By JOHN HEILPRIN Associated Press Extremist Islamic groups in Syria are committing a "soaring" number of executions in the country's north that could amount to war crimes, the U.N. human rights office said Thursday.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says that over the past two weeks her office has received reports of "a succession of mass executions of civilians and fighters who were no longer participating in hostilities in Aleppo, Idlib and Raqqa by hardline armed opposition groups in Syria, in particular by the" al-Qaida linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

She warned that such executions violate international humanitarian law, and the numbers of such violations are thought to be alarmingly high.

"While exact numbers are difficult to verify, reliable eyewitness testimony that we have gathered suggests that many civilians and fighters in the custody of extremist armed opposition groups have been executed since the beginning of this year," Pillay said in a statement.

Fighting between the al-Qaida-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and other Islamic groups in northern and eastern Syria has killed hundreds of people over the past two weeks. The infighting is the most serious among opponents of President Bashar Assad since the Syrian conflict began in March 2011.

Pilay's office reported that in the first week of January a number of people were executed in Idlib by armed opposition groups. It said that on Jan. 6 in Aleppo three people reportedly held by the al-Qaida linked group at its base in Makhfar al-Saleheen were found dead, handcuffed, with bullet wounds in their heads.

Two days later, also in Aleppo, "numerous bodies, again mostly handcuffed and blindfolded, were found in a Children's Hospital" once used as a base by the group, the U.N. office said, and that at least four local media activists were among the dead, as well as captured fighters from armed opposition groups.

Pillay says there also are "deeply disturbing reports emerging of mass executions" by the al-Qaida linked group, both when it withdrew from Raqqa and after it regained control earlier this week.

"These reports are particularly alarming, given the large numbers of people, including civilians, that armed opposition groups in Syria are believed to be holding in custody," Pillay said. "The taking of hostages is prohibited under international humanitarian law and may also constitute a war crime."

This is why the FSA needed support in the beginning. Stopping AQ from getting involved would have saved a lot of bother.

One good thing to come out of this surely could be getting word out that AQ and related groups are not to be trusted even if at first they seem friendly and want to help?

IMO the globalist are just using the Islamist (and fear of Islamist) as a tool for the breakdown of the what's left of constitutional rule and the middle class. I think Obama is more a globalist than an Islamist. He's probably drone struck more Islamist at this point than Bush has.
The Islamist (and the fear of them) is wedge in U.S. law. Plus an excuse for aggresive foreign intervention, and useful foot soldiers to be played on either side where the globalist want movement.

Syria's not playing ball so Alqdea can be funded to attack the "horrible" Assad regime.
Kadafi wasn't playing ball so the Alqeda and former Iraqi insurgents could be funded and backed by NATO to topple him. In Pakistan the gov't is playing all sides against the middle and is letting Obama drone the crap out of the remnants of Alqeda there (not to mention some of their own people). Islamist ChenChens terrorist are getting support and from our good friends the Sauds to cause trouble for the Russians. And the U.S. gov't has paid, supported and covered for Terrorist in Iran to try to .. well you wouldn't believe me probably... because most people think "the military only fights for to protect American people, not the globalist plutocrats economic position."

Sure many foot soldier Islamist want to fight to build the Khalif or whatever but they are just pawns.
Sadly not better off than our poor military guys thinking they dying in Afghanistan fighting for "our freedom" or a free Afghanistan. Some in the brotherhood leader ship are probably true believers but i suspect they are are more dirty power hungry crooks with a veil of Islam to keep the power and roll over their enemies. No more looking for Mohamed's return than Jim Jones was looking for Jesus's.

You had better express mail that information to Obama then. He just loves to trust this nation's enemies! When are you going to admit that Obama is at the very least a Muslim sympathizer and piss poor excuse for a man?
