<!-- google_ad_section_start --> YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) -- Japan on Tuesday unveiled its biggest warship since World War II, a huge flat-top destroyer that has raised eyebrows in China and elsewhere because it bears a strong resemblance to a conventional aircraft carrier.
The ship, which has a flight deck that is nearly 250 meters (820 feet) long, is designed to carry up to 14 helicopters. Japanese officials say it will be used in national defense — particularly in anti-submarine warfare and border-area surveillance missions — and to bolster the nation's ability to transport personnel and supplies in response to large-scale natural disasters, like the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
Though the ship — dubbed "Izumo" — has been in the works since 2009, its unveiling comes as Japan and China are locked in a dispute over several small islands located between southern Japan and Taiwan. For months, ships from both countries have been conducting patrols around the isles, called the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyutai in China.
The tensions over the islands, along with China's heavy spending on defense and military modernization, have heightened calls in Japan for beefed-up naval and air forces. China recently began operating an aircraft carrier that it refurbished after purchasing from Russia, and is reportedly moving forward with the construction of another that is domestically built.
Japan, China and Taiwan all claim the islands.
Though technically a destroyer, some experts believe the new Japanese ship could potentially be used in the future to launch fighter jets or other aircraft that have the ability to take off vertically. That would be a departure for Japan, which has one of the best equipped and best trained naval forces in the Pacific but which has not sought to build aircraft carriers of its own because of constitutional restrictions that limit its military forces to a defensive role. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As USA under Obama proves to be weak, the vacuum is being filled by others. I think it's a little over the top to blame this all on Obama. Japan has been slowly moving away from its pure defense posture to an "active deterrence" posture, meaning they are building multi-role offensive capabilities to deal with the growing threat from China. It is true that there is a growing feeling that the US may not be able to to defend Japan down the road but this has been going since before the election of Obama.
In any case, I say good for them. I hope the Japanese decide to fully take the leash off and we let them do it. We won't find a more capable ally to check China's reach into the Pacific.

China needs oil and resources. Those can be acquired in the south china sea and southeast asia. They also want Taiwan. The Philippines and Japan can be dealt with later. For now they are just sitting back and watching.

They are watching iran and the middle east. The brotherhood, which is the puppet of the saudi's is trying to reestablish the ottoman empire. With the saud's as the new head. That's what all the fighting there is about and our DiC is supporting it. But iran wants it's own caliphate, encompassing iraq, syria and lebanon. Afgan and pakistan are probably in their sights as well.

Then we have Russia, which would like to regain its former empire. They have aligned themselves with iran. Perhaps a mutual defense treaty. They have their eyes on Ukraine, Georgia and the many stans. Again because of the resources and available ports.

Now we move west to Europe. Wimps is the best description I can give them. When push comes to shove they will do nothing.

The US has always been the great protector and peace keeper. Not any more. We have a DiC who would rather play golf and go on vacation than deal with belligerent countries.

The match in the tinder box is Israel. Should Israel strike iran's nuclear facilities then all hell breaks lose and the treaties and alliance are called on. Much like 1914. The sides will square off and the world war will begin.

Our current DiC is the Nevile Chamberlain of our times. We can only hope there's an American Churchill waiting in the wings.

They are changing their constitution. And you don't actually believe this ship is just for helicopters do you? It was built to be used as a true carrier.

I saw 10 photos of that ship and believe you are correct. Including aerial shots it seems that at the least vertical TO airplanes can fly from that deck. I am shocked the tonnage of the ship is so low.

I had no idea they are changing the constitution so they can have a force like they properly need.

Not allowed... Japan gave up the right to operate fixed wing aircraft and to operate Carriers with her surrender at the end of WWII.

It is against her constitution to do so.

Also, without a ski jump VTOL aircraft would not be viable... they could never take off with full fuel or weapons loads.

The closest comparison is the current WASP class operated by the USN/USMC.

Gaffer. I agree our navy is useless...especially under our Present Defense Secy, and Obama. Both of them are working very hard to destroy OUR ENTIRE MILITARY, not just the Navy.

Yes. I still have great pride on OUR NAVY, not MY NAVY. I see it every day, in some form. And Yes. I am probably more aware of our military capabilities....because I have made it my business to remain as up-to-date, legally, as I can on such matters.
I also agree. China IS our enemy. Never questioned that honestly. But, I also maintain high confidence in knowing. China's military might...is only as strong as it's HUNGRY fighting forces who are today...FORCED to serve, stay quiet, never complain, and do so knowing...THEIR FAMILIES will suffer more if they question their military obligations.

From Reuters: Friction over the South China Sea, one of the world's most important waterways, has surged as China uses its growing naval might to more forcefully assert its vast claims over the oil- and gas-rich sea, raising fears of a military clash.
Japan's new flat-top doesn't have catapults for fixed wing aircraft — yet — but certainly the helicopters the boat carries will help patrol what Japan takes to be its sovereign territory.
Also, the folks over at the American Enterprise Institute note that its deck length — 248 meters — is greater than that of other fixed wing carriers (http://www.aei-ideas.org/2013/08/japans-new-helicopter-carrier-more-than-meets-the-eye/), notably "Britain's HMS Invincible -class ships, which are 209 meters in length."
Nonetheless, they say the boat is primarily for relief from natural disasters, something Japan has had no shortage of over the last few years.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- The Navy has decided to scrap the USS Miami instead of repairing the nuclear-powered submarine because of budget cuts accompanied by growing costs of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officials said Tuesday.
Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of undersea warfare, said repairing the Groton, Conn.-based sub would have meant canceling work on dozens of other ships because of new budget constraints.
He said that would've hurt the Navy's overall readiness.
"The Navy and the nation simply cannot afford to weaken other fleet readiness in the way that would be required to afford repairs to Miami," Breckenridge said in a statement.
Inspections revealed a significant number of components in the torpedo room and auxiliary machinery room would require replacement, further driving up the repair costs for the USS Miami. The Navy originally said it planned to repair the submarine but the discovery of additional damage raised the cost, originally estimated to be about $450 million.
A shipyard worker, Casey James Fury, of Portsmouth, N.H., was sentenced to 17 years in prison after admitting he set fire to the Miami, which was in dry dock during a 20-month overhaul at the Kittery shipyard. It took 12 hours and the efforts of more than 100 firefighters to save the Los Angeles-class attack submarine.
