Another reason why I choose to homeschool/free learning............
The father of a Connecticut child is furious after discovering that his son’s school is teaching students that Americans don’t have a Second Amendment right to bear arms.
“I am appalled,” said Steven Boibeaux, of Bristol. “It sounds to me like they are trying to indoctrinate our kids.”
Boibeaux’s son is an eighth grader at Northeast Middle School.
On Monday his social studies teacher gave students a worksheet titled, ‘The Second Amendment Today.’ “The courts have consistently determined that the Second Amendment does not ensure each individual the right to bear arms,” the worksheet states. “The courts have never found a law regulating the private ownership of weapons unconstitutional.
The worksheet, published by Instructional Fair, goes on to say that the Second Amendment is not incorporated against the states.
“This means that the rights of this amendment are not extended to the individual citizens of the states,” the worksheet reads. “So a person has no right to complain about a Second Amendment violation by state laws.”

SO.... MUCH.... STUPID!
Do I even need to bring up the point that the Amendment literally says "The right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"? Or that the DC handgun ban was declared a violation of the 2nd Amendment?
This is such monumentally incorrect information, I just don't get how the teacher thought it wouldn't get bullshit called on it.

Gotta disagree with you totally on this one Kathianne. It's NOT time for an apology. It's more like a time for a DISMISSAL, or Outright FIRING. No amount of apology, or promises would work since the Children in question have already been Indoctrinated with FALSE FACTS.

Cut him slack if he is young and dumb . If he was not deliberately lying to indoctrinate the kids. Teach him the error of his ways and make him understand that another incident will end in his termination. I could go with that ..and I'm a hardliner.. -Tyr

Tyr. That's the biggest problem all of us have these days. Always feeling we need to cut them slack, while they take over, and pretend it was all an accident...as they promise Not to do it again. Meanwhile. The damage has been done if the children were the targets.

Kat my older boy came home a couple years ago arguing with me that WW2 caused the great depression , he told me his teacher told them that, I argued with him that he must of misunderstood and the next day when he came home he told me NO dad you're wrong , I had to show him dates
Just this week my youngest came home telling me that Vietnamese people live in tunnels underground and during the war we would go into them grab the first one and put a gun to his head and make him call his buddies in their language (telling them it is ok to come out ) and when they came out we would shoot them, yup another trip to the school is coming,( these liberal teachers make me sick) Trinity I am truly starting to believe the only way a child can get a good education anymore is home schooling

I have to ask, "How old are these teachers?" Some of what 'kids' are learning in university is pretty wrong and one must believe it's intentional, IMO. Then they are sent out to spread the poison.

Kat the HS teacher happened a couple of years ago and honestly I had never met her as for the situation now I will let you know this afternoon , the boys graduate this year to middle school and I am sure the vice principal is thrilled to see me go  But I am not one to sit by as my children are either mistreated or taught wrong , over all though the grammar school did a great job both boys have either been on the honor roll or the principals lists since they have started school and this last marking period they both are on the principals list so if they finish the year off that way I have promised them a surprise ( I better start saving , 10 and 11 years old and they want Iphones ) actually the phones they want they are allowed to use at school, they only work when in a wifi area but the kids down load all there games and stuff and now a days you can find wifi anywhere so they can text their friends all they want, but really they want to be able to get on FB, imagine them being able to talk to uncle Jim everyday

OOO yea we have them , don't get me wrong we have good teachers as well and I am sure some of the good ones might even have liberal beliefs ( seems like the colleges turn many that way ) but the ones that would teach the things I spoke of or tell my boys what a great Job Obama is doing, heck we even had one explaining to my 11 year old son a couple years ago how Obama was a great president the reason the country is in bad shape was Gw's fault , that kind of thing should not be taught to the kids , at best it is opinion, but those are the ones that make me sick

This is why Jafar should hold his anti-American comments.
JAFAR, in this country if you are convicted of ANY FELONY you lose your right to own Firearms.
before you try and be snarky and such, maybe you should know our laws first.

There are arguments on both sides as to whether or not the 2nd Amendment applies to the individual.
A good teacher would have discussed these arguments and asked the students to write an essay on their views with supporting arguments.
Unfortunately, this teacher is not in the business of educating, rather indoctrinating.

Though this country has 50 states with national guards, the final statement bans the Feds from infringing on our rights to keep and bear arms.

EVERYONE who is out of prison, should be able to buy a gun if he wants to.
Which is why we need to change our sentencing rules, so that anyone we think should not have a gun, NEVER gets out of prison before it's OK for him to buy a gun.

I agree with you. I'm firmly on the side of the 2nd Amendment applying to the individual. However, I acknowledge the arguments against this interpretation and I think a good teacher has a duty to present both sides to their students and make them think about what the 2nd Amendment means to them rather than presenting an opinion as fact.

If she teaches them that the Feds can keep them disarmed (argument of the other side) she is flat out lying.
People also ignore that the first 10 amendments were rights the people have.
This is important since rights are just that, rights. If the Feds can infringe on the 2nd or the others, they are not rights.

If she teaches them that the Feds can keep them disarmed (argument of the other side) she is flat out lying.
I agree. But that is not the core argument of the other side. The other side's argument is centered around the wording of "a well regulated Militia" to justify the interpretation that the 2nd does not apply to the individual as well as the Supreme Court case US v. Miller which is used to back up that assertion. On the other hand we have the Supreme Court case of the District of Columbia v. Heller where the court stated very specifically that the 2nd does, in fact, apply to the individual.
In terms of educating children, I think the best course is to ask students to analyze both positions as well as the intent of the founders and decide where they stand on the issue and be prepared to back up their positions with solid arguments. I would even take a day or two encourage a healthy student debate to get them to feel passionate about their positions. The sad part of this story is that the superintendent pulled the assignment entirely which does nothing at all to educate children on the 2nd Amendment.

There we go, what some people don't realize when it comes to people who just got out of jail is, they served their time.
Like when applying for a job. People who've just gotten out can't find any cause they're a convicted felon. Why not? They just spent 15 years of their life paying for what they did. Their punishment is up.

If the guy you just let out of jail, is still too dangerous to own a gun, then why did you let him out of jail?
Sounds to me like you're admitting you blew it when you gave him a sentence that expires today, instead of a sentince that expires in two more years or whatever time you consider him "no longer dangerous".

I was just replying to RSR's graphic which seems to suggest that the 2nd amendment is the only gun license needed.
Of course convicted criminals of the calibre of that nutcase should be banned for life. As should anyone who accidentally shoots someone, accidentally discharges a firearm even if it didn't hit someone or otherwise misuses a weapon.
Gun ownership should be a privilege with conditions, not a right. Guns are very dangerous in the wrong hands.

What grade is this? I can see some relevance to the slaughterhouse cases (still standing law btw) which ruled that the fourteenth amendment's privileges and immunities didn't extend to limit the states' police powers; the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment's Privileges or Immunities clause affected only rights of United States citizenship and not state citizenship. The McDonald v chicago ruling circumvented overturning that decision, but it did rule that an individual had right to bear arms for personal protection, thereby ruling a municipal firearm law unconstitutional. So I'd say that gives the paperwork a false rating on politifact.

Tyr, I don't think you understand the argument I am making. I am not arguing about the 2nd Amendment per se. I am making a point regarding how this subject should be approached in the classroom. Please read my other posts in this same thread. You can see that the Supreme Court has had to address this on several occasions and has evolved in it's opinion because of that pesky "regulated Militia" wording. Thus, the subject has been debated and as such I believe this is a great opportunity to have students analyze the arguments that have been made over time and determine where they stand on the issue and debate their points among each other in the classroom. That's good for learning, not having a preconceived opinion presented to them as fact.
Ultimately you can see that I personally agree with you. The 2nd Amendment is a right of the individual.
