Pres Obama, and the gun grabbers lost in the US Senate when the gun control bill failed to get enough votes

Get ready for sore loser Obama and his PR staff in the liberal media to blame the NRA and the bitter clingers who love their guns

The Senate on Wednesday defeated a vital background check amendment seen as the linchpin to Democrats' gun control bill, dealing a major setback to President Obama -- who lashed out at opponents in unusually blunt terms during remarks from the Rose Garden.

"All in all, this was a pretty shameful day for Washington," Obama said.

The vote was 54-46, with supporters falling six votes short of the required 60-vote threshold.

The failure of the background check proposal authored by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., now imperils the entire legislation. The proposal would have expanded background checks to gun shows and Internet sales while exempting personal transactions. The amendment was aimed at winning over reluctant conservatives, who were opposed to the more stringent background check plan in the existing bill.

It's unclear where supporters will go from here. They could try to vote again, or craft an alternative piece of legislation. Four Republicans voted for the amendment, but five Democrats voted against it. One of those Democrats was Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid -- who only switched his vote to oppose it because doing so allows Democrats to call up the measure again. Other Democrats who voted against the measure for non-procedural reasons were Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.

A sad day indeed for those who want to keep guns out of easy reach of nutcases. Perhaps they will think of the ramifications of their decision next time there is a school yard massacre.

You've still to address THIS lie...

Actually, you'll be shocked to know that the guns were kept out the Sandy Hook shooter's hands. He failed the background checks at the store when he went to purchase them, and was denied the sale. So instead, he went to where he knew guns were, shot his mother point-blank in the face, and took them.

I find it odd that they are trying to expand background checks to gun shows... because gun shows already utilize background checks that would have stopped the Sandy Hook shooter from purchasing anything stronger than an airsoft gun. Yes, that is correct, Jafar, they are passing laws that will require people to do what they're already doing, and this is why so many object to it.

Frankly, nothing short of a bullet in the brainpan would've stopped Sandy Hook from happening. He was up to a point where mass-murdering children was a perfectly acceptable direction to go in with his life. He didn't care that the weapons he used to do so with were illegally obtained, or that they were used to nefarious means. Just as a car thief no longer cares about speed limits and stop signs.

The problem is not what you think it is.

The problem here is the word infringes on. Such laws infringe on rights.

Hey shit for brains, if everything in this bill were law - it still would not have stopped New Town from happening

What idiots like you do not want to admit is criminals do not obey the law - so passing more laws will not have an impact

Joe Biden admits the DOJ "does not have time" to go after people who lie on the background checks that are done now

http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/18/biden-to-nra-we-dont-have-the-time-to-prosecute-people-who-lie-on-background-checks/

I know it would make sense and save lives to enforce the laws we have on the books now. But that would not make it harder for law abiding citizens to own guns. Which is what really what you really what to accomplish

The Obama cheerleaders are very unhappy

Joe Scarborough ✔ @JoeNBC (https://twitter.com/JoeNBC)
Voters will have their say. Thumbing your nose at 90% of Americans never pays.

Piers Morgan ✔ @piersmorgan (https://twitter.com/piersmorgan)
Imagine those Newtown family members at the Senate today - suddenly realising their lawmakers don't give a stuff about their dead children.

If you thought Scarborough was grumpy, here’s the statement from Bloomberg’s gun-grabber group (http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-control-background-check-senate-vote-live-2013-4#pm050220):

“Today’s vote is a damning indictment of the stranglehold that special interests have on Washington. More than 40 U.S. senators would rather turn their backs on the 90 percent of Americans who support comprehensive background checks than buck the increasingly extremist wing of the gun lobby.

Democrats – who are so quick to blame Republicans for our broken gun laws – could not stand united. And Republicans – who are so quick to blame Democrats for not being tough enough on crime – handed criminals a huge victory, by preserving their ability to buy guns illegally at gun shows and online and keeping the illegal trafficking market well-fed. Senators Manchin and Toomey – as well as Majority Leader Reid and Senators Schumer, Kirk, Collins, McCain and others – deserve real credit for coming together around a compromise bill that struck a fair balance, and President Obama and Vice-President Biden deserve credit for their leadership since the Sandy Hook massacre. But even with some bi-partisan support, a common-sense public safety reform died in the U.S. Senate at the hands of those who are more interested in attempting to protect their own political careers – or some false sense of ideological purity – than protecting the lives of innocent Americans. The only silver lining is that we now know who refuses to stand with the 90 percent of Americans – and in 2014, our ever-expanding coalition of supporters will work to make sure that voters don’t forget.”

Update: Here comes the vote on Cornyn’s bill that would force states to recognize concealed-carry permits issued by other states. Chances of passage: Zero.

Update: As expected, Cornyn’s reciprocity amendment failed — but it ended up getting more votes than Toomey/Manchin:

Here comes the assault-weapons ban. Over/under is 51 votes.

Update: Holy cow. The AWB goes down 40/60. Remember a few weeks ago when Reid claimed they didn’t have even 40 votes for it? He wasn’t kidding. They barely ended up with that much.

It’ll be a few minutes before the roll is up, but assuming Republicans voted against it unanimously, that means no fewer than 15 Democrats joined them. Yowza.

Update: Let the recriminations begin: Gun-control lobbyists are already grumbling about Joe Manchin giving up hope for his bill (http://www.buzzfeed.com/rubycramer/how-joe-manchin-blew-it) publicly this morning.

Update: If nothing passed today, the original bill’s surely not going to pass tomorrow. Reid bows to reality:

Paul Kane @pkcapitol (https://twitter.com/pkcapitol)
Reid will pull the entire gun bill from floor, likely tomorrow. No final vote. It will remain on leg calendar. Brought up some other time.

One of the Democrat Senators that voted against this was Mark Begich, from Alaska. He got elected under shady circumstances and is right to be very concerned about his re-election as Senator.

He's been running ads on the radio making sure everyone here knows he's not your normal Democrat which makes me chuckle every time I hear it.

It's funny when a Democrat is afraid of being labelled a Democrat.

Something else that struck me as funny is the picture of Obama and Biden as they were complaining about the Senate defeating the bill... check out Biden :

I know what you are saying, however when someone bad wants a gun, and the likelihood that they will use it to perform an atrocity is high, wouldn't you like to be able to prevent them from getting that gun?

Those who abuse their rights to the point of harming or killing others do not deserve those rights. That is why we have prisons is it not?

Usually in most parts of the USA, one may rely on being out in public as safety. Seldon does the bad guy wish to commit a crime in a crowd.

For those times I am not in a crowd, I have my personal pistol able to fire at least 10 rounds quickly. Thus far, it has worked fine.

Gallup: Only 4% of Americans Think Gun Control is an Important Problem
CNSNews.com) – Only 4 percent of Americans think guns and gun control are an important problem facing the country, according to Gallup, and far more Americans are concerned about the economy, unemployment and the federal debt.
In its poll (http://www.gallup.com/poll/161813/few-guns-immigration-nation-top-problems.aspx?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=syndication&utm_content=morelink&utm_term=All%20Gallup%20Headlines%20-%20Politics) from Apr. 4-7, Gallup surveyed 1,005 adults by telephone and asked, “What do you think is the most important problem facing the country today?”
