View Full Version : TIS THE SEASON: How to Deep Fry a Turkey
It's that time of the year again !! So far I only have to make 2 but I thought I would post this after seeing that 4300 homes burned down a year from people not being careful, I have had many close calls :laugh: but thank God I never got burnt or burnt anything up. The only thing I would add to this video is I usually cook a small bird ( 12 to 14 lbs is what my Pot holds) so when cooking a smaller turkey I will always cook it a little under the 3 1/2 mins a pound, I will keep it a little closer to 3 mins a pound, it seems to work out pretty good, so if the bird is say 10 lbs instead of cooking it 35 mins I will take it out around 32 mins ( I can't stand a dry turkey)

We've fried them in the past, yummy
This year though, we are doing a ham. I like the leftovers, and ham doesn't dry out like turkey after only a day or two

Will do. We had been going this route with some fairly decent success:
Procedure (http://www.wnd.com/2006/11/38959/)
Dry your thawed turkey, inside and out. Use a paper towel, not a hair dryer (Thanksgiving 2003). Preheat oven to 475F. Mix the vegetable oil, salt and pepper together and then brush on or rub the oil and seasonings mix on the turkey – inside and out. Put the 1/2 lemon, 3 cloves of garlic, and the 3 sprigs of fresh thyme inside the cavity. Fold neck skin under body and tie drumsticks together with kitchen string. Pour the broth in the roasting pan and then place the seasoned turkey in the pan. Cover, do not wrap, the turkey with aluminum foil. Put the pan on a rack in the 475F oven and cook for two hours.
Cook the stuffing in a pan, not the bird.
While the turkey is cooking, fight the urge to baste it. To take your mind off this unnecessary and harmful practice, read the Declaration of Independence. It will demoralize any liberals you might have mistakenly invited over. Then, read the Constitution. Read aloud Article II. That is the part that sets out the powers of the Executive Branch, i.e, the president. Take this opportunity to remind your guests the president is the commander-in-chief, not the now Democrat-controlled Congress. That will really tick them off and you will forget about the basting no-no!
After two hours, open the over for the first time and don’t baste anything! Just take out the aluminum foil and cook at 425F for 20 minutes to brown the skin. Thigh meat should register 170F at this time. Let stand 20 minutes before carving/bragging. Cut the string, thank me and tell all your friends to listen to The Rusty Humphries Show.

Had it once at Jeff's place in Georgia and LOVED it!! Woman won't let me make it here as she says I'm too irresponsible and am liable to burn the house down. I told her I would do it outside of course, and still a firm no.

Hey man are you going on that run Thursday? It is suppose to start in Gwinett and travel on up to the Mountains, We also have a run going on up this way , a toy run this Saturday ( if you are interested let me know) And of course the club is getting there Polar Bear run set up ( it leaves out early on Jan 1 and runs through the Mountains )

I have plenty of gear but man I hate to ride when it is too cold and anything under 60 is to cold :laugh: ( dang getting old is fun ) :freezing:
I get a couple different news letters with all the runs going on in the S.E. every week, Its pretty cool one comes about Tuesday each week and the other usually comes on Thursday so if I feel like riding I can always find out what is happening for that week , if ya want I will send you the sites so you can sign up.

I appreciate that but it would mostly be depressing because I would see all the rides I can't go on. :(

Well then we will be doing it together :laugh: But it is still a good thing because if I find one run out of my E mail then I have gotten something good instead of all the Bad news I get from different sites.

OK, I kind of went with a little of this and a little of that. Did this but only salted it Tuesday night while defrosting and wrapped it in an oven bag until Thursday morning:

And then put it in the oven following this:

Taking the foil off when the internal temp hit 150 and letting it go at 425 for another 20 minutes until ~165. Only a 10 pound turkey so adjust accordingly.
It seemed to work but hard to tell from a year ago. So I can only say that it didn't NOT work, :laugh: but I'd probably brine it Sunday night next time.
