Syria has complained to the UN of an alleged Israeli airstrike targeting a research facility. Iran, Syria's closest ally, has joined in issuing a threat of retaliation against Israel for the supposed attack. (Baz Ratner/Reuters)

Syria is threatening to retaliate for an Israeli airstrike and its ally Iran says there will be repercussions for the Jewish state over the attack.
On Thursday Syria sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressing the country's "right to defend itself, its territory and sovereignty" and holding Israel and its supporters accountable.

"Israel and those who protect it at the Security Council are fully responsible for the repercussions of this aggression," the letter from Syria's Foreign Ministry said.
U.S. officials said Israel launched a rare airstrike inside Syria on Wednesday. The target was a convoy believed to be carrying anti-aircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese militant group allied with Syria and Iran.
In Israel, a legislator close to hardline Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stopped short of confirming involvement in the strike. But he hinted that Israel could carry out similar missions in the future.

The simple fact of the matter is those countries hate Israel and make threats all the time. other than some Hail Mary rocket attacks, that's pretty much all they do. Israel smacks them around like child's play. It must suck being on the losing end, every time; year after year. Especially by Jewish people who have arguably been the most victimized people throughout history(with the exception of women) Its like theyre the new low man on the totem pole. As if that's not bad enough, Imagine how crappy it must be to know the only way your beliefs function in society is when your way is the only way and all others are oppressed to the point that civil war and infighting undermine any hope of long-term structural investment, leaving you in squalor with no hope save grandiose dreams of 72 pies in the sky. Almost have to pity those poor bastards.

Let them try..... Once the Israelis destroy the Syrian Air force they are that much closer to bombing the Iranian reactor sites....

Iran would fall quickly

If Syria wanted to retaliate, they would be more than justified. Israel's unprovoked attack is a violation of international law.

However, Assad is already on the back foot and is too busy trying not to get hanged by his own people at the moment. He has also lost all support among the Arabs so nobody will back him up.

I'm a middle man between your views and Tire's.

Israel certainly does have a history of disregard for the sovereignty of other nations and of International Law. Israel is also certainly a racist, belligerent, and militant state. Both of those statements are true.

With that said, you can't deny that history is clear regarding centuries of racism, belligerence, and militant nature against the Jewish people. Until the 70's, the entire Arab nation's 1st priority has been to wash the Israeli population off of the continent and into the sea. Being a small island on an ocean of Arabs, Israel has had to resort to terrorist tactics and militant behaviors to defend themselves. Today's Iran is still a threat to Israel's national security.

Like I've written in past posts, I support the Palestinian position of at least being treated as equal citizens of Israel. I think a long history of Likud party settlement building has pretty much killed the two state solution, though.

While the Likud party has been hostile in this situation, I don't think the Palestinians are doing themselves any favors, though. There is no way in hell a solution to Israel will be found as long as the Palestinians ally themselves with a racist, belligerent, and militant Hamas.

Says the guy who denies that Israel, a sovereign, has NO right to exist. Hypocritical much? Just a little tip, never expect more respect than you give. Once a hard line is taken, eg Israel shouldn't exist, you give up any expectation of reciprocal respect of soveriegnty. Its like walking up to you and punching you in the face and then claiming you cant hit me, cause ive rights.
You certainly have the authority to strike back, but do you have the power? If you lack the power, of what good is authority? Same with the Israel issue. Regardless of the authority of Iran and Syria, they lack the power to defeat Israel. Israel knows this, that's why they fight tooth and nail against Iran's nuke program. If they develop a nuclear weapon, regardless of the authority to do so, they wouldn't hesitate to use it-- They've already stated that Israel should be destroyed-- repeatedly!!! Why on Earth would israel give such a nation free reign to bring about their own sovereign destruction? It defies the law of self-preservation.
So in summation, If you deny that authority, it becomes a question of power; legitimacy goes right out the window along with any ethical claims. Booking down to who kicks who's ass-- to the victor goes the spoils.

1] The deflection is YOURS, Jafar. You try to make a case based on, one must suppose, your sense of 'outrage' that international law should be seen to be violated. But, Jafar, Hamas are TERRORISTS you SUPPORT .. and you can't tell me that their actions against Israel get within a light year of OBEYING international law !!

So the only conclusion it seems possible to come to is that your case is built upon bias, is fueled by it.

I’m reading a book “The New Israelis” by Yossi Melman and learned some interesting tidbits I thought I’d post for the heck of it. Please excuse the exclusion of Palestinians in the following. I’ve focused on the country’s structure as per its declaration of independence.

Israel, without a constitution, has a declaration of independence for a national document. The declaration allows a “right of return” to all Jews. Unlike all “western” countries there is no separation of church and state.

“The Israeli declaration does state specifically that minorities in Israel will not be subject to discrimination and will enjoy full and equal rights: freedom of religious expression, education, and all the other liberties of civilized, modern democracies. Israel has no state religion, and Israeli law gives communities the right to maintain their traditions and apply their own laws of matrimony. So the Jews have rabbinical courts, the Muslims have shariya courts, and the Christians have the right to set their own religious laws for their respective communities. But the declaration states explicitly that Israel is the Jewish state.”

On the state ID a citizen’s religion is printed under “nationality”. This leads to amusing anomalies and identity confusion. In Islam, religion passes through the father; in Judaism, religion passes through the mother; therefore, one person can have two nationalities at once, or vice versa, none at all.

The boundaries of Israel are not defined and many believe that proves expansionist intentions of the founders. Ben Gurion of the Labor party in 1948 expected to pick up territory in the wars. Historically, the Likud party has maintained that the true boundaries of Israel are defined in the Bible and, if realized, would include the present day country of Jordan.
