Multiple casualties are reported after at least two explosions were heard near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, according to the Boston Herald.
Witnesses reportedly heard two booms that sounded like two claps of thunder near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel.
The explosions occurred just before 3 p.m. Video of the scene showed a number of emergency crews in the area tending to victims and blood on the ground near the finish line.
"I saw two explosions. The first one was beyond the finish line. I heard a loud bang and I saw smoke rising," Boston Herald reporter Chris Cassidy, who was running in the marathon, told the newspaper. "I kept running and I heard behind me a loud bang. It looked like it was in a trash can or something...There are people who have been hit with debris, people with bloody foreheads.”
A photographer with Fox affiliate WFXT reported seeing a number of victims with lost limbs.

Why do they only strike places that kiss their a$$? DC, New York, Boston?
When did you last see an attack like this in Dallas or Birmingham? I know about OKC and Atlanta, but those were done by local nutcases.
Look for more "security theater". Have any of you been to South Station lately?

From the videos I've seen, the explosion (or one of them) took place behind or under the stands, right next to the finish line.
Hard to believe that a vehicle with a bomb could get in there without being stopped and inspected.
Only other thing, it seems to me, is a person with a suicide bomb belt under his clothes.
If so, there won't be much left to put on trial. But could he have operated alone? Where did he get the explosives? Who, if anyone, helped him?

I'm hearing they've found 2 more devices. I'll wait to see if they don't find who did this or claims credit for it. May be Islamicists, may be someone angry at being inconvenienced by Marathon. Might be someone who couldn't qualify. Might just be a lone nutter. I'm pretty certain though they have recordings of who has been where for several days, if not weeks.

That's unlikely. It's Patriot's Day in Massachusetts and most government and many private offices are closed.

so far there have been three explosions (two at the finish line and one at the JFK Library) and a 4th device found and disarmed. Hard to place blame on any individual or organization at this time. Cell phone service is shut down (some explosives can be set off by cell phones). There may be other explosives spread throughout the area which could suggest that there is more than one individual perpetrator. Boston is pretty much shut down (some bridges closed, airport shut down, etc.)
We are going to have to wait for more info.

Republicans and "anti gov" groups are to blame
Shameful: New York Times Columnist Nicholas Kristof Links Boston Explosion to GOP, Others Pile On
Never let a tragedy go to waste. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof on Monday quickly used the explosions in Boston for political gain, linking the Republican Party to the horrific act. At 4:10pm, Kristof tweeted (https://twitter.com/NickKristof/status/323891060927512576), "explosion is a reminder that ATF needs a director. Shame on Senate Republicans for blocking apptment." [UPDATE: Kristof has "taken back" the comment and deleted the tweet. See below for screen shot of the tweet.]
Kristof then tweeted a link to a Washington Post (http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-02-01/world/36682602_1_atf-operation-andrew-traver-fast-and-furious) story about Senator Charles Grassley questioning the fitness of Obama's Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms nominee. Kristof's comments earned a rebuke from the liberal Politico (http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/04/the-boston-explosions-politicized-161700.html#.UWxjWrThKqc.twitter). Dylan Byers reported, "Kristof's tweet earned a number of responses expressing either anger or bafflement." [SECOND UPDATE: More journalists are politicizing the tragedy. See below.]
http://newsbusters.org/sites/default/files/2012/Kristof2.bmpAt 4:37, Kristof tried to walk back his comment (https://twitter.com/NickKristof/status/323897846904524803): "People jumping on me for criticizing Sen Repubs for blocking ATF appointments. ok, that was low blow. i take it back." He deleted his original tweet.

CNN Analyst Suggests 'Right-Wing Extremists' Could Be Behind Boston Bombing
Appearing on CNN's live coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing with host Jake Tapper, Bergen was asked to explain if the bombing could have been an act of terror. Bergen answered in the affirmative, and proceeded to name possible suspects depending on the type of explosive used. [Transcript below. Audio here (http://newsbusters.org/sites/default/files/2012/2013-04-15-CNN-Bergen-Terror.mp3). Video below the break.]
Who were Bergen's suspects? Al Qaeda and "right-wing extremists."

Al Sharpton's Radio Producer Tweets Speculation That 'Anti-Gov' Group Behind Boston Marathon Bombings
At 3:38 p.m. Eastern, Huffington Post blogger (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nida-khan/)and Al Sharpton radio producer Nida Khan speculated on Twitter (https://twitter.com/NidaKhanNY/status/323883100557950976) that an anti-government group may be responsible for the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon.
"We don't know anything yet of course, but it is tax day & my first thought was all these anti-gov groups, but who knows," tweeted Khan, who immediately received a lot of blowback on Twitter for politicizing the tragedy. But rather than back down, Khan defended her speculation in subsequent tweets like these:
"So ...according to conservatives tweeting me, it's ok to highlight that it could have been a terrorist group, but not an anti-gov group, smh" (https://twitter.com/NidaKhanNY/status/323890924797165568)
"mainstream [media] does it all the time, and I was mentioning possibilities, also said could have been gas explosion" (https://twitter.com/NidaKhanNY/status/323896410858745856)
"But that's why I did it actually, wanted to prove a point about group blaming and clearly I was right" (https://twitter.com/NidaKhanNY/status/323897949438500866)
"No, I've got conservatives who never like to look in the mirror" (https://twitter.com/NidaKhanNY)

Two bombs exploded near the crowded finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing two people and injuring more than 50 others in a terrifying scene of broken glass, smoke and severed limbs, authorities said.
A third blast rocked the John F. Kennedy Library a few miles away and more than an hour later, but no injuries were reported, the police commissioner said. A senior U.S. intelligence official said two other explosive devices were found near the marathon finish line.
I would like to point out, while still trying to remain sensitive to the awful information, that no guns were used.

I agree. Our thoughts should indeed be with the injured, and the dead. The relatives of loved ones. As it inevitably SHOULD be when atrocities are committed.
But it goes further than that. Doesn't it ? Tell me, Noir, whether the American people have the right to strike back at aggressors. To track and to act against anyone linked to it. To deter to the maximum possible extent any likelihood of more attacks. To DO what it TAKES to make them PAY.
I take it, Noir, that you fully agree ?

My Lord, did the sick and dying interrupt the POTUS at golf today. His speech was so monotone and unfeeling and of course he could barely raise his head away from his teleprompter. Because then he might have had to show some emotion. No doubt he was po'd he got upstaged. It's not nice to take attention away from the God of the US. I've seen him more passionate over a beer with a cop than this tripe he spouted today. As for Boston :( terrible, tragic and senseless. Who knows if it's a home grown cell or Muslims who crossed the wide open borders from Mexico. It wouldn't surprise me if the truth isn't in Opukeo's favor we will have another Bengazi on our hands. Obviously we know who these terrible people are (just ask a Lib), they will tell you it's a republican sequester fan. Don't believe me just ask Harry or the Great Divider and Thief. :dunno: This whole event today could have been avoided had we raised taxes on the rich. That said, my sincere condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and my wishes those wounded heal quickly. God please grant them peace.

... I fail to see the biased part.
He clearly implies "tax day" may be the reason for the bombing. But Chris was not done there. He went on with his "insight" as to who was behind the bombing
Just hours after explosions rocked the Boston Marathon on Monday, Chris Matthews speculated, "Normally domestic terrorists, people, tend to be on the far right." He then reconsidered and suggested, "...That’s not a good category, just extremists, let’s call them that." [See video below. MP3 audio here (http://newsbusters.org/sites/default/files/2012/2013-04-15-MSNBC-HARDBALL-MATTHEWS.mp3).]
During live coverage, the Hardball host highlighted a possible explosion at John F. Kennedy's presidential library and thought this could be a personal attack on the Democratic Party: "...But going after the Kennedy Library, not something at Bunker Hill, not something from the Freedom Trail or anything that kind of historic, but a modern political figure of the Democratic Party. Does that tell you something?" (Police are now considering the incident at the JFK library to be fire-related.) One can only guess what it tells Chris.
<iframe width="520" height="293" title="MRC TV video player" src="http://www.mrctv.org/embed/120852" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>
Has Matthews not heard of left-wing domestic terrorists such as William Ayers or the Weather Underground?

So far no suspects
Hunt for suspects, motives in Boston bombing is 'wide open,' authorities say
The FBI and state and local police are intensifying their probe into Monday's bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, vowing a "worldwide investigation" and appealing to the public for tips and cell phone pictures that might yield clues about who was behind the horrific attack.
"At this time there are no claims of responsibility," FBI officials said in a press conference Tuesday. "The range of suspects and motives remains wide open."
Three died and at least 176 were injured when two bombs went off just before 3 p.m., shattering a festive atmosphere several hours after the legendary race began on the city's 238th annual Patriots' Day.
Officials found that the bombs consisted of explosives put in ordinary 1.6-gallon pressure cookers, one with shards of metal and ball bearings, the other with nails, a person close to the investigation tells the Associated Press. The bombs were stuffed into black duffel bags and left on the ground, the person said.
Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge in Boston, confirmed at a press conference investigators had found pieces of black nylon from a bag or backpack and fragments of BBs and nails, possibly contained in a pressure cooker. He said the items were sent to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, Va., for analysis.
The FBI also plans to reconstruct the devices at their headquarters in Quantico, according to MyFoxBoston.com.

Authorities had searched an apartment in the nearby Boston suburb of Revere as part of the investigation into the explosions. But the individual in question, who was initially considered a "person of interest," has now been ruled out as a suspect, sources confirmed to Fox News.
The FBI has a lot of leads and "a lot of work to do" in the investigation, a law enforcement source said. The source said the investigation is "very fluid" and the FBI is looking at many, many people.

I should have posted it here first instead of the other thread. Anyway, it appears they have identified and/or arrested someone already. There will apparently be a 5pm press conference to tell us more.
Authorities believe they have identified a suspect from video footage in the Boston Marathon bombings, Reuters reported Wednesday. An arrest is imminent, according to the AP.
The FBI is holding a press conference at 5 p.m. and is expected to announce the news then. CNN reported that the breakthrough in the investigation came from analyzing department store surveillance video and video from a news station.
The Boston Globe reported that officials have found an image of "a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene."

Like others, I wish it could have been stopped, but I think we would all be a tad naive if we thought we could stop every single threat. Now it's time to convict and fry those involved.

At the very least, it appears the courthouse was in fact cleared, but not much more info than that...
BOSTON (Reuters) - Security officials on Wednesday ordered staff, media and attorneys to evacuate Boston's federal courthouse, according to a Reuters reporter on the scene.
Scores of people could be seen leaving the building. No further details were immediately available.
"Get away from the building. I can't stress this enough, people," a uniformed law enforcement official yelled at the crowd.

Just a thought; I don't think it likely this case can be closed with *A* arrest. Originally that seemed possible because of the somewhat primitive nature of the explosives, creating a possibility of a "lone wolf" actor.
However, the corresponding ricin attacks make a multi-actor conspiracy more likely, IMO.
It is possible a lone wolf could have also done the ricin attacks as well.... dropped them into the mail a day or so before the marathon.
Possible, but not likely IMO.
We'll see.

(CNN) -- The FBI on Thursday released photos and video of two men it called suspects in the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon and pleaded for public help in identifying them.
The two men were photographed walking together near the finish line of the marathon before the explosions that killed three people and wounded about 180. One of the two men was seen setting down a backpack at the site of the second explosion, said Special Agent Rick DesLauriers, the head of the FBI's Boston office.
DesLauriers said the men should be considered armed and "extremely dangerous."
The announcement capped a day in which President Barack Obama brought a mixture of reassurance and defiance to an interfaith memorial service in the city's Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Whoever planted the bombs "picked the wrong city" to attack, he said.
"Every one of us stands with you," Obama told the crowd. "Boston may be your hometown -- but we claim it, too. ... For millions of us, what happened on Monday is personal."
Addressing the still-unknown perpetrators, Obama added, "Yes, we will find you. And yes, you will face justice. We will hold you accountable." And he looked ahead to next year's race, predicting that "the world will return to this great American city to run even harder and to cheer even louder for the 118th Boston Marathon. Bet on it."

Sorry, but that 'seems to be missing' image is way too small and fuzzy to be able to tell definitively if black backpack straps on a black shirt are there or not.

Remarks of Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers at Press Conference on Bombing Investigation FBI Boston April 18, 2013
Good afternoon. My name is Richard DesLauriers. I am the special agent in charge of the Boston Division of the FBI.
Since Monday’s bombings, the FBI and our law enforcement partners have been working around the clock and are fully committed to investigating this matter to bring those responsible for justice.
Our collective law enforcement team has pursued thousands leads and tips. As I said two days ago, we are working methodically and with a sense of urgency to identify those responsible for the bombings. Within the last day or so, through that careful process, we initially developed a single person of interest. Not knowing if the individual was acting alone or in concert with others, we obviously worked with extreme purpose to make that determination. The entire force of the federal government, the FBI in Boston and around the world, as well as our partners in the Boston Police, ATF, Massachusetts State Police, and the more than 30 agencies of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, have set about to ensure that all responsible for the bombings will be brought to justice.
More importantly, it was done to ensure the future safety of the city, the commonwealth and the country. Indeed, through that process, the FBI developed a second suspect.
Today, we are enlisting the public’s help to identify the two suspects.
After a very detailed analysis of photo, video, and other evidence, we are releasing photos of the two suspects. They are identified as Suspect 1 and Suspect 2. They appear to be associated.
Suspect 1 is wearing a black hat.
Suspect 2 is wearing a white hat.
Suspect 2 set down a back pack at the site of the second explosion just in front of the Forum Restaurant.
We strongly encourage those who were at the Forum Restaurant who have not contacted us yet to do so.
As you can see from one of the images, Suspects 1 and 2 appear to be walking together through the marathon crowd on Boylston Street in the direction of the finish line. That image was captured as they walked on Boylston in the vicinity of its intersection with Gloucester Street.

WASHINGTON, April 17 | Wed Apr 17, 2013 6:27pm EDT
WASHINGTON, April 17 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal at the White House on Wednesday and discussed the conflict in Syria (http://www.reuters.com/places/syria), a spokeswoman said.
The meeting was not on Obama's public schedule.
http://cdn.teads.tv/img/ir/mention_en.png
The spokeswoman, Caitlin Hayden, said the president joined a meeting between the Saudi official and Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon.
"The president and Prince Saud al-Faisal reaffirmed the strong partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia (http://www.reuters.com/places/saudi-arabia) and discussed developments in the region, including the conflict in Syria," Hayden said in a statement.
The guy in hospital is know Saudi. The two on the videos and pics appear Saudi, but really could be Swiss guys that just are genetic anomalies or something? Perhaps they are really 80 year olds, just appearing to be in 20's?

Yeah, one dead, they're closing in on the second.
A nice bit of police work here. Nice cooperation between the public and private sectors with the public and private security cameras.
This sets the cause of liberals and pothead conservatives back at least 10 years, those individuals whose immediate response to the bombing was "WTF good is our security forces?" Those dumbasses who bloviate "If a drone flies over my house, I'll shoot it down!"
Virtually impossible to secure every inch of a 26.2 mile marathon route, but try something and we'll get ya muthafucka. That's WTF they're good for.

BREAKING NEWS: One of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing is dead after the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and a shootout with police, and a massive manhunt is underway for the other, authorities said early Friday.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said on Twitter that one of the two suspects was killed and that the at-large suspect, labeled by the FBI as "suspect two" in the marathon bombing, was "armed and dangerous."
Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down.
"We believe this to be a terrorist," Davis said in a press conference. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody."
The Middlesex district attorney said the two men are suspected of killing the MIT police officer on campus late Thursday, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed. Hours earlier, police had released photos of the marathon bombing suspects and asked for the public's help finding them.
The suspects threw explosives from the car as police followed it into Watertown, according to the district attorney's news release. The suspects and police exchanged gunfire, and one of the suspects was critically injured and later died while the other escaped.
During the pursuit, a MBTA transit police officer was seriously injured and transported to the hospital, the news release states. Details on the officer's condition were not immediately available Friday morning.
Hours earlier, police had released photos of the marathon bombing suspects and asked for the public's help finding them. A new photo of the suspect on the loose was released later showing him in a grey hoodie sweatshirt. It was taken at a 7-Eleven in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston.
A federal law enforcement official told Fox News they are looking into whether the bombing suspects may have been from overseas and had overseas military training.

The Surviving Boston bomb suspect is identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev
WASHINGTON (AP)- The Surviving Boston bomb suspect is identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev age 19 and officials are saying both suspects are brothers of Cambridge, Mass.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Boston bomb suspects are said to be from a region in Russia near Chechnya and have lived in U.S. for at least a year.
WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) -- Police are locking down some neighborhoods in Boston and its western suburbs as they search for the remaining suspect in the marathon bombings.
Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down.
The announcement this morning comes hours after the killing one suspect, known as the man in the black hat from marathon surveillance footage. The man in the white hat is on the loose and police are calling him a "terrorist" who came here "to kill."
BOSTON (NBC News)-Boston bombing suspects have international ties and have been in U.S. for as long as a year. And Officials say they may have military experience.
BOSTON (NBC News) - Two men identified by law enforcement sources as the Boston Marathon attack suspects — armed with explosives and guns — battled authorities in a Boston suburb early Friday morning, unleashing chaos until cops took one of the men into custody, and the other fled, the sources said.
Officials later said the the suspect taken into custody died.
The standoff in Watertown, Mass., erupted shortly after the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer. A transit police officer was also wounded in the Watertown fire fight, officials confirmed to NBC affiliate WHDH.
Referencing the photographs that were released by the FBI Thursday, authorities said the "white-hat" suspect was still on the loose. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Officials in Watertown were warning residents to "stay in their homes and not open their doors unless a police officer is there."
"There is a terrorist on the loose," said one officer at an impromptu press conference at about 4:30 a.m. ET.
