WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service apologized Friday for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.

Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews. Her remarks came at an American Bar Association gathering.

Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong.

Jenny Beth Martin, the national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots, said the apology wasn't good enough. She called on the IRS workers involved to resign and Congress to investigate.
"The IRS has demonstrated the most disturbing, illegal and outrageous abuse of government power," Martin said in a statement."This deliberate targeting and harassment of tea party groups reaches a new low in illegal government activity and overreach. It is suspicious that the activity of these 'low-level workers' was unknown to IRS leadership at the time it occurred."
Martin also urged President Obama to apologize "for his administration ignoring repeated complaints by these broad grassroots organizations of harassment by the IRS in 2012, and make concrete and transparent steps today to ensure this never happens again."
Conservative groups complained during the election that they were being harassed by the IRS. They said the agency asked them an inordinate number of questions to justify their tax-exempt status, and several joined with conservative lawyer Jay Sekulow to push back on the IRS.

Kentucky 9/12 Project is one of the conservative organizations that joined with Sekulow to complain of government overreach.
Its executive director, Eric Wilson, said his group applied for tax-exempt status in December 2010. He said the IRS responded with an 88-page questionnaire that sought all the organization's correspondence, the names of its members -- along with details of group's activity on Facebook and Twitter. It was eventually granted its nonprofit designation last month.

"I would love to say that I feel vindicated, but to think that the government has the capability to reach into the lives of people in our organization is not only scary but describes the times we live in today," Wilson said of the apology.
Certain tax-exempt charitable groups can conduct political activities but it cannot be their primary activity.

the way they were targeted it's now admitted is IF the group had the words or the name Patriot or Tea Party in the Tax-exempt application they were flagged for review.

She blames "low-level workers in Cincinnati". but lawyers that have been fighting the issue for the gorups say that it happened in at least 18 state. And that it could not have been initiated oe mandated nation wide by "low-level workers" out of one office.

PLUS the nature of the IRS actions were more than just reviews of the tax exempt status. The IRS asked for the groups list of donors and other info on their supporters.

But hey sorry to bring it up the Gov't can do no wrong... I'm wrong for questioning federal authority... the conservative groups should have just given the IRS everything. if they had done nothing wrong whats the problem. why should they question law enforcement ALL THE TIME. All of the examples above are taken from actual IRS correspondence received by ACLJ’s 27 clients. Though IRS officials blamed “low-level” employees in the Cincinnati office, which is the central IRS office in charge of tax exemptions, French said the abuse was far more widespread. ACLJ’s clients dealt with inquiries from IRS offices from “coast to coast.” Of ACLJ’s 27 clients, 15 finally had their status approved after 6-7 months with legal help. There are 12 groups whose status remains in limbo.

Why the IRS Abruptly Apologized to the Tea Party

It came as a surprise when the Internal Revenue Service apologized, seemingly out of the blue, to a number of Tea Party groups for unfairly scrutinizing their tax exempt status on Friday. Now we know why the apology came when it did.

The Associated Press' Stephen Ohlemacher reports a federal watchdog report coming out this week will show senior IRS officials knew about the unfair scrutiny as far back as 2011. The report from the Treasury Department's inspector general shows Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups, was informed that groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriot" or "9/12 Project" in their names were being targeted for extra questioning at a meeting on June 29, 2011. During Lerner's apology on Friday, he blamed the targeting on lower-level tax agents. The report seems to show Lerner was telling the truth on Friday. The report shows he told the agents to change the criteria for flagging groups "immediately."

The focus will now become whether or not IRS commissioner Doug Shulman knew about the questions when he testified that no Tea Party groups were being targeted for unfair scrutiny in front of Congress in 2012. The report doesn't shay whether or not Shulman was informed about the Tea Party questioning, but it does show the IRS's chief counsel was. It's standard procedure for the counsel and commissioner to discuss this sort of thing before a Congressional hearing. Shulman's term as head of the IRS ended at the end of last year and he was appointed by President Bush. But Obama has yet to announce a replacement.

Maybe it’s because two-term presidents suffer from hubris, or merely that after an administration has been in office for years, it inevitably makes mistakes (and too often tries to cover them up). But recent news reports ought to make Democrats at least a little nervous about the next few months and even 2014.
First, the administration started digging a hole for itself on Benghazi, with a high-level Foreign Service officer raising questions about the Obama administration’s handling of the September incident and subsequent behavior.


And then, the IRS “apologized” for targeting tea party groups for extra scrutiny, indicating a pattern of behavior that, whether true or not, suggests politically-motivated behavior.


Now, the Washington Post is up with an article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/will-obama-suffer-the-second-term-curse/2013/05/11/3d6b3cde-ba61-11e2-aa9e-a02b765ff0ea_story.html?hpid=z2) asking whether the president will suffer a “second-term curse.”


Democrats surely will respond that the Obama administration had nothing to do with the IRS’s behavior and that it is Republicans who are trying to politicize both controversies to score points against President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.


Regardless of whom you believe, the controversies take attention away from the GOP’s problems and could put the president, and his party, on the defensive for the next few weeks or months. (Recent coverage about the implementation of the administration’s health care plan also suggests a rocky road over the next year.)


The last five presidents elected to a second consecutive term – Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – all suffered through problems, ranging from economic and foreign policy to personal.


Obama may or may not join that group (not all of whom suffered a stinging defeat in his second-term election), but Democratic strategists have to hope that media’s focus returns to Republicans and their opposition to the president’s agenda.

IRS Targeting of Conservatives Began in 2010; Not Skeptical on White House Involvement

Good Morning America's Jon Karl on Monday exposed new details about the growing scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservatives. The correspondent revealed, "I've obtained a soon-to-be released investigative report that shows the IRS started targeting Tea Party groups more than three years ago." He added that this was "despite [the IRS] publicly claiming otherwise."


According to the journalist, phrases such as "limiting government," "educating on the Bill of Rights" and "criticizing how the country is being run" were enough to have the IRS start tracking them. However, Karl steered clear of culpability when it came to the Obama administration. He explained, "The White House said it had no idea that the IRS was targeting Tea Party groups."

George Stephanopoulos, a former Democratic operative, focused his question on how scandals such as the IRS and Benghazi will hamper Obama's political agenda: "...The IRS, these questions about Benghazi, trying to get the health care program back up and running. Do they have a plan to get back on offense now at the start of the second term?"


Shouldn't Stephanopoulos's real concern be on what are the facts are?

If it weren't for an income tax (and the fact that you get a tax break if you're married and have kids), we would likely not be talking about gay marriage and the need to make it a federally mandated "right".

If it weren't for an income tax, we probably would not have an IRS with powers that exceed their constitutionally allowed authority.

If it weren't for an income tax, there would be no Occupy Wall Street movement that insists that the "rich" pay their "fair share" (funny, how the Nazis went after the Jews claiming they were rich and in control of everything, then once they got them out of the picture they went after everyone else.. but I digress)

If it weren't for an income tax, we probably would not have these present day abuses by presidents (didn't Clinton also do the same thing? hmmm)

In short, an income tax is a means of income redistribution. Funding the government is only a secondary objective to those who advocate it. It is part of the Left's long term vision of a socialist world.

Me? I think a national sales tax instead of an income tax would be a good thing. Perhaps a flat tax.
