An Alabama high school teacher has been suspended 10 days without pay for a rant in which he called the first lady "fat butt Michelle Obama."

Alabama high school psychology teacher Bob Grisham has been suspended for 10 days without pay for a rant that included calling the first lady “fat butt Michelle Obama." A student in Grisham’s class made an audio recording of the remarks, which also included derogatory comments about gays.
Grisham's suspension from Lauderdale County High School begins on Tuesday, and he has been barred from teaching his class for the rest of the school year and ordered to attend sensitivity training. Also the school's head football coach, he will be assigned "other academic duties'' for the rest of the year in place of teaching his class, according to Lauderdale County Superintendent Jennifer Gray.

I HOPE THE MAN GETS A DAMN GOOD ATTORNEY AND SUES FOR MILLIONS BECAUSE HIS FREE SPEECH RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED IMHO....

An Alabama high school teacher has been suspended 10 days without pay for a rant in which he called the first lady "fat butt Michelle Obama."

Alabama high school psychology teacher Bob Grisham has been suspended for 10 days without pay for a rant that included calling the first lady “fat butt Michelle Obama." A student in Grisham’s class made an audio recording of the remarks, which also included derogatory comments about gays.
Grisham's suspension from Lauderdale County High School begins on Tuesday, and he has been barred from teaching his class for the rest of the school year and ordered to attend sensitivity training. Also the school's head football coach, he will be assigned "other academic duties'' for the rest of the year in place of teaching his class, according to Lauderdale County Superintendent Jennifer Gray.

If he wanted to say those things on his own time, not in a school session, that is his right. However, there is no right to free speech in the workplace, unless you work for the government. You need to re-read the 1st amendment.

The First Amendment does not apply to employees in the private sector. Employees do not even have the right to discuss non-work related issues at all. Most employers allow it, but it's important to realize that it is a privilege that the employer can revoke at any time. After all, the purpose of the workers is to work.

Not necessarily if saying such in class, without context. Pretty difficult to figure how such comments are relevant to psych or couching. Really, for the life of me, can't come up with a relevant segue even in social studies, perhaps with her attempts to mandate school lunches, but the comment on her butt? Nah, can't find the reasoning.

First, a public school teacher works for the government. I don't think that gives them the right to say whatever they want in the classroom. They are paid to teach certain subjects. Not go on their own political tirades.

Second, I think it's difficult to access whether this was an appropriate comment or not without context, though I agree with Kathianne, I dont really see any way it would be appropriate in classroom, but it might be possible. That's why context is important.

Teachers need to be teaching what they are paid to teach. Not ranting to kids on personal politics, regardless of whether they are correct or incorrect in those political views.

I was not aware that free speech , political discussions , speaking about public figures were so restricted at school.
Had the guy praised the obama's would anything have seen said or done? If the answer is no (and it is) then its really all about the fact that he criticized instead of praised. And that points to the injustice and censorship of which I took righteous umbrage to myself.-Tyr

I never said she did anything for those types of comments. As for discussion in school, she's brought up the cafe menus time and again. The kids don't agree, especially high school, where they are left hungry. None of this has to do with her butt. Or psych. Or couching.

and were you "outraged" when teachers during the Bush years "taught" their students that Pres Bush was a new Hitler? Or forced their students to chant for John Kerry?

The liberal media circled the wagons around these teachers, and tried to defend them.

First, a public school teacher works for the government. I don't think that gives them the right to say whatever they want in the classroom. They are paid to teach certain subjects. Not go on their own political tirades.

Second, I think it's difficult to access whether this was an appropriate comment or not without context, though I agree with Kathianne, I dont really see any way it would be appropriate in classroom, but it might be possible. That's why context is important.

Teachers need to be teaching what they are paid to teach. Not ranting to kids on personal politics, regardless of whether they are correct or incorrect in those political views.

As most teachers are liberals, it is NOT appropriate to say anything disrespectful about the Obama's. Hell you may even question Pres Obama' actions or motives, if you are a student in this "teacher's" classroom

Assumption. How do you know a conservative kid wouldn't have complained in that case?

Point is, 1st amendment doesn't apply in the workplace. If it did, you could tell your boss he's a smeghead, and he couldn't fire you because you could claim freedom of speech.

I don't want a teacher talking politics, or sexual orientation, in my child's class... and I don't give a rats ass if the teacher is liberal, conservative (like me), or independent.

I think there's a place for discussion of political issues in school, in social studies. Even then, I think it reasonable for the teacher to take a middle of the road stance, regardless of their personal feelings. I was in a classroom the day before yesterday, I've not seen so one-sided classroom decor before. I'm surprised the department chair hasn't called for change or that parents/students haven't complained.

If we expect students to be civil, I think parents and teachers should set reasonable examples of civility at minimum. Calling someone a 'fat butt' isn't civil.

When they start going after the liberal indoctrination and political praise of obama so prevalent in the schools I'll agree this guy should have been censored, until then I will not. This doesn't sound like a political opinion to me. The teacher took a shot at Michelle's butt, not her politics. I could see a discussion on politics in a political science class, but this is not the issue. Derogatory comments about gays don't sound applicable either. I can't imagine a context in which either subject could have been appropriately broached.

As often happens, I think you're missing the point. If the teacher was praising Michelle Obama's butt or praising the gay life style, that would be inappropriate also. It's not just the opinion that's inappropriate, it's the subject matter.

An Alabama high school teacher has been suspended 10 days without pay for a rant in which he called the first lady "fat butt Michelle Obama."

Alabama high school psychology teacher Bob Grisham has been suspended for 10 days without pay for a rant that included calling the first lady “fat butt Michelle Obama." A student in Grisham’s class made an audio recording of the remarks, which also included derogatory comments about gays.
Grisham's suspension from Lauderdale County High School begins on Tuesday, and he has been barred from teaching his class for the rest of the school year and ordered to attend sensitivity training. Also the school's head football coach, he will be assigned "other academic duties'' for the rest of the year in place of teaching his class, according to Lauderdale County Superintendent Jennifer Gray.

I HOPE THE MAN GETS A DAMN GOOD ATTORNEY AND SUES FOR MILLIONS BECAUSE HIS FREE SPEECH RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED IMHO....

It is amazing how libs are "outraged" over the conduct of this teacher for making a comment about Ms Obama's rear end - but were silent over these examples of liberal teachers gone wild

Libs love to chant "academic freedom" in these cases but these are examples of teaching opinions as facts in the classrooms. Our public schools have indeed become liberal indoctrination centers

Bennish told students Jan. 29 he found "eerie similarities" to Bush's statements in his State of the Union speech and things Adolf Hitler said, i.e., "We're the only ones who are right. Everyone else is backwards. And it's our job to conquer the world and make sure they live just like we want them to."

As WorldNetDaily reported in November (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47601), talk host Sean Hannity urged college students to fight back against left-wing indoctrination in class by recording professors' lectures. "All you college kids out there, check your state laws, check your campus laws," said Hannity on his national radio program. "Get your little tape recorders if legal, and I want you to start recording these left-wingers. Bring it to this program and we'll start airing it every single time on this program. I'm sick of this indoctrination. I'm sick of this left-wing propaganda."

Hannity's call to action came in the wake of the case of Rebecca Beach, a 19-year-old freshman at Warren County Community College in Washington, N.J., who, as WorldNetDaily first reported (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47461), was rebuked sharply by an English professor for her announcement of a campus program featuring a decorated Iraq war hero.

Wasn't there a school/class that had kids singing crap about Obama?

I don't think they should have anything other than general politics in our schools. My son's 2 schools in the past 3 years are gaga over Obama and have the kids draw pictures and other crap bragging about how great he is.
I'm lucky that my kid's school is moderate in terms of their politics. My 8 year old son learned about the Presidents last year.
The school focused on the basics: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the current President, which just happened to be Obama. He didn't come home singing Obama's praise but really liked Abraham Lincoln :). He was very curious about what I knew about the Civil War. Additionally, he learned we would be voting for a new President and became really excited over the election and asked me all kinds of questions on how it all worked and who I was going to vote for.

That's exactly the end result I expect from his education at this level. Teach him the basics without trying to influence his world view. Let him ask questions and make up his own mind.....at least until I get my hands on him :laugh:

I can only remember as far back as like 1980, but the same from there till I graduated, it was all American History and the fathers of our nation. I'm sure there was a mention growing up about Carter and then Reagan, but it certainly wasn't a part of our curriculum as some of this crap today.
