NYPD to iPhone owners: Hurry up and download iOS 7

Police in New York hand out fliers explaining to Apple faithful that iOS 7 brings with it Activation Lock, which makes it harder for a thief to turn off the "Find My Phone" feature.

When a policeman asks me to do something, I can be overcome with suspicion.
For example, when a policeman asked me to pull over at the next exit on the freeway, I had a feeling it was for his benefit, rather than mine.
So when the New York Police Department started handing out flyers outside the city's Apple stores on Friday, I had to wonder how this would help them.
Well, it would appear that the police in New York are entirely fed up of chasing after iPhone thieves.
In New York, iPhone and iPad (http://reviews.cnet.com/ipad/) theft leaped 40 percent in 2012 (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57519902-37/iphone-ipad-thefts-jump-40-percent-in-nyc/). It's showing no signs of slowing.
So the NYPD would like all iPhone owners to download iOS 7 (http://reviews.cnet.com/apple-ios-7/) immediately.
As AllThingsD reports (http://allthingsd.com/20130921/police-in-new-york-really-want-you-to-download-ios-7/), the fliers explained: "Should your iPhone get lost or stolen, it cannot be reprogrammed without an Apple ID and password."
This is thanks to Activation Lock (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818), which prevents a thief from deactivating your Find My Phone feature.
There is a slight kink in the police's confidence, given that Apple is currently attempting to fix an iOS 7 lock screen hack (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57603787-83/apple-promises-to-fix-ios-7-lock-screen-hack/) that allows others unauthorized access to much of the innards of your iPhone.

“Attention Apple Users!!!!” reads a flyer cops began handing out Friday, the same day Apple started selling the new iPhone 5S and 5C. “The new iOS7 software update avaialble [sic] for your Apple product brings added security to your devices.”
“For additional information on iOS7 features visit www.apple.com,” (http://www.apple.com,”) the flyer helpfully suggests....

Yet another reason for me to avoid Apple products.

Then again, I can probably still hack into the phone to bypass the screen lock, even with the new version of their software if the phone owner has a Gmail account and the email gets delivered to the phone.

I did it to my step-son's phone after it was confiscated when we found out he was dealing drugs at school.
