What Really Makes a President Great?

by Burt on February 1, 2012

Big, glitzy federal programs. At least, that seems to be the formula according to President Obama, who said as much in a recent CBS interview with Steve Kroft on 60 Minutes Overtime. Two of our colleagues at Hillsdale College, Ellen Donohoe and Denise Willard, sent us part of this fascinating interview. President Obama, when asked about his presidency, said, “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president–with the possible exceptions of Johnson, FDR, and Lincoln–just in terms of what we’ve gotten done in modern history.”

But the president’s two largest programs–his stimulus package and Obamacare–are both under an avalanche of criticism. The stimulus package led to a rise, not a fall, in unemployment and its pork-barrel provisions are exposed almost daily. Obamacare scores low in the polls; it is heavily challenged in the courts; and all Republicans voted against it and most ran elections against it very successfully in 2010.

Presidents Johnson and FDR have similar baggage. In Johnson’s first two years, Vietnam became intractable; and his increases in the payments of Aid to Families with Dependent Children gave single mothers incentives to take the cash from the government and not get married. FDR’s major programs of his first two years, the AAA and the NRA, were both struck down by the Supreme Court. And FDR ended up with more than 19% unemployment in 1938 when the countries of Europe, according to a League of Nations survey, had only 11%. Is that the kind of success a president should emulate?

Our Founders did not think so. President George Washington began his presidency with about $74 million in debt. Six presidents later, Andrew Jackson retired the last of that debt. The U.S. removed its debt, the nation began running surpluses, and our freedom and our fiscal integrity became a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. Those are the kind of accomplishments that make presidents great. ^^^^^ Shooting a few holes in the myth of FDR's greatness. Most of which came from the great success and feats of victory brought about by other people during WW2!! As I've presented in the past FDR JOINED WITH STALIN AGAINST CHURCHILL AND THERBY CAUSED THE ENSLAVEMENTAND DEATHS OF TENS OF MILLIONS IN SOVIET BLOC NATIONS FOR DECADES!! They do not teach that truth in history books but its easily verified by doing a simple Google search. Consider this and the fact that Obama hero worships FDR and Stalin!! --Tyr

Sadly for American History. President's only have the possibility of being labeled, or described as GREAT....AFTER they pass away.

Just look at the President's who are still living. And then. Be Honest. Which? If any, can honestly be called GREAT?

Do not include the present occupant of the W/H because pretenders never win anything.

The great ones encouraged their fellow Americans to do their best.
