How bad is it? Enrollment in the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program has hit an all-time high of 8.9 million, up from 455,000 in 1960 and 7.4 million when President Obama took office in January 2009. Since 2009, the number of people on disability has increased more than the number of people working.


All this has happened as medical advances have allowed more of us to stay on the job, and laws have been passed banning discrimination against the handicapped in workplaces.


But it turns out that once people get on the disability train, they rarely get off. In 2011, 650,000 people left the program, but 36 percent of those left because they had no choice — they died. Another 52 percent left because they moved to other programs. Only 6 percent returned to work, and only 3.6 percent went back to work because their medical condition had improved.


How did this happen? For starters, we allowed it. It has become socially acceptable in some parts of America to not work when you actually could, and instead to collect a check from the taxpayers. And in some parts of America, this is utterly commonplace. In Hale County, Ala., according to a recent NPR series, nearly one in four working-age adults is on disability. And on the day their checks arrive, NPR noted, “banks stay open late, Main Street fills up with cars, and anybody looking to unload an old TV or armchair has a yard sale.”

There are many people who are hurt and cannot work. I have no problem helping those people -but the MA bombers are perfect examples of pigs feeding at the taxpayer paid trough

Yes I am on SSI due to illness and to give you a idea how bad it is when I first filed the paperwork out and had my first interview in GA where I live I was told if I get a letter from KY , TN, AL, or a few other states to take them serious because GA was so busy they were sending apps to other states to look at , the man told me do to the lack of work they had kids just out of HS filling because of a football injury and other ridicules reasons

We all know. That has been proven to be the most effective method for OBAMA, and the DEMOCRATS to BUY votes without investing any of their own money.
It works....UNTIL the money runs out.

1, Alice (can't mention last name) is grossly overweight. She has been on disability for many years. She has little working experience. She has OCD she tells me. She collects about $1,200 per month (not precise) I know her since I sold her the mobile home she lives in and got her a loan where she had to fully disclose her income. I over time did learn why she is on disability.Alice also has help to go shopping since she does not drive and has to be over 400 pounds. I do not count her paid help as income to her.

2.Marilyn (no last name will be supplied) my younger sister. She has from at least 1995 collected disability. I am not 100 percent sure of what her disability is but she is also grossly overweight and like Alice must be in the 400 pound or more range of weight. And she has had almost nonstop heart problems it seems to me. Our youngest sister collects her own check for taking care of Marilyn. I don't know the sum Marilyn gets but was told the check to the younger sister is over $600 per month. That sister also works part time as a teacher.

3. Randy (my son in law) collects about $80,000 or more, half is tax free and he is disabled. He did not want to be on disability since it only pays him 81 percent of his earnings. It cost him way over $20,000 per year. With overtime, he could top $125,000 per year. To recover to live normally he was forced to go to work for an internet banking company. The Federal Government pays none of this to him since it is tied to his state public employees system which as I understand it invests heavily in stocks and bonds.

Let me be clear - in no way was I including you in the ranks of the freeloaders. You have a long history of working while in pain - so if you thought I was including you please accept my apology

The problem is we have so many freeloaders in the system it makes if harder for those who need help to get it

What amazes me is that people who vote for free stuff lower the price of their support over time. In Brazil and Venezuela the price has dropped to a monthly "Cesta Básica" (the same word in Spanish and Portuguese). When socialism has reached full bloom as in Cuba, people sell more than their vote. They become leaders of the Comite de la Defesa de Revolucion where they get extra rations for accusing their neighbors (even falsely) of crimes against the state.
