Obama offers a Trojan horse.......O' yes, accept if you dare..... -Tyr Will Obama Save Catholic Schools?
<!-- begin blogger thumbs --> <!-- end blogger thumbs --> One of the quirks of President Obama is that he appears liberal, but is strikingly pragmatic. This idiosyncrasy may benefit Catholic schools. Obama supports charter schools, even though this view is opposed by teachers' unions.
For those who need a refresher course, charter schools are run by independent agencies, are funded with public dollars, but are not formal parts of the public school district. While they must match educational standards of government, charter schools are free to address matters like dress code, teachers' salaries, and organization of the curriculum on their own terms.
Obama's policy has opened up the possibility that Catholic schools could be turned into charter schools. This would address the alarming rates at which parish schools have been closing over the past two decades, basically for want of income. In the Diocese of Brooklyn this past week, it was announced that some parish schools (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/nyregion/08schools.html?_r=1) previously slated for closure, would be transformed into New York City charter schools. Praised by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the ability of the parish school to involve parents, instill discipline and raise the career aspirations of its students. Might this decision become a national trend? If it did, President Obama might well go down in the history books as the "savior of Catholic schools."
I do not wish to suggest that the president is blind to the objections against such a marriage of public funds to schools run by churches. Teachers' unions have generally opposed charter schools when they have been proposed as rivals to public schools, meaning that money is taken away from public instruction. In fact, there are many instances where charter schools have become a money-making proposition for a politically connected entrepreneur who employs non-union teachers at sub-scale salaries and merely "teaches to the test." There was also a lot of political posturing by right-wing politicians who pretended that denying money to public schools via vouchers or funds to charter schools shows concern that non-white and poor parents would "have the same rights to private school education as congress' members."
I don't understand why Catholic schools have been slow to become charter schools. More than a few Evangelical http://onfaith.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/catholicamerica/2009/02/obama_savior_of_catholic_schoo.html

Why would Obama want to save Catholic schools? Perhaps if Catholics didn't have to spend so much money on legal defense, they could save their own schools.
The federal government should observe the separation of church and state.

Can you point to the schools that have went belly up because they had to spend any funding on a legal defense? Or will you set a record and bail from your 7,000th thread?

If anything Obama does saves anything, it will be completely by accident... Rumor has it that Obama is going to save every damn one of those "57 states"... talk about ignoring a blunder and one that clearly points to the true IQ of the man.. I hear he even once saved a Navy "corpse"man too. ;) Tis' why I laugh so hard every time I hear or read about some fool bragging about what a genius he is. I can read just fine, a reference to his policy is not an explanation of his policy. A charter school by definition is funded with public dollars but that has been in existence far longer than BO has been POTUS. Where is the meat that is leading to your ire?

Apparently you are confused as to what a fact actually is. It is supportable and provable. You should try and present some rather than rely on your typical passive-aggressive blather. It would be fun and you might gain some ability in actually presenting an intelligent conservative argument.

Is not a charter school an establishment of education who accepts gov funds that would normally go to a public school system? If so, and I believe it is, any such establishment, be it Catholic, Private or even a home schooling group be classified as a gov assisted charter school.
I am all for charter schools and would like to see more and more of them continue with the success that most of them are having. I'd also like to see more and more public institutions of education (most of which are failing) have their funds transferred to charter schools till we have phased out ALL failing public schools.
A warning to the wise, however, any time you take money from big bro or sis, you are asking for trouble and the type of FULL CONTROL that we see with most other gov agencies as well with more fascist tyranny that demands opposing beliefs, morals and tradition be obliterated. I support the charter school system over gov/public schools BUT I am more in favor of private schooling from communities, churches and home school groups where the best of the best are being taught and are excelling at the top of the graduating percentile where many such students receive scholarships.
My wife and I home schooled for years (until my kids were ready for sports). I wish they had the same legislation going on then as they do now so that we could have continued to home school with our children ALSO participating in sports. That is neither here nor there and I'm truly blessed and thankful that they are doing well. In fact, my daughter received many honors and is likely to gain FULL scholarships to anywhere of her choosing. I can't count the MANY home school kids who have excelled in both academics as well as the arts but if we are not careful, the gov will definitely put a stop to any means of education that does not "indoctrinate". If such private education was good enough for the best of the best within the history of the world (including our founders) it is certainly good enough for us.
One need only look at how B.O. and Holder treated a family seeking asylum from Germany where the children will likely be taken away from the parents who chose to home school their children rather than indoctrinate them. I find it extremely troubling when we provide "AMNESTY" for those who have disregarded our laws YET turn away a family that was truly in need.
Make no bones about it. B.O. is against all that is good with America and if there is EVER an instance that he seems to be doing the RIGHT thing....look out. There's a reason lurking somewhere behind all the pleasantries.
