In my never ending quest to minimize reoccurring expenses, I've got my sights on getting rid of my $60/ month Dish bill.

I've found that watching shows over the internet, like Amazon Prime, to be much more entertaining because there are no ads.

So how's the easiest way to do this with my existing high def TV? Roku? Some Microsoft product?

The other thing is that when my Dad is here he likes to watch sports. I never watch sports so I don't know how to access that programming without Dish.

Roku works for us for streaming though there are plenty of other options. Sports are the toughest thing to replace IMO especially bowl games as ESPN has snapped up the rights to most of those but you may be able to stream certain events. Someone told me that they found that they were able to stream the Rose Bowl somehow.

MLB has a $130 portable app that I can buy or my dad, and that would satisfy his baseball addiction. Maybe there's another for football. Assuming it's the same price that would be $260/ year v. $708/ year I'm paying Dish. That saves me $37/ month.

I couldn't live without TV or internet. And I have to pay more, as now I'm addicted to the NFL Sunday Ticket which gets me every single game. Gotta have Directv and pay more though just for their service, then a couple more bills for the ticket!

The Olympics has started, my wife's favorite thing to watch. The only way to get it is to watch the delay on NBC, or to watch it on the internet on NBC. To do either requires subscription to a cable or satellite provide that has an agreement with NBC. So it looks like I'm attempting the impossible.

There's no NBC affiliate in NC?

Or here, without subscription!

You get a stinking 5 minutes for free, but you can sign in from your provider if you have an account and stream it directly from their site.

Awesome site for when in a pinch. It's mostly knuckleheads with video cards who are just streaming their own signals. You'll deal with a few popups to get started, and an occasional one throughout, but it beats no video. I've watched many, many NFL games there.

Damn, NBC's coverage on their website sucks. You do need a login from whomever your TV provider is in order to login (but not on other link I provided). I decided to try out there site as I figured the quality would be better. But damn, seems like a stinking ad pops up like every 2 minutes.

Mine worked fine all weekend. No ads. Saturday night we watched about 90 minutes of Luge competition. It was awesome because most of it had no announcer, so you could hear the sled on the ice- just like being there. On Sunday we watched 2 hours of downhill.

Oddly, we could not fast forward or stop the feed.

It is a Catch 22 though, because I had to use my Dish login to access the full capabilities of the NBC site.

The wife tried this and said she couldn't get it to work. I wasn't around to help figure it out. The NBC site worked very well for us.

I didn't try it for the olympics. I would still bookmark it as I know it's been reliable for me in the past for most sports.
