Transgender, transvestites... Who else will be knocking on the door next? Not surprisingly, this comes out of San Fran.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) — An independent commission led by a former U.S. surgeon general has concluded there “is no compelling medical reason” for the U.S. armed forces to prohibit transgender Americans from serving and that President Barack Obama could lift the decades-old ban without approval from Congress, according to a report being released Thursday.

The report said Department of Defense regulations designed to keep transgender people from joining or remaining in the military on the grounds of psychological and physical unfitness are based on outdated beliefs that require thousands of current service members either to leave the service or to forego the medical procedures and other changes that could align their bodies and gender identities.

“We determined not only that there is no compelling medical reason for the ban, but also that the ban itself is an expensive, damaging and unfair barrier to health care access for the approximately 15,450 transgender personnel who serve currently in the active, Guard and reserve components,” said the commission led by Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who served as surgeon general during Bill Clinton’s first term as president, and Rear Adm. Alan Steinman, a former chief health and safety director for the Coast Guard.

The panel, convened by a think tank at San Francisco State University, said the ban has existed for several decades and apparently was derived in part from the psychiatric establishment’s consensus, since revised, that gender identity issues amounted to a mental disorder.

The ban also appears based on the assumption that providing hormone treatment and sex reassignment surgeries would be too difficult, disruptive and expensive. But the commission rejected those notions as inconsistent with modern medical practice and the scope of health care services routinely provided to non-transgender military personnel.

“I hope their takeaway will be we should evaluate every one of our people on the basis of their ability and what they can do, and if they have a condition we can treat we would treat it like we would treat anyone else,” Elders said in an interview with The Associated Press, which was provided along with the report ahead of official release.

So, I am speculating that very soon the US military will be expected to provide free sex change surgery to military personnel and their dependents. Also, which uniform does a transvestite wear? I am guessing that the tranny can wear which ever uniform they like on any given day.

Girls uniform one day and a mans the next. Then lawsuits to allow the "man" into a woman's bathroom, and then the next day it will be in the mens room. Odd world.

If they have gone through with the surgery, and can function normally as their new, chosen gender, I don't really see a problem with it. It's the transvestites and part-way there people that concern me for the reasons Jim mentioned above, among others.

Will we someday have to provide special base housing for the guy with 8 wives? How about the woman who marries her dog?

I laugh at these folks too, but that aside - the enemy SHOULD be heading to their bunkers! Even with the distraction of some fruit loops and confused folks running around, I'm betting our military pretty much still kicks ass! I just hope it stops where it's at now. I've learned to accept that homosexuality isn't going anywhere and it's been shown that the units can be just as effective with gay folks in the military. But I'm not buying the transgendered crap. Kinda like Abbey said - if you're NOT confused, and you identify as male/female - then finish the job, make a choice, then we'll talk. But no cross dressing and weird shit. Hell, nevermind, I changed my mind back. If you're willing to have your wiener lopped off to identify as a woman - you ARE fucked in the head and probably shouldn't be in the military carrying a rifle.

So you believe our enemies will DIE Laughing?

Whoever ends up wearing an American Uniform, at any time, at any place....despite how they feel...always has the FULL SUPPORT of the American people.

Unlike our Liberal Politicians who prefer to HIDE with you.

You have a point, Jafar. We are weakening our military from within, via things like women in combat, spending cuts, and the awful kowtowing to political correctness. Should we get to the day when strong and brave young people decide the military is no longer an honorable place to be, we are in trouble.

Or how about two separate housing for the bisexual male soldier that has a female wife and a male husband!?? Remember when we were ridiculed for posing the question about people marrying their dog?? All this is to eventually be allowed in order to further weaken our military. Dem/libs hate our military and want to destroy it by any means possible.-Tyr

Abbey. I agree, and fear our military is, and has been weakened so much in the last five years. The Honor of wearing a uniform, and being patriotic....has been declared UN-AMERICAN by the Socialists running our government.

We no longer have a LEADER, but a DESTROYER of everything we all once called AMERICA.

Jim, what makes you different from a transgender male? If you stood next to one on the street, you probably wouldn't even realize the difference. Same with a homosexual male. They don't all dress in stereotypical manner.

A male - dressed as a female - pretty much still looks like a male. Sorry if you can't see them, but it's ABUNDANTLY clear to me. Go to Google and do a search, look through articles on even news sites you like, go through Google images and such. I'd say 9 out of 10, if not more, look like the sex they were born as and dress like the person they want to be.

Oh, and as to what makes me different? I'm not fucked in the head to the point I'm so confused that I want to be another sex, have a sex change or feel like I am already another sex.

gabby. DIFFERENT? You ask? Jim's not the phony, pretending to be something he's not because he has a mental problem that makes transgender phonies...demand recognition for their phoniness.
