This is the Prime Minister ousted during the 1999 coup.
What did he do to warrant being tossed?
He wanted to replace Pervez Musharraf as the General-in-Chief of the Army, but due to Constitutional restrictions could not fire him. So he forged a resignation letter while the general was flying on a commercial airliner back into Pakistan. Sharif then forbade the airliner, with around 250 civilian passengers on board, from landing within Pakistan.
General Musharraf had no idea of what was happening on the ground, but this wrangling nearly lead to the plane crashing and killing everyone on board. It was a hijacking from the ground. Without Musharraf's knowledge, the army rose up and took control of the government, starting with the Islamabad airport. The plane landed with only 7 minutes of fuel left.
This guy is bad news for Pakistan, and bad news for the United States and the war on terror.
