Former Mayor Ed Koch died early this morning, sources told The Post. He was 88.


Koch had been in and out of the hospital in recent months, and was admitted Monday at New York Presbyterian Medical Center.
He was moved to intensive care yesterday as his condition worsened.


Koch – who served as mayor from 1978 to 1989 – died at about 2 a.m. today, sources said.

I didn't even notice this until you just quoted it. Not sure why I didn't mention it earlier. Of course I've been inundated with his life story today too. I was very young when Koch took the mayors office. I think about 10 or so, up till I was in HS. I always liked him, the way he carried himself. He was funny too. I thought he was a decent New Yorker. I liked reading his columns more than anything, in the past 10 years. Very bright man.

Ironically, as looney liberal as NYC is.... it does serve as an example that insane liberalism can be bounced back from. Even with a largely liberal electorate.

Koch was ditched for the woefully inept David Dinkins. After 4 years of unrestrained liberal idiocy, Rudy Giuliani stormed in to fight crime, slash the welfare rolls, take on the municipal unions, cut government waste, and totally transform the city for the better.

Koch originally liked Rudy very much. But when Rudy showed what a *REAL* mayor could accomplished, Koch viciously turned on him.

Koch was a genuine New Yorker.

Lindsay, Dinkins, Giuliani, and (Lord help us) Bloomberg were politicians. It just seemed like they came from somewhere else to lead us.

But Koch was one of us.
