the crop" isn't working the VA hospitals.
