View Full Version : Favourite tune your mind just can't shake off ?

I've been taking time out to trawl through the various songs, etc I have recorded from years ago, tunes and performances that at the time I thought were spectacularly good ... and which stuck in my mind, stubbornly refusing to leave it, for several days at a time ...

What I'm posting here is one such example - THIS one proved especially difficult to 'shift' ....

... over in my part of the world, we have the Eurovision Song Contest. It's basically a 'semi-amateur' contest, where countries from across Europe (and a couple barely qualifying as being European) offer, from contests held internally to decide a winner, each supply one song which in turn goes 'head to head' in a contest against the offerings of all the other competing countries.

They're pretty uniformly forgettable and mediocre .... BUT, every now and again, exceptions turn up.

Remember 'ABBA', a Swedish pop group popular in the Eighties ? Their route to international stardom originated from Eurovision, and their song 'Waterloo', the Swedish entry.

Links below lead to performances offered from the Icelandic 2010 entry. It failed to win, and I've not heard of its lead singer since the Eurovision performance. But still ... I enjoyed it at the time, and to this day I just don't get how it failed to win that year.

... It's sung in English (!) ....

So, three YouTube links.

The first is of the official video ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE6Sayu7JyM

Next, its broadcast on RUV, I think (Icelandic National TV .. based in Reykjavik) ... the logo looks familiar, anyway ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcXDF3d6PYM

Finally, its performance at Eurovision itself. From the British feed put out by the BBC on the night - Graham Norton offering commentary ...

Another one. Broadcast Christmas Day, 2011, throughout the UK. Freeview Channel Pick TV. In its entirety, approx a one hour show, of Riverdance's performance in China.

This is an excerpt from it, one song sung during the performance. I suspect it'll appeal to the ladies here ?

While I'm at it, a reply to Jafar from earlier (inspired by Riverdance again). With due acknowledgment to a certain Gillian Gibbons .....

... WOW ! Robert, I'm grateful to you for this. The song you've chosen was one that was a firm favourite of mine from a couple of years ago. Unlike you, I never did buy any of her DVD's ... which is something I should do something about !!

And yes, this is another one that 'stuck with me' for a solid week, at least ....

Try this one, folks. I recorded this video clip just a few weeks ago, on our '4Music' channel. 'Stand By Me: Ben E King.'

She's Welsh, and more usually an opera singer. All the same, she's been diversifying over the past couple of years. Two offerings here from her, starting with (sorry about the ad, which needs to be skipped ..) ..

Stand by me is a favorite of mine too. I have that DVD also I believe.

On Enya's site, I located some other songs of hers that are also awesome.

On Fastballs DVD, some of the songs are great but some others are decent listening.

I believe also that Stand By Me was a song played in the movie also have called Stand By Me.

The movie was about several young boys who as pals walked the rails to see a dead body and what happened to them as they did things. It starts out with one of the boys as an adult remembering the old days.

Many thanks, Robert. It seems we share very similar music preferences. Also thanks for the 'Stand By Me' info ... I didn't know any of that information.

I'm going to do some digging around for Enya songs in the next few days .. I really must strive to keep my music collection on her as complete as possible -

Thanks again for the reminder about her.

Songwriters: KEITH REID, GARY BROOKER
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Couldn't agree more on Bonanza, Tyr (yes, it did reach the UK, and was very popular here ... ITV bought up copies of all the episodes).

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" is the debut song by the British rock band Procol Harum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procol_Harum), released 12 May 1967. The single reached number one in the UK Singles Chart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Singles_Chart) on 8 June1967 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_in_music), and stayed there for six weeks.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-1) Without much promotion, it reached No. 5 on the US charts, as well.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-2) One of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_of_Love), it is one of fewer than 30 singles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles_(music)) to have sold over 10 million (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_singles) copies worldwide.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-3)
With its haunting Bach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bach)-derived instrumental melody, soulful vocals, and unusual lyrics—by the song's co-authors Gary Brooker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Brooker), Keith Reid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Reid),[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-pc49-4) and Matthew Fisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Fisher) — "A Whiter Shade of Pale" reached No. 1 in several countries when released in 1967. In the years since, it has become an enduring classic. It was the most played song in the last 75 years in public places in the UK (as of 2009),[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-5) and the United Kingdom performing rights groupPhonographic Performance Limited (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonographic_Performance_Limited) in 2004 recognised it as the most-played record by British broadcasting of the past 70 years.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-6) Also in 2004, Rolling Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone) placed "A Whiter Shade of Pale" No. 57 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rolling_Stone%27s_500_Greatest_Songs_of_Al l_Time).
In 1977, the song was named joint winner (along with Queen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(band))'s "Bohemian Rhapsody (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemian_Rhapsody)") of the Best British Pop Single 1952–1977 at the Brit Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brit_Awards).[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-7) In 1998 the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Hall_of_Fame).[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-8) More than 1000 recorded cover versions by other artists are known.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale#cite_note-9) The song has been included in many music compilations over the decades and has also been used in the soundtracks of numerous films, including The Big Chill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Chill_(film)), Purple Haze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Haze_(film)), Breaking the Waves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_the_Waves), The Boat That Rocked (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boat_That_Rocked) and notably in Martin Scorsese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Scorsese)'s segment of New York Stories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stories). Cover versions of the song have also been featured in many films, for example by King Curtis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Curtis) in Withnail and I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Withnail_and_I) and by Annie Lennox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Lennox)in The Net (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Net_(1995_film)).
The original writing credits were for Brooker and Reid only. On 30 July 2009, Matthew Fisher won co-writing credit for the music in a unanimous ruling from the Law Lords (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_Lords).

My friend thanks for this thread. Man did it give me cause to rethink of my youth! And remember why I fought the demons that tried to slay me!! Somebody was looking out for me, thank God-- And I do exactly that too.

Was exactly what I needed tonight after finding out this afternoon that one of my childhood friends has now passed on. He was a very nice guy and got messed up into drugs but overcame that demon back in the late 80's. I have missed him these many long years and will not continue to do so.We must remember that we are not promised one more second , hour , day or year.

Why So Blessed

There went I but for the blessed grace of God
Tender love from mother and guidance from dad
That understood the need for love and the rod
We all should be so blessed as to have had
Parents and family that loved us ever so deep
Sacrificing so much for our safety and good health
Guarding our lives while we slumber in our sleep
Wishing for our happiness, love and greater wealth....TYR

Johnny Cash , the Man In Black PERFORMS -Big River

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_21p14TAXM

Big River, so CASH !!!!!!
"Big River"

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.

Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.

Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

This song gets me every time. Songwriter was brilliant but Cash's version magnified it a hundred fold. So fitting that the Man In Black performed this song before passing on!!
You can feel his pain...... Simply amazing , quite often I simply have to stop the song before its completed. --Tyr

I thought this thread had more potential left to it, so I'm revisiting it tonight.

Earlier, I posted two Katherine Jenkins links. Well ... adding two more tonight. They're actually a tribute to her, in their way. As the first of these shows, she has her own sense of patriotism, of appreciation for our own military and what they go through.

REQUIEM FOR A SOLDIER ...

Lyrics -

You never lived to see
What you gave to me
One shining dream of hope and love
Life and liberty

With a host of brave unknown soldiers
For your company, you will live forever
Here in our memory

In fields of sacrifice
Heroes paid the price
Young men who died for old men's wars
Gone to paradise

We are all one great band of brothers
And one day you'll see we can live together
When all the world is free

I wish you'd lived to see
All you gave to me
Your shining dream of hope and love
Life and liberty

We are all one great band of brothers
And one day you'll see - we can live together
When all the world is free.

Totally agree, but of course. Maybe she hasn't made much of a mark overseas, then ... I've known of her for something like ten years. She's more naturally an opera singer, as you'll have seen from these latest clips. But more recently she's diversified into pop.

I'll PM you with a link I found on YouTube earlier ... not suitable for posting here, as it apparently scrolls from song to song on its own. Using the link address will allow you to navigate the selections freely.

Wow ! An amazingly talented singer ... and so young. Robert, thanks for posting this .. a privilege to listen to.

Katherine Jenkins sang from age 4, though I've no idea how good she was by the time she'd reached Jackie's age. I'd be surprised if she managed to be her equal.

Here's Katherine's version of Nessun Dorma -

Have Americans heard of Susan Boyle ?

Now .. she was a very LATE discovery ... on Britain's Got Talent. Looked for all the world like a no-hoper to everyone at the time, but stunned everyone with her performance.

But don't just take my word for it .... !! ...

Sir Drummond. Marvelous, and Beautiful. Thank you.
It took me a few hours before I realized where I had heard the instrumental version of that wonderful song.
And finally. This evening. After listening again.
I recognized that tune as the Theme Music to a World War II series on Television called "BAND OF BROTHERS."

It was eight, ten, or twelve part series about a Company of Americans who fought their way across Europe
after D-DAY, June 6. 1944.
So. Listening to her sing is a heart-warming reminder of not only the wonderful words, but many faces
most of us possibly remember as our Fathers, and Grandfathers.
Thank you. I agree. Well worth listening.

Sir Drummond. Actually. It's of great value to everyone. I suppose that series should be available in Video Stores there in the U.K.
If not. If you go online. I suspect, there's a possibility to get it sent to you somehow. But...be careful. Our Congress critters are talking about TAXING the Internet...you know? To pad another Illegal pocket or two?

It is a terrific series, written by a Veteran who recently passed away over here. And sadly. His death was seemingly left un-noticed by our LAME STREAM LAZY PRESS. Far be it from them to heap praise, or honor on someone who TOLD THE TRUTH.

I believe his name was Winters. The main character in the series who kept a journal throughout.

Katherine Jenkins is awesome. Susan Boyle is as well.

Let me try to relate them to Jackie Evancho.

Katherine causes my eyes to wet with deep admiration of her voice, her presentation and her way of moving her audience.

Susan is also very good.

I call Katherine a one tear singer.

Jackie brings out so much emotion that it hard to not cry. I keep trying to understand how some child can perform and do that. I believe a lot of people weep when she sings. Tears of joy.

Katherine has vast talent. What i have heard of Susan, ditto.

The guy that beat out Jackie in the competition for my values was not nearly as good. I think he got it because he is not a child and he won a gig in Las Vegas and as an adult fits that venue better than she would have. Still she bolted out of the gate and has performed on some of America's greatest stages. I can't recall his name but can't forget hers.

You also have a singer of immense talent who got famous years ago. Not any we have mentioned and I shall recall it when I am out walking. Must go right now or it won't happen today.

Ordering from American sites wouldn't be helpful in any case, as, remember, my Regional code will be different from yours (DVD Region code is 2 in the UK, so Region 1 discs won't be playable on my equipment). I've just been doing a bit of checking, and this seems to be readily available from the media offshoot of Sainsburys UK- and on Blu-Ray too, by the looks of it. I'll order the box set in the next few days.

I have two songs recently that I just can't let go off ... especially when I'm drifting off to sleep. If I stay focused on one it will not go away so I tried to go back and forth with the two of them and finally my mind will let go.

Both videos are pretty cool!!!

One is "Sail" by AWOLNATION but I don't watch their video of it. I watch Jeb Corliss as he is "Grinding the Crack". "Sail ... this is how I show my love" "I blame it on my A.D.D. baby"

The other one is "Someone I Used To Know" by Goteye.

Lyrics that get me "now and then I think of when we were together, like when you said you were so happy you could die". It also gets to me that it starts out so soft and gets more intense as it goes.
