Obama and his umbrella holding Marines

So Obama is giving an outdoor press conference with Turkey's PM. It starts to rain and he calls over a couple of marines to hold umbrellas over them to shield them from the rain.
It all made for some funny pictures but the linked article states that what Obama did was in violation of Marine Corps regulations. It seems like nitpicking but I became curious as to why male Marines are specifically not allowed to carry an umbrella while female marines can.

Any former Marines have an answer?

Marine in the family. Simple answer. Marines are not ISSUED an umbrella. That's why they wear a Cover(civilians call them hats).

com on, guys. We have WAY more important issues to be pissed at Obama for. In any case, even the Marine Corps regulations differentiate between 'carry' and 'use'...


The relevant portion of the regulation reads, “3035. UMBRELLAS (Female Marineshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://dailycaller.com/2013/05/16/obama-breaches-marine-umbrella-protocol/#)). Female Marines may carry an all-black, plain standard or collapsible umbrella at their option during inclement weather with the service and dress uniforms. It will be carried in the left hand so that the hand salute can be properly rendered. Umbrellas may not be used/carried in formation nor will they be carried with the utility uniform.”

So, though the regs themselves prohibit a male Marine from 'carrying' an umbrella, they do not prohibit him from 'using' one. He was, however 'using' the umbrella in the wrong hand (should have been left hand), which was a violation of regulations.

My son (the Marine for Life) told me MARINES don't need an umbrella', or use them in Uniform. Only WUSSIES need them!
