On this anniversary of America's independence, I say thank you to every man and woman who has served in our military. They have risked and, in too many cases, lost so much. This particular story resonated with that theme.
End of a long trip home for soldier killed in VietnamAn Army (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/army/) aviator who was shot down over Vietnam (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/vietnam/) 43 years ago Sunday finally made the long trip home and was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/arlington-national-cemetery/) this week.
Spc. 5 John L. Burgess (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/burgess/), 21, was the chief of a five-man crew when their helicopter was hit and crashed into the thick jungles of South Vietnam on June 30, 1970.
The remains of three crew members were recovered, but Burgess (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/burgess/)‘ could not be found — setting in motion a 20-year effort by the Defense Department (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/united-states-department-of-defense/)’s Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/war-missing-personnel-office/) to find and identify his remains.
That mission ended Tuesday when Burgess (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/burgess/) was buried with full honors at Arlington in a ceremony attended by friends and family.
