FBI Can Remotely Operate Laptop Cameras Secretly (http://reason.com/24-7/2013/12/07/fbi-can-remotely-operate-laptop-cameras)

December 7, 2013
-Scary. Insane. Ridiculous. Invasive. Wrong.--

The Washington Post reports that the FBI has had the ability to secretly activate a computer's camera "without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording" for years now. What in the hell is going on? What kind of world do we live in?
Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of the FBI's Operational Technology Division, told the Post that that sort of creepy spy laptop recording is "mainly" used in terrorism cases or the "most serious" of criminal investigations. That doesn't really make it less crazy (or any better) since the very idea of the FBI being able to watch you through your computer is absolutely disturbing.

It is only that to the extent that we often see (in life) people complainging about something that under certain circumstances they are ok with. I don't think that is the case for everyone here, but perhaps some.

Nope, but there is a distinction between the NSA and the FBI. The FBI works within the confines of the law and must prove their case and legitimize their evidence which I can only assume would be admissible with a proper warrant. I could be wrong but the article didn't say. The NSA??? Who knows what the ...heck... their doing.

I think your right that in the warrant arena the NSA is worse than the FBI but they are not to be trusted either.
BUT they do often try to get warrants BUt in some cases the the rubber stamp FISA court will give them what they want every time. so it' may not be technically warrantless but practically so.

a few examples of no warrant FBI

But FJ, are we at the point in history where we should be giving the federal agencies the benefit of the doubt on these issues?

I didn't say I trusted them just asking the question. I'd rather have the FBI having to go through processes than the NSA's blank check. You have to have some trust in he system while being ever vigilant.

Easy remedy for this problem. Actually, a very realistic, pragmatic remedy.

If you have a Laptop, or PC equipped with a camera. DISABLE IT when you are not using it.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

And the main reason the manufacturers of PC's, and LAPTOPS place

5799 ON/OFF switches on their machines.

:slap: No, I'm saying that... yes I guess I am saying that the FBI is more transparent than the NSA. :bedbug:
