View Full Version : Retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor laments 'alarming degree of public ignorance'

"The more I read and the more I listen, the more apparent it is that our society suffers from an alarming degree of public ignorance," O'Connor said. That ignorance starts in the earliest years of a child's schooling, she said, but often continues all the way through college and graduate school.O'Connor argued that learning about citizenship is just as important for American children as learning multiplication or how to write their names."We have to ensure that our citizens are well informed and prepared to face tough challenges," she said. "If there is a single child not learning about civics or not being exposed to what they must do as citizens, then all our lives are poorer for that."To combat what she sees as a dangerous lack of civics in schools, O'Connor founded icivics.org, a website for educators and students. The site uses games, lesson plans and activities to make learning about government and citizenship less boring.

Your thread has nothing to do with the subject. Really it was about ethics, liberal ethics. And gave a good account of the policies and actions that have brought this nation to the current state it is in.
The Liberal Creed: Punish the Innocent and Reward the Guilty
By Tom Trinko
Liberals are like Bizarro-World conservatives; that is, liberals do everything backwards. While conservatives believe that the guilty should be punished and those who are irresponsible should suffer the consequences of their bad choices, liberals believe that the guilty and irresponsible should be rewarded at the expense of the innocent and responsible people in America.
Susan Rice either lied about Benghazi or was irresponsible for not knowing the truth. Obama is rewarding her with a promotion. Samantha Power said that America is evil and should apologize for its actions, and she is being rewarded by being named U.S. ambassador to the U.N., where she will fit right in with all the dictators that condemn the U.S.
Meanwhile, the Benghazi whistle-blowers, who spoke truth to power, are being persecuted.
Liberals have always championed Supreme Court rulings that make it harder to convict the guilty. While we can all agree that beating a confession out of a suspect is wrong, liberals believe that physical evidence should be excluded if a police officer or judge made a mistake. For example, a man murdered a young girl after kidnapping her from the YMCA. He surrendered to police, and while being transported, he told police where the body was. Clearly only the killer could have that information. However, the courts ruled that the man must be freed since the statements were made without the killer's lawyer being present. The killer was not physically attacked or coerced.
The flip-side of rewarding criminals is punishing the innocent future victims of the criminals who are freed. Further, by undermining the legal system's ability to punish the guilty, liberals encourage more crime by reducing the perceived downside. That too punishes the innocent.

Default Our Moral Decay Will bear A Bitter Fruit Indeed..
The Rule of law, Liberty, Democracy and Sovereignty ARE the fundamental strengths of America.. Obvious that the democratic process is often messy and full of strife, however it makes the political system responsive to a large and multi-cultural blend of peoples from all over the globe. This has given rise to the great strengths our nation has enjoyed and used so successfully to survive. We should consider that America’s top competitors and greatest enemies lack such a huge and vital advantage and instead of abandoning it we should promote it ! ----------------In the rest of the world the basic foundation of morality, justice and the Rule of Law that our nation has most of its existence fostered does not exist and has in its place a system of greed, corruption and distrust of higher principles that social decay and poor leadership tends to promote. This huge difference in leaders past and those presently in charge has been why our political and civil liberties have been eroded so greatly. The utter absence of accountability on the part of those who control political power has launched us down this path towards darkness and ruin. -----------Therefore the big question is , are our great problems the end result of our decaying and dying morality. A morality based upon Judeo-Christian principles and insured by adherence to the Constitution as gifted to us by our founders? The short answer is yes. The correct answer that can be found by examining our moral decay is that it's fruits are the harvest we are now reaping. Sure it matters who the players are that lead the charge against decency and justice but in the end its our responsibility to reject those people and their policies. In that we have failed and most certainly will pay a heavy and deadly price. It is to late to attempt to bail water after the ship has sunk. We took more than just prayer out of our schools and now we shall pay the price. We are not guilt free and innocent in our current misery and future calamities. For we failed to stand up for honor, moral principles and basic civility in our daily lives. --Tyr

Really it was about ethics, liberal ethics.
No, the article and the thread have to do with a lack of education, a basic lack of knowledge about civics. There have been loads of studies and reports that show the level of knowledge by citizens of the US about the US government is pathetically low. As is the knowledge of current events. More from the article that is to the point of the title and thread:
Two-thirds of Americans cannot name a single Supreme Court justice, former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor told the crowd that packed into a Boise State ballroom to hear her Thursday.About one-third can name the three branches of government. Fewer than one-fifth of high school seniors can explain how citizen participation benefits democracy."Less than one-third of eighth-graders can identify the historical purpose of the Declaration of Independence, and it's right there in the name," she said.O'Connor touted civics education during her keynote address at the "Transforming America: Women and Leadership in the 21st Century" conference, put on by the Andrus Center for Public Policy. She also described being a female lawyer in the 1950s, and challenged her listeners to help the next generation of leaders reach their goals.
It has nothing to do with 'liberal' or 'conservative' or 'ethics'.

I would not expect any different. Your attempt to derail a thread about a lack of education and knowledge about civics with your already posted elsewhere 'need more church' nonsense is noted and has been reported.
If you do not have a comment about the actual topic, I ask you merely keep your discussion of a different topic to it's own thread, rather than spamming it across the forum.

Tyr. Now it appears Arbo is convinced he/she/it is a member of the Administration, and has risen to the newly appointed, low-level of Obama-ism where he/she/it demands everyone obey his CESSPOOL orders from BELOW.

Civics simply is no longer taught in schools to a degree necessary for basic knowledge. So, the justice is correct, that pretty much those under 35, unless encouraged from outside of school to be interested, have much of a framework for understanding our government. It's part of the reason they are for the most part unconcerned with things like the NSA or IRS, unless of course they should be audited.
If you have kids, encourage your school to implement the "We the People" program from center for civic education.
